The present invention relates to fountainV pens, and more particularly to pens of the self-filling variety, provided with ink bags and compressing means-for the same.
The purpose of compressing the ink bag is to drive out the air therefrom. This permits a new supply of ink to be sucked into the bag when it is returned to its normal shape. The compressing means usually comprises aleaf spring that is longitudinally disposed within the barrel and that is movable transversely thereof in one direction to compress the bag and in the opposite direction to release it.
As this transverse movement back and forth of the spring is made many times during the life of the fountain pen, it causes considerable wear of various parts at one or both ends of the barrel, and of the manipulating cams or other mechanisms. This wear shortens the life of the fountain pen. Furthermore, the connections betweenthe spring and itsmanipulating cams or other mechanisms are often quite complicated, increasing the tendency to such wear, causing the pen to get out of repair frequently, and enhancing the labor cost. f 1
It is therefore an object of the present invention to improve upon present-day pens of the above-described character, to the end that their construction may be simplified, their life of operation increased and their cost of manufacture reduced.
With this and other objects inview, the invention consists of the fountain pen apre ferred embodiment of whichl is hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and defined in "the appended claims.

`v The barrel 2 of the fountain penis made of a tube and the ends of thev barrel are accordingly shown as open. The interior sidev faceof the barrel is shown at 4. One of the end faces 6 is provided with an opening 8. The diameter of thelopening is smaller'than the diameter of the interior face 4 of the barrel. An ink-bag 10 is disposed in the barrel and its open side is secured` in any wellknown way at the other end 12 of the barrel. The inkv bag is adapted to be compressed by a leaf spring 14 having intermediately 'l i secured thereto at an intermediate portion of the same a strip of metal 16. The ink bag 1s compressed when the spring is bowed out from the full-line to the dotted-line position `of Fig. 2, and becomes released when the spring is returned from the dotted to the full-line positionof the same gure.
,The pen 20 is carried in a slip section 22v that is simply slipped into the open end 12 stead of exerting a longitudinally extending thrust upon the slip section 22 tending to drive the same out of the barrel, engages merely the walls of the recess 26 and has no tendency to dislodge the slip section.
The actuationof the spring iseffected by a cam 28 acting upon a cooperating cam 30 upon the otherend of the spring. The ca1n28 is formed upon a tubular member32 of differing diameterv and is mounted upon a corren spondingly` shaped sleeve 34 of differing diameter separated by an annular shoulder 36. The sleeve 84 is fixed upon the barrel in a manner presently to bedescribed. The

A screw 40 extends through the sleeve and is threaded into a nut 42 that engages the interior of the end face 6. The parts are secured together between the nut and4 a heady 44. of the screw 40. A covering member 46 is secured to the portion of smaller diameter of the tubular member 32 so as to rotate therewith, and to this end the said smaller portion of the tubular member `lmay be provided with teeth, corrugations, or

In this manner the sleeve is rigidly secured to the end facev 6 of the barrel, but the cams 28 upon the tubular member'32 are freely rotatable in order to effect the longitudinal movement of the cam 80. A very simple construction is thus provided comprising a barrel in which the ink bag and the' compressing spring are contained, and a closure for the barrel at one end ofthe same in which the cams 28 for longitudinally actuating thefspring, are rotatably mounted about a portion thatisfiXed to the said end ofthe barrel. The closure contacts rotatably at the end 62 with the outer portion of the end face 6 and the cam 30 extends through the openings both in the end 6 of the barrel and the end ofthe closure that contacts therewith. The construction is such that a substantially straight spring 14 may be employed, as illustrated, except that one endy is bent `at 24 for the reasons above given, and the cam 30 isprovided j at the other end. `Because of. this straight construction, the spring will return with a sharpk click to its straight position after actuation by the-cams 28 and will main-` tain its shape without permanent buckling or bending. Such buckling, of course,would have a tendency to decrease the ink capacity of the bag 10.- The device is as simple as it is effective and requires very little repair and such repairs when necessary are very easily made.
It will, of course, be understood that the illustrated embodiment of the invention may be modified by persons skilled in the art without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. f
What is claimed is l. A fountain lpen having, in combination, a tube constituting a barrel having an interior side face, a slip section in an end of the tube, the side face having a recess disposed opposite to a portion of the section, an ink bag in the'barrel, a spring in the barrel for compressing the bag, an end of the spring extending in between the side face and the section and into the recess, and means for actuating the spring to compress the bag.

A fountain pen having, in combination, a tube constituting a barrel having an interior side face, a section in an end of the tube, the' side face having a recess near the section, an ink bag in the barrel, a spring'in the barrel for compressing the ink bag, an end of the spring being bent into the recess, the recess having walls on both sides of the bent end of the spring to confine the said bent end of the spring in the recess, and means for actuating the spring `to compress the bag. f
