CONTAINER.
Application filed March'28, 1928. Serial No. 265,353. v
' board box. In.this practical form of the invention, the box may be made from a blank of material scored to be folded in such manner as to form a bottom, side and end walls, the blank being cut so that when folded along the scored lines, the side walls Wlll carry at their ends flaps adapted to be turned in to lie interiorly of the end wall. The end wallis cut and scored to provide a tongue preferably of dove tail configuration and this tongue is adapted to be passed through slots provided in the free ends of the side flaps and the tongue thereupon bent downwardly or returned upon itself to lock the end wall in position and simultaneously anchor the end wall to the flaps of the side walls.
The arrangement is such that when the parts are assembled in the manner described, they will maintain their assembled relation and will not become inadvertently disengaged from one another.
Features of the invention, other than those specified, will be apparent from the hereinafter detailed description arid claims, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one practical embodiment of the invention, but the construction therein shown is to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 1s a fragment-a1 section on.the
, line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows one end of a flat blank from which the container of Figure 1 is formed.
By reference first to Figure 3, the blank is shown as embodying a flat piece ofcardboard or other suitable material 1. This blank is substantially rectangular in contour and .'is provided with lines of scoring designated 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Cuts 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are also formed in the blank and a line of scoring'14 joinsthe ends of the cuts 11 and 12. The blank'may be said to be divided by the cuts and scored lines into a bottom 15, side walls 16 and 17 and end wall 18 and flaps 19 and 20, the latter of which form continuations of theside walls 16 and 17, respectively. I
The cuts 11 and 12 converge as shown to form a substantially dove tail tongue 21 and the cuts 9 and 10 also converge for the purposes presently to be explained.
It will of course be understood that Fig.- ure 3 shows approximately one half of the blank and that the other half is a repetition of that illustrated. I
Blanks made as shown in Figure 3 may be shipped flat to the prospective user and are adapted to be assembled for use as oocasion-may require. The assembling operation is as follows.
The sides 16 and 17 are first bent up on the scored lines 2 and 4 into substantially perpendicular relation with respect to the bottom 15. The flaps 19 and 20 are thereupon bent on the scored lines 5 and 6 so as to extend in substantially perpendicular relation to the sides. Each end Wall 18 is thereupon bent up on the scored line 3 and its tongue 21 is bent on the scored line 14- into substantially right angular relation to the corresponding end wall. Each tongue is thereupon manipulated with respect to the adjacent flaps 19 and 20, so as to cause the opposite ends of the tongue to pass through the slots 9 and 10, the converging relation of the slots being adapted to facilitate itsoperation.
After the tongue has been fully introduced into the corresponding slots 9 and 10, the tongue is thereupon bent down as shown in Figures 1 and 2,so that it will, in efi'ect, hook over the lower edges of the slots, and this having been accomplished, the assembly is complete. Figure 2 shows the proper hooked condition of the tongue, yet it will be understood that even though the free endof the tongue straighten out somewhat and draw away from face abutting relation with the inner faces of the flaps, the dove tail configuration of the tongue will nevertheless preclude withdrawal of the tongue, so that by the'arrangement described, a very satisfactory and practical construction results.
The lock of this invention may be used for a large variety of purposes in the art of containers, but in the illustrative construction shown in the drawings, it is found to give very astisfactory results as, for ex= ample, in the formation of one section of a suit box. The arrangement is unusually simple, yet it' combines simplicity with strength in'a positive lock. Moreover, there is absolutely no waste of material. Every part of the rectangular blank is utilized to impart strength and rigidity to the structure.
The foregoing detailed description sets forth the invention in its preferred practical form, but the invention is to be understood as fully commensurate with the appended claims.
Having thus fully described theinvention, .what'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. container embodying relatively movable portions,'two of which are positioned in spaced apart relation in a common plane and are provided with slots extending inwardly from their adjacent edges and the third of which is provided with a tongue adapted to simultaneously extend through slots in the other two spaced apart portions and which tongue is returned upon itself to form a hook adapted to look said portions in such spaced relation and against inadvertent disengagement from one another.
2. A container embodying relatively movable portions, two of which are positioned in spaced apart relation in a common plane and are provided with slots extending inwardly from their adjacent edges and the third of which is provided with a substanflaps projecting toward one another and having slots extending inwardly from their free ends, and the end wall of the container being provided with a tongue extending through said slots and returned upon itself to form a hook adapted to lock the end wall to said flaps.
4. A contalner provided with a bottom, side and end Walls, each side Wall having end flaps projecting'toward one another and having inclined open ended slots extending inwardly from their free ends, and the end wall of the container being provided with a substantially dove tail shaped tongue ex tending through said slots to lock the end wall to said flaps.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
