Description

H. WILSDORF Sept. 10, 1929.
WATCHCAS'E Filed Sept. 19 I. 1927 Patented 1Q, 1929.
UNH'E'ED STATES HANS VILSDORF, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
WATCHCASE.
Application filed September 19, 1927, Serial No.
This invention refers to a shaped watch case, that is to say a case the shape of which differs from the usual round or circular form.
The characteristic feature of the case according to the invention is that it comprises an outer casing or frame portion of the required shape. This frame portion is provided with a round opening. A back, a. rim or bezel for the glass, and a circular member adapted to fit within the frame and to enclose the movement are provided and the parts are assembled together by screwing the back and the rim or bezel on to the circular member, which not only holds the parts together but clamps the shaped frame in position.
.Vith the foregoing construction a shaped watch case is obtained which is practically water tight and dust proof, the essential con structional parts being held together by screwing.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example, one constructional embodiment of a watch case constructed according to the invention.
F 1 is a front elevation, and
2 is a cross section on the line IIII, Fig. 1.
The example shown is that of a watch case for a watch bracelet comprising an outer shaped frame portion 1 of octagonal form provided with attachment loops 3 and a tube for the passage of the winding stem and for the reception of the winding crown or button.
Fitting within the round opening 2 in the outer frame or casing is a circular element or box 5 having, at about its median plane, a projecting collar 6 which rests against an inner shoulder 7 in the outer frame or casing. The portions of the circular element 5 on each side of the collar 6 are screw threaded on the outside, and on to these threaded portions are screwed, on one side, the back 8, and on the other side the bezel or rim 9 carrying the glass 10.
When the back 8 and the bezel 9 are 220,539, and in Switzerland September 21, 1926.
screwed into position they press by means of inwardly turned knife edges 11 upon the surfaces of the outer frame or casing 1. and the essential constructional elements 1, 5, S and 9 making up the watch case are assembled by screwing.
This method of assembly of the parts of the case possesses the advantage of rendering the joints practically impervious to water nd to dust.
As regards the joint between the tube i and the winding stem and crown or button, this can be rendered impervious to dust and water by appropriate means, for instance by the means disclosed in the specification of British Patent No. 260,554.
The circular element 5 supports the watch movement 12 carrying the dial 13 (shown in dot and dash lines). The movement 12 may be attached in any ordinary manner in the circular element 5, for instance by means of the bezel 9 as indicated in the drawing. The circular element is pierced with a hole l e, to give passage to the winding stem. It carries a cover 15 which may spring into a circular notch.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is A shaped watch case of the type set forth comprising in combination an outer frame of the required shape provided with a round opening, a circular box member adapted to contain the movement and to it within the said round opening and provided with screw threads, and a back and bezel, adapted to screw one on each side on to the threads on the circular box member to clamp the outer frame between the said back and bezel. the said back and bezel having inwardly turned knife edges adapted to press upon the surface of the outer frame when the back and bezel are screwed into position.
In witness whereof I affix my signature.
HANS XVILSDORF.
