' carbon oils, to smaller recejm UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoEo PHIL() M. CLARK, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE OIL-TANKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,609, dated January 25, 1876; application filed Janua1y 4, 1876.
To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, PHILO M. CLARK, of Kansas city, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Wagons 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acconlpanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to safely carry, correctly measure, and speedily transfer without Waste, loss, or danger, kerosene and other Within stores, Warehouses, vessels, or orner places and vto this end the nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an oil-tank, with attachments mounted up on a Wagon, as will be hereinafter .more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a plan View, and Fig. 2 a side eleration, of my invention.
A represents a Wagon-truck or fram e mounted upon Wheels B, and provided with a tongue, C, for the attachment ot' the team. D represents a cylindrical tank, made of Wood or metal, and hung upon trunnions c ain boxes b b on the Wagon-frame. The rear end ofthe tank D is supported upon an adjustingscrew, E, passing1 upward through a cross-bar in the rear end ot'theframe. This screw E is used to level l the tank, for which purpose a spirit-level, d,
is attached to the side of the tank near the center. In the rear end or head of the tank is inserted a graduated glass tube, h, ruiming from top to bottom, and showing the precise amount of oil in the tank.
The oil is admitted into the tank through an opening, e, in the top. From near the bottom .of the tank, in the rear end, passes a tube, f,
poses herein set forth.
provided with a stop-cock, z', used for regulating the flow of oil from the tank When delivering, and to confine the oil within the tank at other times. The pipe f leads into a rotary pump, Gr, supported upon a platform, H, attached to the tank. This pump is used, when necessary, to force the oil from the tank through the hose or pipe into other receptacles which may be on higher levels than itself', or when, for any reason, the oil Will not reach them by gravitation. The hose or pipeI conveys the oil from the tank to the receivingvessels either by the use of the pump or by gravitation, and in said pipe is a stopcock, m, to prevent Wastage. When the oilis passed from the tank by means of gravitation alone the hose or pipe may be connected directly with the pipef. Cn the top of the tank is a safety-cock, a, to permit ofthe escape of gases which may accumulate.
By this device kerosene and other carbon oils may be carried safely, correctly measured, and speedily transferred to other receptacles, without waste, loss, or danger'.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An oil-tank, suspended upon trunnions on a Wagon-frame, and leveled by means of an adjusting-screw, for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The pivoted tank D, provided with the spirit-level d. and glass gage h, iu combination with the Wagon A B and adjustingscrew E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the tank D, pipe f,
With stop'cock i, pump Gr, and pipe I, with stop-cock m, substantially as and for the pur- IHIL() M. CLARK.
