POCKET.

This invention relates to pockets and more particularly to pockets for such garments as overalls and the like.

One of the objects of this invention 1s to obtain an improved arrangement of pockets by superposing the pockets or providing a compound pocket, thus rendering it possible to arrange both the pockets at the mostsuitable and conveniently accessible point uponthe garment.

Another object of the invention is obtained by so constructing the pockets as to effect an economy in the use of material and furthermore to simplify and chcapen the manufacture of the garment by reducing the number of seams and consequently the period required for sewing the garment.

The details of one specific'embodiment of this invention as well as various other objects, advantages and novel details of construction of the same will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when con idered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a garment showing my improved pocket construction .e igure 2 is a vertical sectional View taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 2 2 in Figure 1; and

Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 33 in Figure 1.

In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated I have shown fragmentarily a portion of a garment 10 to which the compound pocket consisting of pockets 11 and 12 is attached. The pocket 11 is in the nature of a self-locking pocket similar in general details to that shown and claimed in United States Patent No. 1,299,552 dated April 8, 1919, to David S. Carter, and is more especially designed for receiving a rule or the like. This pocket is sewed to the garment by stitching 13, 14 and 15, the stitching 14 extending only a portion of the way and being preferably formed integral with the side seam 16 which connects the front and rear sections A and B of the garment. tegral with the stitching 17 by means of which an adjacent pocket 18 is attached to the garment. This leaves one edge of the pocket 11 unattached to provide an opening 19 through. which the rule or other article or tool can be inserted into the pocket.

The superposed pocket 12 is stitched as shown at 20, 21 and 22. The pocket 12 has only a portion thereof superposed with relation to the pocket 11 but at the superposed portions of the pockets 11 and 12 and at the points where the seams 13 and 20, on the one hand, and 1 1 and 22 on the other hand, coincide a single line of stitching will suflicc to attach the pockets to the garment. The lower edge 23 of the pocket 11 stops short of the bottom seam 21 of the pocket- 12 and the bottom edge 23 of the pocket 11 is not stitched to the garment so that the bottom of pocket 12 constitutes the bottom of pocket 11. The upper edge of pocket 12 is left unstitched so as to provide an opening 24 whereby a pair of pliers or other tool or article can be inserted in the pocket.

With this construction the amount of goods necessary to extend the pocket 11 from the lower edge 23 to the bottom of pocket 12 as defined by the seam 21 is saved, thus effecting an economy in material. Furthermore, by superposing the pockets in the manner herein described both pockets or the resulting compound pocket may be positioned at the most conveniently accessible point on the garment. The construction also lends itself to economy in manufacture as several lines of stitching are dispensed with. Obviously, the extent to which the pockets 11 and 12 are superposed with relation to one another as well as the position of the pockets with reference, to the garment and the shape and dimensions of the pockets may be altered as found necessary or convenient.

*What I claim as my invention is:
