FLOWER SUPPORT.

My invention relates to devices for sup porting flowers, and has for its principal objectto provide a device of this character for use in supporting flowers in vases of diverse shapes and dimensions, whereby a single device may serve with equal efiiciency in various situations, and variations of a preferred form may be produced for specific situations, the present invention being an improvement on those disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,491,925 and No. 1,491,926,

issued to me on April 29, 1924.

In accomplishing my object I provide a flower support comprising a base on which the spaced screens are mounted. The base is preferably of relatively small diameter, and is adapted by shape, thickness, material and other characteristics to fit into receptacles of various forms, such as vases, flower bowls, dishes, urns, baskets, boxes and the like, and seating on the bottom of a receptacle to constitute the foundation upon which the screen members are erected. The spaced screens are joined by any suitable means, a preferred form being unitary construction of a multiple plane, perforated element, and are supported on the base by a pedestal that may be integral with the perforated element and that is adaptableto space the said element from the base. I provide for a multiplicity of variations in the manufactured form of the device, and for interchange of parts, particularly the use of a holder of any desired design with standardized bases as will appear in the description. In addition therefore to the advantages of use, I provide by my device advantages in manu facture whereby the cost of production is low, and flower supports of the desired types and characters, and separate holders and bases, may be made conveniently and economically available to the public.

I have shown in the drawings several variations in .detail of structure, all using my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to application only to the variations displayed, the drawings being illustrative of method of application of the principles of my preferred structure.

Referring in detail tothe drawings:

1 is a base, comprising a body 2 which may be of a desired shape and a bearing portion 3 preferably integral with said body and constituting a longitudinal member thereof, the bearingportion being provided with a slot constituting a socket 4.

A flower holder-5 is provided comprising a plurality of perforated members 6, upper and 7, lower, said perforated members con sisting preferably of wire mesh screens as shown, although perforated plates may be used; mesh spreaders 8' and preferably spring spreaders 9 being provided securing and connectingv the perforated members together in spaced relation. A horizontally elongated pedestal 10 extending downwardly on the longitudinal axis of the lower screen 7 and connected with said screen is adapted to project into socket 4 thereby effecting engagement with base 1, the co-operation of base and pedestal sustaining the holder in a horizontal position, the pedestal spacing the holder from the bottom of bowl 11 in which the device may be placed for the purpose of supporting flowers 12 as disclosed in Fig. 1.

Legs 13 are provided for the holder 5 extending in desired directions and distances from the holder, adapted to serve as braces therefor, and shown in Fig. 2 as depending from lower perforated member 7 and aligned with the pedestal. The legs may, however, be positioned in any relatlon to the holder that conditions of use may suggest.

In my preferred use of wire mesh for the construction of the holder 5 of mydevrce, and as specifically illustrated in Flg. 2, I prefer to prepare a wire mesh screen having a width equal to the desired length of the contemplated holder, and having a length slightly in excess of the transverse periphcry of the holder plus the height of the pedestal. The overlapping ends of said wire mesh are then bent downwardly adjacent the axis of the lower aerforated member, the depending ends of mesh being brought together to form a unitary flange, portions of which are cut away, the cutting process producing the longitudinal limits of the pedestal 1G and legs '13, the dimension of pedestal and depending legs shown in their projection from the holder being considered as height.

I show in Fig. .3, 4L and 5 modified forms of details of my device which I will now describe, referring also to details already mentioned and to my modifications of the same. In Fig. 3, the bearing portion 3 of the base 1, previously described as "having a socket, is shown asan elongated transverse shoulder is. projecting upwardly from the base, and the base is pictured as ring-like. Using such a modification, additional lateral bracing of the holder by the pedestal projected into the slot is attained when such bracing is desirable. The shoulder may serve as a spacing factor for the holder, the pedestal in such case being itself spaced from the bottom of the bowl, the shoulder supporting the holder and its upper surface constituting ledges 15 on which said holder is stabilized. In Fig. 4 aring-like base is disclosed having the specified bearing member 8, the under surface of which is here 0011- tinuous. This modified form is used when another modification of detail is availed of, namely, the permanent attachment of pedestal '10 to the bearing member.

Fig. 4 also discloses modifications in the details of spreaders 8 and 9, the wire mesh screen in this case being prepared, in antici pation of such modified form, as having lat- .eralears of .suita ble extension adapted to be bent downwardly to constitute supplementary Spreaders 8, the lower edges of which maybe attached to lower perforated mem her 7 as at 16 to provide additional rigidity for theholderand to produce a holder completely enclosed by .its spreaders and thus providing additionalanchora- 'e facilities for the stems of the flowers. 2. In flower support, a base, and a holder comprising parallel vertically spaced ho 'izontal screens and means connecting the screens, said lower screen comprising a member having an integral pedestal portion engageable with the base for supporting the holder in spaced relation to the base.

3. A flower support comprising a base having a transverse elongated slot, a flower holder including a screen, and a horizontally elongated pedestal connected with said holder for mounting in said elongated base slot to support the holder in horizontal position.

4-. In a flower support, a flower holder comprising spaced parallel screens, a horizontally elongated pedestal connected with the screens, and a base having a slot to receive the pedestal and a shoulder to receive the holder for supporting the same.

In combination with a vase, a device for supporting flowers in the vase including a base, a holder including a screen and a pedestal mounted on the base f0 supporting the screen in spaced relation with the vase, and legs integral with said holder and extending therefrom for enga 'ement with the vase to stabilize the holder. 7

6. in combination with a vase, a flower support comprising a .base having a slot, a holder including a screen adapted for support in horizontal position in the vase, a pedestal connected with the holder and adapted to seat in said base slot for supporting the holder, and bracing members including legs depending from said holder in alignment with the pedestal and adapted to engage the vase to stabilize the holder in supported position.
