IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 72,537, dated January 18, 1876 application filed December 9, 1875.

To all 'whom fit may concei'n:

Be it known that I, DARIUS WILCOX, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Oonnecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree- Oouplings, of which the following is a specification:

M yin vention consists in constructing` a whiffietree attachment with a top plate made in one piece With a bolt which passes through the thill-bar, and'with one or more flanges or eyes for the recept-ion of a clip, by which the whiffletree is attaehed, said clip being made in one piece with the bolt and plate when but a single bolt,` flange, or eye is used, as hereinafter deserihed.

ln the aceompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspeetive view of portions of a whiffietree and thill-bar, with the attaelunent in position. Fig'. 2 is a Vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the attachment in its preferi'ed form.

W represents a part of a whiffletree, and S a poi'tion of the shaft-har, to which the said wlnffletree is to be seeured. A represents the top plate of the whiffletree attaehment. It is made in one piece, with the bolt B passing through the shaft-bar S, and may be made in one piece With a clip, O, embracing the whiffletree W, and construeted with a threaded end, D, passing through an eye or flange, E, on the margin of the plate A, and secured by a nut, F. The base of the top plate A is formed with a boss, G, to fit a suitable seat in the bottom plate H, which isseeured to the shaft-bar S, in a eustomary mani'ier. I and J represent a common nut and washer, for securing the bolt B within the shaft bar S.

lThe above describes the preferred form of my invention; but it is manifest that my improved top plateA may be used, if pret'erred, with a separate clip, constructed after the manner of a ca-rriageelip, the ends of which will pass through two eyes or flanges, E, on the margin of the plate A.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The top plate A and bolt B, made in one piece, and attached to the whiffletree by means of a clip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
