T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST L. PLASS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmhurst, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. g

This invention relates to supports and more particularly to a support adapted for use in the formation of benches, tables and the like.

An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily set up and which accordingly is particularly adapted for use in the erection of temporary seats, picnic tables and the like.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very cheaply produced, being formed from a single strip of sheet iron, and which provides a relatively broad and solid base in use.

These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation showing standards constructed in accordance with my invention employed to hold a plank forming a seat; V

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the standard is formed from a single strip of metal, the central portion of which is slightly bowed upwardly to provide a base 10. In the ends of this base the metal of the ends of the strip are bent upwardly and inwardly to form side members ll-and the upper ends of these side members are vertically extended for a short distance, as indicated at 12. At the ends of these vertical portions the strip is inverted and brought downwardly vertically, as indicated at 13, one of these downwardly extending strips 13 being provided with an angular foot 14 directed toward the other of the strips and resting upon the upper surface of'the base 10. The other of the vertical portions 13 is provided with an angular foot 15 directed toward the remaining angular strip and resting upon the upper stirface of the foot 14. Through the overlapping

13 and 12 aligned openings 18 are formed through which are directed bolts 19 having thumb nuts20 upon the threaded ends thereof.

In the use of the device a plurality of the supports are employed vertically with a horizontal support 21, this support being formed from a length of 2 x 4 or other suitably sized material having openings formed therethrough for the reception of the bolts 19 at proper intervals. Supports of this character can be arranged at spaced points and a seat 22 placed thereacross; It will be obvious that by employing two of the vertical supports of the proper height and a horizontal support 21 of the proper length a saw-horse will be formed. It will further be obvious that a support of this character is capable of practically unlimited application. It will be obvious that this support, being made from a single strip of sheet metal, may be very cheaply produced and at the same time will provide arigid and durable device for this purpose.

A support of the character described comprising a base, vertical portions centrally above and spaced from the base, braces connecting the vertical portions and the base at the ends of the base, other braces extending vertically between the vertical portions and the base at the center thereof, the vertical portions having .securing elements extending therethrough and adapted for engagement with a member to be supported, the vertical braces having portions overlapping one another and the base, and a single securing element extended through such overlapping portions and base and securin the same together.
