UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. ENO, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 72,724, dated January 25, 1876; application filed September 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. END, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and in the State of Iowa, have invent-t new and improved method of bracing chairs,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its'constructiol'i and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which--- Figure l is'a perspective view of a chair embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of parts thereof.
A represents the seat-frame of a chair, to which the rear legs B B are secured in any suitable manner-but preferably by having offsets a a formed in the sides of the frame, near the rear edge, for the frontof the legs to bear against, and then fastening them by screws b to the frame.
G G are the front legs constructed in any desired shape, and each leg provided at its upper end with a dovetailed tenou, d, made tapering, as shown in Fig. 3. This tenon is inserted from the rear into a correspondinglyshaped groove, e, made in the under side of the seat-frame.
The front legs G G are braced together and to their corresponding rear legs by means. of divided cross-braces D D, the inner ends of which are connected by metallic clamps E E, having grooves, in which the braces lie, the two parts of each clamp being fastened together by a single central'scre'w or bolt, It.
By these means the chair is braced on all sides, so that it cannot come loose and fallto pieces. It binds and braces itself in every direction, and can be put up and knocked down for shipment with ease.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the legs of a chair, of the divided cross-braces D and clamps E, substantially as and. for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that [claim the foregoing, l have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of August, 1875.
. JOSEPH A. ENO. Witnesses:
ROBERT GEORGE, SIMON O. BOWMAN.
