COOL CHEST OR CHAMBER.
Application filed April 21, 1927, Serial N'o. 185,486, and in New Zealand February 11, 1927n This invention relates to a special con-V struction or Jformation of cool chest or chainber for use in the storage of perishable products or foods or for any other such like purpose.
The said construction embodies special means whereby currents o'l air may be cooled and passed through the storage chamber, such means depending for their action upon the well known natural principle exemplified by the cooling of a body of water through .its exposure to rapid evaporative action, as when contained within a receptacle the walls of which are of porous nature.
The invention consists in a construction of device, that may vary in size and shape to suit its special circumstances, and comprising a storage chamber having suitable provision for sealing it and for access thereto combined with a water holding chamber, the walls of which are of a porous nature, and a pipe coil, or coils, arranged within such water chamber and connected at the outlet end or ends with the lower end of the storage chamber, and at the inlet end or ends with any means :tor sending air through the coil or coils. This air therefore passes through the coil or coils, to be cooled by the surrounding water and is admitted into the bottom oi the storage chamber and then passes up through such storage chamber and out through an escape vent or vents arranged in or near the top thereof.
The said device or appliance may be made as a single article in varying sizes suitable for households, boarding establishments and hotels, employing the same general features .of construction. It may, however, be made as a compound article in which the two chambers are made separate and of different materials or by a combination of these methods or' construction. The air sent in to the storage chamber may also, if required, be subjected to a series of cooling actions by its passage through more than one coil on its way to the storage chamber.
The pressure to send the air supply through the coil or coils and through the storage chamber, may be obtained in any manner that is found suitable in each case, the means or method of so doing forming no feature of this invention.
In fully describing the invention reference will be made to the accompanying sheet o1L drawings, in which an article, comprising the storage and the water chamber as a single article ,of manufacture, is shown.

According to the form shown, the article is made of a shape to provide a storage chamber A and a water chamber B separate from each other by a divisional wall C and oi a material of a suitably rigid and porous nature, as for instance, an unglazed porcelain or pottery ware. If desired the portion of the walls surrounding the storage chamber A may be treated with any desired water prooling medium, or such chamber may be lined with any desired material.
The chamber A may be iitted up a safe with shelves or other supports and is made with an opening tor access thereto. In the form shown in the drawings it is made with an open top and such top has an airtight cover D iitted thereon which cover also eX- tends over the water chamber B.
The wall of the chamber A, near its top, is pierced with one, or more apertures E, to act as escape vents for the air currents.
The water chamber B is adapted to be lilled with water, as through an opening t formed in the cover D, and may be provided `with a draining cock F fitted into its bottom end.
Placed. within the said water chamber is a pipe coil G, preferably coiled to extend round near its Walls, and up through the height'thereof. The inlet H to such coil passes in through the wall of the chamber, near the bottom thereof, while its outlet J extends down inside the chamber and passes through the wall C into the chamber A near its bottom.
lf desired, instead of a single coil G, as shown, two or more coils similarly arranged and connected may be employed, or two or more coils connected to form a continuous passage, may be used.

being filled With Water, such water is cooled, and kept cool, by the evaporation that takes place through its porous Walls. Vhen air therefore is forced, or induced7 to pass in and through the coil G and'. from thene into v the chamber A, the' air Will be Cooled by the surrounding Water and will enter the chamber A and l'pass upward therein in its eooled state.
