WINDOW CONSTRUCTION Filed Nov. 16, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 M 2 KW Patented Sept. 3, 1929. 2
UNITED STATES WILLIAM J. BEHLMER, OF BATESVILLE, INDIANA.
WINDO'W CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed November 16, 1927. Serial No. 233,593.
The invention relates broadly to window constructions, and particularly to-a new and improved window construction having an upper sash slidably mounted therein, and a lower sash slidably and pivotally mounted therein, so as to permit proper cleaning of the glass in the'sashes from the inside of the building in which the window is located.
An object of the invention is to provide guides in the window frames for the lower sashes provided with tongues vertically adjustable in grooves in the sides of the window frame, provided with means for pivotally mounting the lower sashes thereto and provided with means for yi'eldingly retaining said guides in position.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel meanson the guides for attaching a counterweight cord thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide means on the guide for detachably holding a yielding element adapted for engagement between the guide and the slideway formed. between the stops of the window frame for yieldingly holding the guide and its attached sash in adjusted position.
Vith the foregoing and such other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment herein described may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmental front elevation of a window embodying the features of my invention, and shown with the sashes in closed assembled position.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmental cross sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.'
Figure 4 is a fragmental sectional view taken on line 4- 1 of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Figure 6 is a fragmental perspective view of one of the slide members for the pivotal sashes with the weight cord attached thereto by means of a demountable clip.
Figure 7 is a. view similar to Fig. 6 but omitting the weight connecting means, and
disclosing means for retaining the yielding element for holding the slide member in any adjusted position.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of one of the sash hinges.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the clip for attaching the weight cord to the slide member.
The invention in its exemplary embodiment comprises a window frame 11 provided in opposite sides with suitable vertical guide strips 13, 14: and 15. An upper sash 12 of suitable construction is slidably disposed between the strips 13 and 14. Slide members or guides 17 and 18 are slidably secured between the guide strips 14: and 15 in opposite sides of the frame 11, and pivotally support two lower sashes 19.
Each of the slide members 17 and 18, see Fig. 7 illustrating the member 17, is provided in the form of a channel having a web 21 and side flanges 22. The longitudinal outer edges of the flanges 22 are struck outwardly substantially at right angles to form suitable retaining flanges or tongues 23 dis posed in grooves or recesses 23 in the guide strips 1a and 15. A portion of the material in the web 21 is doubled back upon itself to form a longitudinal outwardly extending fold or projection 24 adapted to form a weather strip for entering a longitudinal slot 24 in one side edge of the attached swinging sashes 19 when the latter is closed.
The sashes 19 are secured to the members 17 and 18 by special hinges, one of which is shown in Fig. 8. This hinge comprises two leaves or wings 25 and 26 having intertitting curls pivotally secured together by means of a suitable pintle 27.
The leaf 25 is suitably secured to the outer edge of its sash 19 by means of screws 37, and the leaf 26 in Figures 6 and 7 is suitably secured to the slide member 17. In the present instance, the leaf 26 is inserted through a slot 26 in one of the flanges 22 and is secured against the inner surface of the web 21 by any suitable means, such as welding. The leaf 26 is longer than the leaf 25, and has a projecting portion 28 inclined upwardly and away from the web 21, and provided with an aperture 29 for receiving a weight cord attaching clip 33.
Secured to the slide member 17 above the bent port-ion 28 of the hinge is a plate 31 having an end portion projecting downwardly and away from the web 21. The oppositely inclined portions 23 and 31 cooperate to act as a retaining means for a yielding element 32 disposed between the window frame 11 and the slide member 17. The element 32 tends to press the member 17 outwardly and serves to hold the latter yieldingly in any adjusted position. Although only one end of one slide member is illustrated, it will be understood that both ends are the same, and that both slide members 17 and 13 are the same, each having two hinges and two yielding elements 32.
The weight cord attaching clip 33, illustrated in Fig. 9 for attaching the cord 36 to the member 17 or 18 is formed of a single piece of metal fashioned substantially into a cylinder fitting over one end of the cord. The clip 33 is formed with a plurality of indentations or burred openings 35 to engage the cord 36 so as to secure the latter therein. The clip 33 is also formed with a suitable lip 34: struck outwardly therefrom so as to engage the portion 23 and secure the cord 36 to the slide member when the end of the clip is positioned in the aperture 29. The other end of the cord 36 is secured to a suitable counterbalancing weight (not shown). It will be evident that the weights assist the members 32 in holding the sashes 19 in vertically adjusted position.
It will be evident that the sashes 19 may be raised or lowered with the slide members 17 and 18, and may be swung outwardly or inwardly on .said members in any posit-ion of adjustment. The sashes 19 are held yieldingly in vertically adjusted position by means of the elements 32. When the sashes are in their lowermost position against the sill of the frame 11, they may be held yieldingly in various pivotal positions by means of spaced upstanding projections 39 formed on arcuate brackets 38 secured to the sill.
I claim as my invention:

l. A slide member adapted for use between a window frame and sash having, in combination, a body, spaced members on said body arranged to receive and detachably hold yielding means adapted to urge said member away from said frame.
5. A guide adapted for slidingly securing a sash to a window frame, having in combination, a body, means on said body for pivotally attaching said sash, and means on said body for receiving and limiting the longitudinal sliding of a yielding member adapted to make frictional contact between said guide and said frame.
6. A guide adapted for slidingly securing a. sash to a window frame, having in combina tion, a body strip adapted to be mounted in said frame, a hinge comprising complemental pivoted wings, one of said wings being elongated and bent outwardly and apertured in the bent portion, said last named wing being secured to said strip, and means in said aperture adapted to secure a window weight rope to said last named wing.
7. A guide adapted for slidingly securing a sash to a window frame, having in combination, a body portion having a slot in one side, a hinge comprising complemental pivoted wings, one of said wings being elongated and bent outwardly and apertured in the bent portion, said last named wing extending through said slot and being secured to said body portion with its bent portion being inclined upwardly and from said portion, a removable member in said aperture adapted to clined elements on said member, a resilient strip having its ends removably disposed between said elements and said member, and engaging said frame to hold said member frictionally in adjusted position, and a sash secured to said member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature at Batesville, Indiana.
