Levers 132, 133, are pivoted on pins 134, 135, on the drill-head and are provided 'with brake- shoes 136, 137. A spring 138, whose respective ends are secured tosaid levers, urges said brake-'shoes toward the brakeclrum. Means are provided for controlling thefmovements of said brakeshoes toward each other and for engagement of the brake-drum by the shoes when the Vclutches 55, 56, are in release relation for in V quic adjusted positions.
quick stoppage of rotation of the drillspindle between engaged relations of the clutches, which is especially useful during tapping operations or when reverse rotations k successions of the tool-spindle are desired.
positioning of said rollers 'in said respective notches holds the control-armr 127 in adjusted position- 1 The 'drill-head examplified is adjustable laterally on ya drill-arm161, as by means of a pinion 162, operated by a handle 163. The pinion meshes with a rack 164 extending lengthwise of the arm and fixed to' the arm. The drill-head is slidable in guideways 165, 166, on the arm, and isclamped kin adjusted positions to thearm by usual means.
Lateral adjustment of the -drill-head also carries the endless belt36and the pulleys about which the same is received, the'whole` of the belt and allof the pulleysinoving with the drill-head. A comparatively short endless belt may be provided with such construction, and iirm driving of the tool-spindle at all times assured, and flapping and uneven running of the belt avoided.
The drill-arm is shown mounted ona column 171, extending upwardly from a base' 172, and is adjustable up and down on the column 'for ,adjusting the height ofthe drillarm, as by anelevating screw V173 threaded in a suitable nut in the drill-arm and operated kin usual manner. The column is -rotatable'on suitable bearings about a post 174 extending rigidly upwardly fromthe base, and is arranged to be clamped in adjusted positions by a usual clamp 175 at the bottom of the column, permitting the vdrill-'arm'to be placed in desirable radial'positions. The
drill-arm is provided with a clamp-bearing 176 for clamping the drill-arm in adjustedv elevational position.
tioning the drill-arm in radial positions, are not more fully shown and described, for any suitable means for accomplishing these pur-- poses well-knownin the` arty may be provided.
It is ypreferred that the vcross-shaftl fbe driven by means of belting lin order that high speeds withoutnoise or vibration 'may be obtained. An upright shaft 181 is journ'aled in bearings 182, `183-,in the', post, and
has a pulley 184 fixed to it at its upper end.A The cross-shaft '31 has a pulley`185 fixed` A pair of direction pulleys 18,6,
The means for rais` ing and lowering the drill-arm, and posi*-y are interposedy between said pulleys and said studs.l v
A pulley 201is mounted on the column lower than the cross-shaft. This pulley is preferably adjustable for adjusting the tension of avbelt 202. 'd
The belt 202 is received loopwise about the pulley 184 at the top of the upright shaft,
therespective stretches ofthe belt being received over the direction pulleys 186, 187. One of these stretches is received about the pulley 185 between the pulleys 191, 192, the
- lower end of the belt being received loopwise about the pulley 201. l/Vhen the drill-arm isadjusted upV or down, the pulleys 185, 191, 192,. are adjusted to similar extent lengthwise of they stretch of the belt with' Vwhich they cooperate for maintaining driving relation between the belt and the pulley 185 ony the cross-shaft. All of these pulleys also move with thel drill-arm during adjustments to different radial positions.
The adjustment of the pulley 201 may be accomplished by mounting the same on a ball-bearing 205 on' an. axle206 adjustable ina slot 207 in a bracket 208 extending from the column. The adjustment is obtained by an adjusting serewl 209 threaded in the axle and journaledin the bracket. The axle is clamped in ad-justed positions by jamb-nuts 211., 212, threaded over threaded portions of said/axle at the-respective ends of said slot, and. washers 213, 214, between said nuts and the respective ends ofthe wall of said slot. The belt 202 serves the purposev solely of form-ing driving connection between the-upright shaft and theHcross-shaft and is entirely separate from the belt 36 which forms the driving connection between thel crossshaft and the tool-spindle.y 4
vAn endless belt 221 is received loopwise about a pulley 222 at the lower end of the upright shaft, and loopwise about a pulley 223 oni a drive-shaft 224, journaled in suitable manner, as in bearings 225, 226, on the base of the machine. The respective stretches ofthe belt 221 are receivedl over direction pulleys 227,228, rotating. freely about an axlev229, as by means of ball-bearings 230.
The axle: 229 is fixed ina bearing 2,31 which forms a slide 232 adjustable on the base,.as by means of set-screws 233. This adjustment Y isfor the purpose of. tightening the belt 221. rlhe direction pulleys 227, 228, are shown adjustable lengthwise of the drive-shaft 224.
To comv ensate for such adjustments the pul-4 ley 223 1s. shown provided with an elongated outer peripheral face, so that the belt 221 `may be received thereabout at any point in its'length. Thel drive-shaft may rotated at selective speeds, as by means of a belt 234 received about therespective steps of a conev pulley235 andof a ley not shown.
complemental cone pul- The endless belt 221v is independent of the belt 202andl of the belt 36. These belts, being independent of each other, are permitted to have independent adjustments for tension ofthe same," so that the power requirements of eachof lthe belts may be independently served'. Each ofthe belts is also of comparatively short length, so as to avoid flapping what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
