Description
Aug. 27, 1929, J. w. LEWIS EAVES THOUGH HANGER I Filed July 26, 1928 Patented Aug. 27, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
JOHN W. LEWIS, OF YOUNGSTOVN, OHIO.
EAVES-TROUGH .HANGER'.
Application. filed July 26, 1928. Serial Nor 295,490.
Still a. further object of the invention is.
to provide an eaves trough hanger of the above mentioned character which includes a locking wedge for securing the parts in their properly adjusted position, a stirrup being provided for said wedge and being carried by the movable curved hanger. The suspension I bar is disposed through the stub and the curved hanger has means cooperating with the suspension bar to prevent swinging movement of the curved hanger.
Still a further object is to provide an eaves trough hanger of the. above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted to the purpose for whichit is designed.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention proceeds and when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application and wherein. like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the eaves trough hanger embodying my invention, showing the parts in their assembled relation.
Figure 2 is a view looking at the opposite side of the device.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the curved hanger showing the suspension bar in edge elevation and also the locking wedge and its stirrup, and
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 4E l of Figure 3, looking downwardly.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a channel-ed or vertically disposed sus pension bar that is twisted at its upper end to provide an attaching bracket 2, and this bracket is slightly offset as more clearly disclosed in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The edges of the sides of the channeled suspension bar 1 are formed with the transverse ly disposed teeth 3-as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3 and the purpose thereof will be pres.- ently described.
The gutter or trough hanger comprisesa curved support 4 that is formed of 'sheetmetal or any other suitable material andthe upper edge of this curved support is. formed with the laterally disposedears 5, certain ,ofthe said ears extending in one direction while .the
remaining ears are disposed in an opposite direction to provide a relatively wide space for engagement with the bottom .ofrthe. gutter or trough.
is formed with the vertically disposed=portion 6 and an outwardly projectinghoolr'? is formed at the upper end'of this :vertical portion for engagement over the innerupper edge of the gutter or trough in the. manner well known in the artand as isclearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The vertical portion 6 otthe curved support is formed with an inwardly. depressed portion 8 which extends longitudinally of the vertical portion for disposition within. the channeled suspension bar 1 and-the side edge portions of the vertical member 6 engage with the edges of the sides of the channeled suspension bar as more clearly disclosed in Figure 4.
A tooth 9 is struck out from the vertical portion 6 of the curved support 4 for engagement with one of the transversely disposed teeth 3, of the adjacent edge of one side of the channeled suspension bar, and for the purpose of swivelly securing the curved support in any vertically adjusted position with respect to said suspension bar 1, there is provided the substantially U-shaped stirrup that embraces the channeled suspension bar, and formed on the free ends of the arms of this U-shaped stirrup are the tongues 11 that pass through suitable slots provided thereforin the vertical portion 6 of the curved support 1. The free ends of the tongues are then bent laterally as shown in Figures 2 and 4, Whereby said stirrup is positively secured to, the vertical portion of the curved support and is carried thereby in a rigid manner.
The crown portion of the U-shaped stirrup 10 is stamped outwardly to form a tapered pocket 12, for receiving the locking wedge 13 that is formed at its upper end with a driving head 14.
The inner end of this. curved support t This wedge is rounded at its outer face for cooperation with the rounded inner face of the pocket 12, while the inner face of the locking wedge is flat for abutting engagement with the flat outer face of the base portion of the suspension bar 1.
When the parts are arranged as shown in the drawing, it will be observed that the locking wedge 13 will positively secure the curved support at in a rigid position with respect to the suspension bar and will furthermore maintain the tooth 9 in biting engagement with the serrated edge of the adjacent side of the suspension bar, so that said curved support cannot move vertically, and also the inwardly disposed portion 8 of the vertical member 6 will cooperate with the channeled suspension bar to prevent lateral movement of the curved support with respect to said suspension bar.
Whenever it is necessary to adjust the curved support with respect to the suspension bar, the locking wedge 13 is disengaged from its stirrup 10 by knocking the same upwardly and then said curved support may be moved freely along the suspension bar providing of course that the tooth 9 is out of engagement with the teeth 3. i
The provision of an eaves trough hanger of the above mentioned character will obviate the necessity of having to employ the usual bolt and nut connections to adjust the curved hanger with respect to its suspension bar, and furthermore, an adjusting means of the character such as disclosed and described will save considerable time and labor and will, at all times be positive and eificient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed.
While I have shown the preferred embodimentof my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In an eaves trough hanger, the combination of a channeled suspension bar twisted at one end to terminate in an offset attaching portion, said bar being formed with trans verse teeth in the edge of one side thereof, a
curved trough support, a vertically disposed portion formed on the inner end of said sup port, the intermediate portion of said vertical portion being pressed inwardly for disposition within the channeled suspension bar, .a tooth arranged on the vertical portion of the support for selective engagement with the teeth on the suspension bar, a substantially U-shaped stirrup, bendable tongues extend ing from the free ends of the arms thereof through the vertical portions of the supports, said suspension bar being slidable through the stirrup, a locking wedge removably inserted between the crown portion of the stirrup and the adjacent side of the suspension bar for positively locking the tooth in engagement with one of the teeth of the suspension bar to maintain the support in any adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
JOHN w. LEWIS.
