IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGI NG CRADLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [72,565, dated January 25,1876; application filed October 30, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GRODHAUS, of Bellaire, in the countyof Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swing Oradlcs and Cots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The same letters and figures of reference are used to indicate the corresponding parts.

After describing the invention, its nature and extent will be shown in the claim.

The object of my invention is to furnish a cradle or hammock which, being set in motion, shall offer the least possible friction to resist that motion.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my cradle, supported by the frame A. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views.

D is the shaft, which supports the cradle B, and isjournaled in the eyes M M. The cylindrical rods 0 O, tightly fastened in the grooves H H of the shaft D, sustain the cradle B, as shown. The eyes M M are lined with glass or steel. This glass or steel forms a bearing for the ends F F of the shaft D. The ends F F of the shaft D are shaped so that their lower surfaces will present but a single line or point for a bearing on the glass or steel before mentioned.

The cradle B, being set in motion, will continue for hours to swing back and forth from the momentum already given it.

The motion is noiseless and gentle. It has none of the objectionable features so often urged by medical men against the common rocking-cradle.

The cradle, cot, or hammock may be made in any of the usual and known styles.

Having now fully described. my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a swinging cot or cradle, the cradle B, provided with its supporting-rods O O, in combination with the shaft D, provided with knifeedge journals, the bearings M, provided with steel or glass linings, and the frame A, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
