Description
- UNITED STATES PATnTvTF OFFICE;o I
JOHN (l. RIETHMLLER, OF ALL'EGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l7i2,936,-dated February 1, 1876; application filed l November 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concer-n.-
Beit known that I, JOHN C. RIETHMLLER, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and usful Improvement in Cotton-Bale Tie; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specication, in Which- I Figure l is a View of the end of a bale-band and a tie embodying' my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the ends of the baleband and the tie.
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.l
My invention relates to that class of baleties in which the slotted ends of the bale-band are locked by a loose or detachable button 5 and it consists in combining With the button an open ring ordetachable washer or similar device, by means of which the button may be securely, though Inovabl y, attached to one end of the bale-band, with which it is to be employed.
Heretofore in slotted bale-bands where a loose button has been employed it has been liable to become detached and lost, or to iiy Y when the bale was suddenly loosened, to avoid which the button has been loosely riveted to the hoop, which rendered the fastening insecure, and liable to break or drag out, or firmly riveted, which rendered the tie nothing more than a hook, liable to become unlocked from the springof the bale in handling. In the last two cases the buttons became scrap in`" common with the band, when the latter was cnt in loosening the bale, and in the former case it was frequently lost.
The object of the present invention is to overcome these several objections to the use of the button, and to attach the button to the the cut employed. B is a button, havingvthe usual,
neck b and a cross-piece, b. A cross-piece is employed `in preference to a right-angular bend or projectiou, for the reason that a Washer is better retained by the cross-piece.y o is a split Washer, sufiiciently large to tit loosely on neck b of the button, and to prevent the escape of the cross-piece b. and the button and washer formed inthe usual manner. The cross-piece kof the button is passed through one of the slots ot' lthe band, the split washer placed around the neck ofthe button, and closed by a pair of pliers, completing the tie for shipment or use. y
When the band has been cut in loosening the bale, or from other causes'becomes useless asa bale-band, the locking device may be readily removed for use upon another band; or, it'
the locking-slot' should tear open, the button may be secured in a second slot, which cannot be done with the riveted button.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- I ent. is-
In combination with the slotted bale-band and detachable locking device, an open ring or detachable Washer, for retaining the locking device, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said JOHN C. RIETHMLLER, have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN c. RIETHMLLER.
