EPHRAIM N. WING, OF GREEN BAY, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOG-RING BLANKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,360, dated January 18, 1876; application filed November 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRATM N. WING, of Green Bay, county of Prince Edward, State of Virginia, have invented an Improvement in Hog-Ring Blanks, ofwhich the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is an improvement in devices for preventing a hog from rooting, by inserting into the snout a one-tenth inch wire, six and one-half (6%) inches in length, having first been twice coiled around an awl one-fifth of an inch in diameter, thus forming a coil or twist, D, (Figure 2, in the accompanying drawing, in which the ring-blank is somewhat enlarged,) near the center of the Wire, one end projecting from said coil or twist being straight, D F, Fig. l the other, D E, Fig. l, curved.
A hole being punched in the end of the snout (not in the cartilage between the nostrils) with an aw], D F is inserted, thereby bringing the coil or twist D close to the end of the snout. D E, being slightly curved for that purpose, is brought over the end of the nose and back to F, which has been run through the snout, where the ends F and E, Fig. 1, are twisted together to fasten the ring.
The novelty consists in the combination of the central coil D with straight arm F and curved arm E, thereby permitting the ringblank to be inserted into the end of the snout, and obtaining a permanent fastening.
I claim as my invention- The improved hog-ring blank having central 0011 D, in combination with straight arm F and curved arm E, made and applied substantially in the manner described.
