FOLDING BOX.
Application filed .fune 20, 1928.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a folding display box made out of a one piece blank of fiber or cardboard for packing and displaying various kinds of food products or any class of merchandise that it is desired to display. The object is to have a box that can be stamped out of one piece of material and that requires printing of only one side of the box and also that it is adaptable to any size box and when packed requires no string for holding the top of the box in place over the contents.
ll attain these and other objects of my in vention by the means shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 shows a blank before folding, the dotted lines designating the scores for folding while the heavy lines designate either cuts or slots;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box after it is folded and set up for shipment, a portion of the cover being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the box in its open or display position, a portion of the corner of the box being broken away to show the manner of folding; and
Fig. 1 is a detail plan view of a portion of the rear of the box with parts broken away to show the manner of folding and locking and the relation of members, 3, 2 and 1.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a blank comprising a bottom 5, sides 1 and 6, side flanges 7 on the members 41 and 6, locking flaps 2 on opposite sides of the box and locking flaps 3 on the opposite sides of the box. I also provide the end flaps 8 and 10, member 10 having the top flange 9 integral with it and an extension lock flap 13 integral with the flap 9 but separated from it by the score 14. The end flap 8 has a top flap 20 integral with it and an extension flap 18 integral with 20 but separated by the score 19. The flap 18 is provided with small locking tabs 17 while the extension flap 13 is provided with an inserting tab 15. A slot 21 is provided in a plane with the score between end flap 8 and bottom 5, as shown in Fig. 1. The top flap 9 is provided with slanting slots 12 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, while the side lock flaps 2 are pro vided with diagonal slots 1. The extension Serial No. 286,761.
lock flap 13 is connected with the base strip 11, which in turn is integral or attached to the base end portion 27.
For making into a box sides 41 and 6 are brought up and locks and slots 3, 2 and 1 are brought together and engaged as shown by frontof Fig. This applies to both ends of box.
In making up the blank into a box the little tabs 16 are bent up and inserted inside of the lock flap 2 and locking flap 3, as shown in Fig. 3. These tabs help to brace goods in the box when set in display position. l Vhen goods are packed the flaps 10, 9 and 18 are brought around, placing flap 10 in front of flaps 3 and 2 with flaps 9 and. 13 disposed on top of the box or over the side extensions or flanges 7, as may be seen through the broken away portion of Fig. 2. Then flap 8 is brought to raised end position, 18 and 20 are brought over on top of members 12 and 18 and tabs 17 of member 18 are inserted in slots 12 of member 9. The box is then fully assembled and ready for shipment.
When the customer receives the box the top is unlocked and members 10, 9 and 13 are brought forward placing same underneath the box and bending at score 14: and inserting tab 15, as indicated in Fig. 41. Flap 8 remains in the end position and flaps 18 and 20 are raised up and folded towards the front at score 19, pressed together and end flap 13 is placed behind the long side flanges 7, as shown in Fig. 3, making a display lid.
What I claim is:
A folding box made from a single blank and comprising a bottom, sides, end locking flaps, end flaps, a slot between one of the end flaps and the bottom of the box, end tabs between the other end flap and the bottom of the box, extension flaps on the end flap hav ing the tabs, the first of said flaps having slots, a second extension flap having an inserting tab on the end thereof to engage in the aforesaid slot to support the box in an open slanting display position, extension and top flaps on opposite ends of the box, said extension flap having a slot, the outermost end flaps having lock tabs to engage in the slots in the flap folded from the other end of the box.
