Our invention relates to drilling machinery, especially to the type knownl as sensitive drills, in which high speeds of rotation of the tool-spindle are employed.
It is the object of our invention tov providenew and improved meansV for ycausing rotation of the tool-spindle; further to provide new and improved means for rotating the tool-spindle at high speeds without jar and at uniform rate at the tool-spindle; further, to provide novel means whereby reversals of rotation of the tool-spindle are instantly obtained; and, further, to provide novel means for quick cessation of rotation of the tool-spindle. v
It is the object `of the invention, further, to provide la novel belt drive for the toolspindle capable of imparting reversals of rotation to the tool-spindle and comprising a pulley and an endless belt located wholly in adj acency to the tool-spindle; further, to
provide a laterally adjustable head for the' tool-spindle and a belt drive for the toolspindle comprising an endless belt and pulleys movable wholly with the drill-headin the adjustments of the latter; further, to. provide a drill-head adjustable laterally lengthwise along a drill-arm and a crossshaft extending lengthwise of the drill-arm, and belt driving means between said crossshaft and the tool-spindle in thefdrill-head, movable wholly with the drill-head lengthwise of said drill-arm and said cross-shaft during the adjustments of the drill-head; further, to provide novel belt driving means between an upright shaft and said cross-shaft wholly separate from the belt driving means between said cross-shaft and said tool-spindle; and, further, to provide novel belt driving means between a drive shaft and said upright shaft wholly separate from said belt driving means between said upright shaft and said cross-shaft and said belt driving means between said crossshaft and said tool-spindle.

We do not herein claim the construction orthe arrangement of parts or details of the friction clutches or reversing mechanism herein shown and described, having shown, described and claimed the same in a copending applicationfor patent on improvements in clutching mechanism, Serial No. 198,425, filed in the United States Patent Ofiice June 13, 1927, and issued as patent No. 1,660,585, dated February 28, 1928.
Braking means are provided for the drillspindle which are locatedv on a rotative element in close adjacency to the drill-'spindle in order that the braking means may be effective upon a rotative part rotating at high speeds, whereby more Veffective and quicker braking is obtained. The brakingl means are exemplified as a brake-drum 131 about the drill-spindle, being secured to the sleeve 26. Levers 132, 133, are pivoted on pins 134, 135, on the drill-head and are provided 'with brake- shoes 136, 137. A spring 138, whose respective ends are secured tosaid levers, urges said brake-'shoes toward the brakeclrum. Means are provided for controlling thefmovements of said brakeshoes toward each other and for engagement of the brake-drum by the shoes when the Vclutches 55, 56, are in release relation for in V quic adjusted positions.

Control arms 141, 142, extend from opposite sides of a rock-shaft 143 journaled` in a bearing 144 in the drill-head. These control arms are fixed to said rock-shaft and have cram- plates 145, 146, secured thereto respectively. These cam-plates are provided with central notches 147 and with side notches 148, 149, the inner walls of the central notches being closer to the axis of the rock-shaft 143 than the inner, walls of the sidenotches. The respective levers are providedpwith rollers 151, 152. Each of the rollers isjournaled in ka fork 153 of astem 154, adjustably axially in a bearing 155 in the end of the brake-lever. A set-screw 156 is threaded in the outer ends of said bearing and limits the outward movements of said stem, a jamb-nut 157 holding said screw in When the rollers 151, 152, are in the notches 147, the brake- shoes 136, 137, engage the brake-drum 131, and when said rollers are in the notches 148, 149, the brake-shoes are out of engagement. The drill-head is slidable in guideways 165, 166, on the arm, and isclamped kin adjusted positions to thearm by usual means.
Lateral adjustment of the -drill-head also carries the endless belt36and the pulleys about which the same is received, the'whole` of the belt and allof the pulleysinoving with the drill-head. A comparatively short endless belt may be provided with such construction, and iirm driving of the tool-spindle at all times assured, and flapping and uneven running of the belt avoided.
The drill-arm is shown mounted ona column 171, extending upwardly from a base' 172, and is adjustable up and down on the column 'for ,adjusting the height ofthe drillarm, as by anelevating screw V173 threaded in a suitable nut in the drill-arm and operated kin usual manner. The adjustment of the pulley 201 may be accomplished by mounting the same on a ball-bearing 205 on' an. axle206 adjustable ina slot 207 in a bracket 208 extending from the column. The adjustment is obtained by an adjusting serewl 209 threaded in the axle and journaledin the bracket. The axle is clamped in ad-justed positions by jamb-nuts 211., 212, threaded over threaded portions of said/axle at the-respective ends of said slot, and. washers 213, 214, between said nuts and the respective ends ofthe wall of said slot. The belt 202 serves the purposev solely of form-ing driving connection between the-upright shaft and theHcross-shaft and is entirely separate from the belt 36 which forms the driving connection between thel crossshaft and the tool-spindle.y 4

In a drilling machine, the combination of a laterally movable drill-head, a toolspindle journaled thereon, apulley about said tool-spindle for driving the same, a cross-shaft extending crosswise of said head along which said head is laterally movable, a pair of pulleys about said cross-shaft translatable laterally along said cross-shaft, means for selectively connecting said lastnamed pulleys with said cross-shaft, a pair of direction pulleys journaled on said drillhead above said last-named pulleys at the respective sides of said first-named pulley, an idler pulley journaled on said drill-head above and between said pairs of pulleys, a drive belt received about said pulleys and comprising loops received respectively about said first-named pulley and said last-named pulley, and means for adjusting said lastnamed pulley toward and from said pair of direction pulleys for adjusting the tension of said belt.

In a drilling machine, the combination of an upright frame, a` drill-arm extending therefrom, a drill-head on said drill-arm, a normally substantially upright drill-spindle on said drill-head, a horizontal cross-shaft extending lengthwise of said drill-arm, said cross-shaft and said drill-spindle distanced from each other, a train of driving means between said cross-shaft and said drillspindle, said train of driving means including a pair of oppositely rotatable driving elements substantially concentric about said cross-shaft, clutches substantially concentric with said cross-shaft between said crossshaft and said respective rotatable driving elements, a brake comprising a braking element having an axis of rotation distanced from the axes of rotation of said rotatable driving elements and having operative connection with said drill-spindle, and control means having operative connections with said respective clutches and with said brake for normal braking relation in said brake and for release relation in said brake upon clutching relation in either of said clutches, and said clutches and said brake being at substantially opposite ends of said train of driving means between said cross-shaft and said drill-spindle.

In a drilling machine, the combination of an upright frame, a drill-arm extending therefrom, a drill-head on said drill-arm, a normally substantially upright drill-spindle on said drill-head, a horizontal cross-shaft extending lengthwise of said drill arm, a pair of oppositely krotatable driving pulleys about said cross-shaft, a pulley about said drill-spindle, intermediate direction pulleys between4 said last-named pulley and said pair of pulleys, an endless belt received 5"lo`opWise about said pair of oppositely rotatable pulleys and said pulley about said drill-spindle and over said intermediate direction pulleys, a brake substantially coaxial With said drill spindle, clutches sub- 10 stantially concentric with saidl cross-shaft lbetween said cross-shaft and said respective rotatable driving pulleys, said brake and said clutches being adjacent to opposite ends of said loop of said driving belt, and control means having operative connections With said respective clutches and with said brake for normal braking relation in said brake and for release relation in said brake upon clutching relation in either of said clutches.
