CLOSURE AND POURING DEVICE FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed December 24, 1927.
The object of this invention is to produce a closure and pouring device adapted for use with containers of various fluids and which is not only useful as a closure for the container, instead of the usual stopper or cork, but which is provided with means for opening the closure to permit the fluid to be readily poured out of the same without removing the device from the container.
A further specific object of the invention is to provide a closure and pouring device of the nature set out which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easily taken apart for cleaning, etc., and which will be eflicient for the purposes set out, thus providing a single device which has many useful functions. 7
In carrying out the objects of the invention, I provide an arrangement of parts of novel construction, one illustration of which I have shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification hereinafter.
In the drawings, like parts in the several views have been given the same reference numeral.

In the device as shown in the drawings, the closure and pouring parts are shown as positioned in a container 1. This container is not necessarily of glass or of the shape shown and it will be understood that the part of the device fitting into the container will be shaped to provide for fitting the same into the opening in the container tightly so as to form a closure for such opening, similar to an ordinary cork or stopper, when the device is closed. The parts comprising the closure and pouring device itself are a casing 2 having a tubular member 3 adapted to be inserted into the opening in the container 1, which portion 3 is provided with a stopper positioned on and enclosing said tubular member, as shown at 4, which may be of cork, rubber'or other suitable material adapted'to form a tight joint when inserted in the open Serial No. 242,372.
and with an outwardly extending portion at one end provided with a downwardly extending annular flange 6 at its outer edge enclosing the upper end of the stopper 4. A threaded flange portion 7 extends upwardly from the upper s1de of the outwardly extending portion of the tubular member 3 by means of which the casing 2 may be removably secured thereto, as shown in Fig. 1. A closure member 8 is positioned in the casing 2. This closure member is spherical in form and fits into a correspondingly formed recess in the casing 2. A'handle portion 9 extends from the closure member 8 through an opening or slot 10in the casing 2. A passage extends longitudinally through the closure member 8 and its handle 9, this passage being shown A seat 12 for the closure member 8 is positioned in the casing 2, which seat holds the spherical portion of the closure member in position, bearing against the lower part of the same, as shown in Fig. 1. This seat' 12 may be in the form of a ring-shaped member having one end formed to engage the spherical surface of the closure member and form asufliciently tight joint to prevent leakage while permitting movement of the closure member. This seat may be of any suitable material, preferably slightly yielding in nature, such as rubber, cork, fibre, etc. The chamber 13 formed by this seat 12 is larger in cross-sectional area than the cross-sectional area of either of the passages 5 and 11. This provides a check chamber through which the fluid must pass when pouring the same from the container. This check chamber being larger in cross-section, as stated, causes the stream to expand as it enters the chamber from the passage 5 and the outer portions of the stream engage the portions of the spherical surface of the closure member 8 which surround the passage 11 and, as these portions are angularly positioned with relation to the direction of flow, tend to divert the direction of'flow of that portionof the fluid outwardly, causing a swirling inotion of the fluid in the chamber and operating as a check to the velocity of the stream passing out through the discharge passage 11. This feature is of advantage in preventing a too sudden rush of the fluid from the passage 11 at too great a velocity when the container is tipped for pouring.
Guide members may be provided on the closure member 8 and its handle portion 9, such guide members being shown at 14 in the drawings. These guide members position the closure member and handle and prevent the same from turning on its longitudinal axis from a predetermined position when the handle 9 is manipulated in the slot 10 from its open position, shown in full lines in Fig. 1, to its closed position, shown in dot and dash lines.
A beveled end 15' may be provided at the outer end of the handle portion 9 of the closure member 8 to assist in pouring.
It will thus be seen that a simple device is provided which may be used in connection with, any container and that the same may be opened or closed by a single movement of the handle portion from the dot and dash position to the full lineposition, as indicated in, Fig. 1,, and that the open or closed position is plainly indicated by the position of this handle portion. It will be understood that these positions may be reversed, if desired, by arranging the relative, position of the passage 11, and that various other changes in details of construction may be made without departing from the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a portion adapted to'be inserted into the container and provided with a passage extending therethrough, and a closure member movably mounted in said casing and provided with a handle portion extending through an opening in said casing to the exterior thereof providing means for manipulating said closure member, said closure member and handle portion. being provided with a passage extending therethrough which is brought into and out of communication with the aforesaid passage by the movement of said closure member, a chamber interposed between said passages in said closure member and casing having a larger cross-sectional area than either of the aforesaid passages-and' forming a check chamber through which the fluid passes with retarded velocity when said passages are brought into communication.
2. In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a separable portion attached thereto and adapted to be inserted into the container and providedwith a passage extending therethrough, and a closure member movably and removably mounted in said casing and provided with a handle portion extending through an opening in said casing to the exterior thereof providing means for manipulating said closure member, said closure member and handle portion being provided with apassage extending therethrough which is brought into and out of communication with the aforesaid passage by the movement of said closure member, a ring-shaped seat for said closure member removably positioned in said casing provided with a passage therethrough having a larger diameter and OI'OSS'. sectional area than either of the aforesaid passages and forming a check chamber through which the fiuid passes with retarded velocity when said passages are brought into communication.
3. In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a portion adapted to be in serted into and toy close the outlet opening of a fluidcontainer and provided with a passage extending therethrough, and a spherical shaped closure member movably mounted in said casing and provided with a handle portion extending through an opening in said casing to the exterior thereof providing means for manipulating said closure memher, said closure member and handle portion being provided with a passage extending axially therethrough which is brought into and out of communication with the aforesaid assage by movement of said closure mem er, a seat for said closure member positioned in said casing, said seat together with said closure and easing portion forming a check chamber having a larger cross-sectional area than either of said passages and in which the fluid passing therethrough from said first to said second passage is retarded in its velocity.

In a device of the class described comprising a casing, a stopper portion adapted to be inserted into the outlet opening of a fluidcontainer and provided with a passage extending therethrough, and a spherical closure member movably mounted in said casing and provided with a handle portion havinga beveled outer end and with guide members extending through and engaging a slot in the wall of said casing providing means for manipulating and guiding said closure member, preventing the handle from turning on its longitudinal axis from a predetermined position, said closure member and handle portion being provided with a passage extending therethrough which is brought into and out of communication with the aforesaid passage by the movement of said closure member, a

5. A device of the class describe comprising a tubular member having an outwardly extending portion at one end thereof provided with a downwardly extending annular flange at its outer edge and a threaded flange extending upwardly from said outwardly extending portion, a stopper positioned on and enclosing said tubular member with one end abutting said outwardly extending portion and enclosed by said downwardly extending flange, a casing having a co-operating threaded portion mounted on said threaded flange, a closure member movably mounted in said casing and provided with a handle extending through a slot in said casing and having a longitudinal passage extending therethrough adapted to be brought into and out of alinement with the opening in said tubular member, a ring-shaped member positioned inside said threaded flange with one endagainst said outwardly extending portion of said tubular member and its opposite end 15 engaging said closure member, the cross-sectional area of the opening in said ring-shaped member being greater than the cross-sectional area of the opening through said closure member or said tubular member, all of said openings being brought into alinement by the movement of the handle of said closure member being brought to a vertical position and providing a passage for the fluid which checks the velocity of the stream passing out therefrom.
