UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROY E. JORDAN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY', ASSIGNR `T0 THE MOSAIC TILE COH- PANY, A CORPORA'EON.
RECEPTACLE FOR SHEET TOILET PAPER.
Application filed. March 5, 1924.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles for sheet toilet paper.
One of the objects of this invention is to produce ay receptacle preferably com posed of a single piece of ceralnic material, and having means preferably comprislng a bowing rib, for causing `flat sheets upon insertion to be bowed outwardly at the middle portion of the sheet to enable a ready gripping of the saine by the fingers for withdra ral thiueof.
Another object of this invention is to produce a receptacle preferably formed of tile material and having an inner wall which will provide edge1eceiving pockets to enable l5 sheets of varying lengths within predetermined limits to be accessibly mounted within the receptacle.
Another object of the invention is to produce ay receptacle, preferably composed of a single piece of tiling material, and having' on the rear or back surface a centrallylocated vertical depression adapted to substantially embrace the opposite corners of a post Within the wall and thus to make unnecessary the excessive cutting away of said post.
Another object of my invention is to provide a receptacle, preferably formed of a single piece of tile material, with a verti cally-disposed bowing-rib in the rear wall in substantial registration with a verticallydisposed withdrawal channel formed in the front wall and preferably having horizontal ly-disposed linger notches comn'iunicating with opposite edges thereof.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so combined as to coact and cooperate withv each other in the performance of the functions and the accomplishment of the results herein contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations the species or preferred form illustrated in the accompanying drawiugs,i which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a. receptacle embedded in a tile-faced wall;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figi: 1 illustrating the paper-bowing rib and the method of anchoring the receptacle on a poslt Without excessive cutting of the same; anc
serieu No. 696,964.
liig. 3 is a section of the receptacle on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to these drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, my recelgitaele or container for sheet "toilet paper comprises a housing `1 composed of a single piece of ceramic, vitreous or tile material and having` a face plate 2, side, top and bottom walls 3, 4i, 5 and respectively, and a. `rear wall` 7. The rear wall T, in the embodiment lshown, is continuously and sinuously curved to provide on the outer surface two outwardly extending ribs 8-St separated by a central depression 8", the said ribs and depression serving to embrace and permit anchoring of the reeellrtacle on a post 9 in the wall without excessive cutting of the post, it being merely necessary to ehanifer the corners 9"'-91 of the post for this purpose. The depression 8 may, if desired, be filled with plaster or other suitable material.. The housingr is provided. with a filling channel and has located within the interior of the same a bowing rib for causing the paper to be bent about the middle liiortion thereof7 and in the preferred el'nbodiment shown, the sinuous conformation of the rear wall hereinabove described provides on the inner rear surface of the receilitaclc a bowing rib 1() and endre ceiving pockets 11 and 12 at opposite sides of the rib 10. The sides of these endreceivine,` poetetsare aduallycurved,as shown at 11a-M12 to merge with the opposite side ralls of the housing and to permit the contact therewith of flat pads or packages of toilet paper of varying lengths, it being un dcrstood that the opposite edges of the shorter sheets will extend further inwardly and that the middle portions will be bowed by the bowing rib 10 somewhat more than edges of longer sheets.
As shown, the outer face 2 of the receptacle provided with a filling and withdrawal channel 13 which preferably has a length somewhat greater than the width of packages of toilet paper, so that a series of sheets or a pad or package of such sheets may be inserted through such channel 13, the opinisite ends being forced downwardly into the endfreceiving depressions 11 and 12, while the middle portion will be engaged and forced outwardly by the bowin rib 10 to cause the package or series of s eets to assume a longitudinallyl bowed condition transversely of the said rib and of the channel 13.
In the said preferred embodiment illustrated, the opposite edges of the filling channel 13 are provided with laterally-extending finger notches 14 which, with the filling channel, provide space for the purpose of enabling the insertion of the fingers of the user through the front wall to engage or pinch the outermost sheet of paper to cause 'a'further transverse bending thereof and to enable withdrawal of the same through the said channel 13-as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Having described my invention, I claim 1. A receptacle for packages of sheet toilet paper composed of a single piece of ceramic material and comprising a package-enclosing `housing having a rear wall provided on the interior of the housing with an integral bowing rib and end-receivin pockets at opposite sides thereof, said ri providing on the exterior a central depression and ribs adapted to embrace a )ost in the wall, und said housing having a ront wall comprising a rectangular wall-tile having an opening in alignment with said bowing rib.
2. A receptacle for sheet toilet paper composed of a single piece of ceramic material and comprising a package-enclosing housing having an interior bowing rib, said rib providing end-receiving pockets at opposite sides thereof, said housing being provided with a front wall forming a substantially rectangular wall tile and having a verticallyextending filling and withdrawal channel registering with said bowing rib and horizontally extending finger notches in the opposite edges of the filling channel.
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to the foregoing specification.
