(Cl. -317) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for shaping a bedspread at the corners of the bed thereby eliminating the unsightly appearance caused by a haphazard drape of the bedspread material. The device has a split conical shaped wrap-around body of flexible plastic sheet material, the edge of the Wide portion of the body being decorative. The long edges of the body are detachably connected by tongue and slit connections. The body is formed with a series of closely spaced transverse slits for adjustably receiving a fan-shaped plastic sheet plate adapted to be inserted between the mattress of the body and the boxspring thereof for holding the conical body in upright position against displacement. The plate may be adjusted up and down along the body allowing for the raising or lowering of the cone due to any variation in height of the bed from the floor which may be encountered. The body is formed with means for converting its shape from a cone to a two-scallop shaped body or a three-scallop shaped body.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a device for keeping the bedspread neat and orderly at the corners of the bed, particularly the corners of the bed at the foot.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind that is conical in shape but convertible to a two-scallop shape body or a three-scallop shape body.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind with means for keeping the device in upright position against displacement.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind that is simple in construction, pleasing in appearance, economical to manufacture and lends itself to mass production.

3,381,320 Patented May 7, 1968 Detailed description of the drawings Referring now in detail to the various views of the drawings, in FIG. 1 a bedspread shaping device made in accordance with the invention is shown and designated generally at 10. The device 10 comprises a split conical body 12 of suitable plastic sheet material such as the thermo-plastic and thermosetting organic synthetic resins. Of particular importance for this use are the vinyl type resins such as polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl acetate. The edge of the wide portion of the body is decorated as indicated at 14. The body 12 is formed from the blank 13 shown in FIG. 2. The long edges of the body are connected together by tongue 16 and slit 18 connections along said long edges at the narrow and wider portions and by a tongue 19 and slit 21 connection at the wide portion, the slit 21 being disposed inwardly of the adjacent long edge. The long edges are indented midway the top of the body to form a hole 20 to receive the box spring corner and prevent the cone from protruding too far out.
In accordance with the present invention, at the narrow top end as viewed in FIG. 1, the body is formed with closely spaced transverse slits 22 adjacent one long edge of the body, the slits terminating in holes 24. The slits and holes provide means for receiving and holding a fanshaped plate 26 of similar plasticmaterial as the body 12 in radial horizontal position as seen in FIG. 1. The plate 26 is corrugated at its wider end portion as indicated at 28 and is provided with openings 30 and 32 to prevent slippage of fan 26 from between the mattress and box spring. The apical end of the plate is formed with a neck portion 34 terminating in a semi-circular head 36. The body 12 is formed with single end holes 38 and with pairs of intermediate upper and lower holes 40, 40, and 42, 42 respectively, and with a series of slits 46 adjacent the narrow end of the body 12, for a purpose later to be described.
In assembling, the long edges of the body 12 are placed in overlapping relation with the tongues 16 inserted through the slits 18, and with the slits 22 in line with the slits 46 at the narrow end of the body. The apical end of the plate 26, including the neck 34 and head 36, is in serted through one of the slits 22 and its adjacent aligned slit 46, the head 36 holding the plate in inserted position. By means of the slits 22 and 46, the plate 26 may be adjusted in position as desired.
In use, the fan-shaped plate 26 of the device 19 is inserted between the mattress 48 and the box spring 50 of the bed 54 and at the corner leg 52 of the bed 54 at the foot shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, with the body supported off the floor by the fan-shaped plate 26. The bed is shown supported on a floor 56. The body 12 provides a conical supporting surface for the end corners of the bedspread 60. As seen in FIG. 7, the corners of the bedspread 60 at the foot of the bed present a very neat and orderly appearance.
In FIGS. 10 and 11 the body 12 of FIG. 1 is shown converted into a scalloped-shaped body 12' for use with the bedspread shaping device. The body 12' is generally conical in shape somewhat similar to the shape of the body 12 of FIG. 1, but is formed with three scalloped portions 62, 62, 62 therealong. This is accomplished by placing a pair of elongated plastic strips 64, 64 in the holes 40, 40 of the top pair of intermediate holes in the body 12 and in the end holes 38, 38, one end of the strip being inserted in one of the holes 40 at the other end in one of the holes 38, across the space therebetween, and a similar elongated strip 66 is placed in the bottom holes 42, 42 in the space therebetween. The strips have heads 68, 68 at both ends thereof, of sufficient dimensions to permit insertion through the holes. The top strips 64, 64 are shorter than the space between the holes 40 and 38, and
the strip 66 is shorter than the space between the holes 42, 42 so that the material of the body 12 is gathered forming the three- scalloped portions 62, 62, 62.
In FIG. 12, a bedspread 60' is shown covering a bed 70 with bedspread shaping device having a body 12' positioned at a corner of the bed, at the foot thereof showing the neat, orderly and pleasing appearance of the corner of the bedspread, at said corner.
The scalloped-shaped body 12" shown in FIG. 13 digers from the scalloped-shaped body 12' of FIG. merely in that only two scalloped-shaped portions 62", 62" are formed in the body, instead of three. The seallops 62", 62" are formed by placing a pair of strips 66", 66 similar to strip 66, across the spaces between the holes 42", 42" and the end holes 38, 38 (not shown).
In FIG. 14, the body 12 of FIG. 13 is shown placed in position at a corner of the bed 60" at the foot thereof, to show the neat and orderly appearance of the bedspread at such corner.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A bedspread shaping device comprising a hollow conical-shaped body of flexible plastic material for shaping and supporting the hanging corners of a bedspread resting thereon, a fan-shaped plate and means of detachable connection between the body and plate for supporting the plate laterally of the body whereby the plate is adapted to be clamped between the mattress and box spring of a bed for holding the body in upright position at a corner of the foot of the bed.
2. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 1 wherein the detachable means of connection between the body and plate includes a series of transverse slits in the body adjacent the narrow end thereof, in aligned, one above the other, relationship, the plate having a neck and head adapted to be inserted through one of the slits, the head adapted to cooperate with the edge walls of the slit to hold the plate in supported position.
3. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 1 wherein the conical body is split longitudinally and means for connecting the long edges including tongues along one long edge and slits along the other long edge.
4. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 3 wherein the body is formed with an elongated hole along the long edges midway the ends of the body.
5. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 2, wherein the conical body is split longitudinally and means for connecting the long edges including tongues along one long edge and slits along the other long edge.
6. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 2 wherein the body is formed with an elongated hole along the long edges midway the ends of the body.
7. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 2 wherein the conical body is split longitudinally, means for connecting the long edges including tongues along one long edge and slits along the other long edge, the conical body being formed with an elongated hole along the long edges midway the ends of the body.
8. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 1 wherein the body is formed with spaced holes for receiving means for converting the body into a scallop-shaped body with three scallops.
9. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 8 wherein the means received in the holes for converting the body to a scalloped-shaped body comprises a plurality of elongated plastic strips with crossheads at both ends thereof, the heads adapted to be inserted through the slits and to cooperate with the walls of the slits for holding the strips in inserted position.
10. A bedspread shaping device as defined in claim 1 wherein the body is formed with spaced holes for receiving means for converting the body into a scallop-shaped body with two scallops, said means comprising a plurality of elongated plastic strips with crossheads at both ends thereof, the heads adapted to be inserted through the slits and to cooperate with the walls of the slits for holding the strips in inserted position.
