This invention relates to locking, devices for automobile doors, but is applicable to other doors of the swinging type where adequate protection is needed. I
An object is to provide the stationary post between two swinging doors of an automo-.
bile with a cylindrical lock of the Yale type. A further object is to provide said lock with an inwardly projecting shaft member turnable in a bearing, said shaft being pro-' vided with a latch adapted to engage or ref lease the two adjacent doors when turned through a quarter turn.
Another object is to provide drlve means, operable in both directions, for actuating the latch on the remote side of the vehicle simultaneously with the turning of said lockcylinder.
A further object is to provide an appro x1- mately right-angle drlve for said drive means.
Another object is to provide an approx mately right-angle drivefor the sald flexlble means.
Another object is to provide means whereby all four doors of an automobile may be locked or unlocked at one operation without exposing the operator to the risk of being injured by passing traflic.
These and other objectsare attained by the novel adaptation, combination and construction of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the body of an automobile embodying my improvement.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 1--1 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 11-11 of Figure 2.

The numeral 1 denotes a portion of the body of an automobile showing my invention as applied thereto. y
The two doors 2-2' are pivoted to the body 1 on the parking side by the four hinge-bolts as 4-4 with the door-post 5 between them; whereas, the two doors 3-3 on the traflic side are hinged as at 6-6* with the door-post between them.
The post 5 is bored for the cylindrical shell 8 of the lock 9 and counter-bored at 10 for free circular movement of the latch the details of construction of my 11 secured to the shaft 12 in such manner as to leave the projecting portions 13-13 available for the securmg thereto of the bearing plate 14 provided with the inwardly-pro ecting burr 15 raised on the inner side thereof. Keyed to the free end of the shaft'12 is the miter pinion 16. Secured to the plate 14'is the bearing'l'? provided with the shank parts 18 on to which is forced the flexible tube 19 and securely held in place by the clamp 20, well shown in Fig ures '2 and 4:.
Journaled within the bearing 17 is' the shaft 21 carrying the miter pinion 22 which intermeshes with its counterpart 16 as a means of transmitting rotary movement in either direction to the actuating flexible shaft 23, said shaft being secured against end play by the collar 24 which has on the inner end thereof the transversely bored connection adapted to attachto the shaft 22.
The remote side of the vehicle is furnished parts similar to those above described, except that there is no lock, the latch 25 being operated by counterpart pinions to those denoted as 16 and 22.
The, actuating shaft 23 is a nice working fit within the flexible tube 19 and both extend from the locking side to the remote side of the vehicle 1, there being no lost motion in said shaft 23, it follows that whenever the key 26 turns in either direction rotary movement will be transmitted, first to the shaft 12 carrying the latch 11 with it, the pinion 16 drives the pinion 22 which drives the said shaft 23 so as to turn the pinion 22 so as to drive the pinion 16 and thus actuate the latch 25 convenient way of connecting the latches 11 and 25 for simultaneous actuation is by bringing said tube 19 either across the vehicle behind the back seat, or within the upholstery of said seat, altho obviously said tubes could-be made to cross the machine in other ways.
Various other changes might be made in invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting. its scope, and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise de tails herein set forth.
I claim:
The combination with a vehicle body probetween said doors, of a key-turned shaft rotatable in either direction, a double-ended latch secured to said shaft, a bearing means for said shaft, one member of an oblique drive element fixed to the end of said shaft, and a complemental member carried by a shaft journaled in a bearing means secured to said est, a flexible shaft extending from the loc -bearing door-post to the remote door-post, a double-ended latch adapted to 10 engage both doors carried in' the remote door-post, and means for actuatin said latch carried by the remote end of sald'flexible drive shaft.
