Application filed March 15, 1927. Serial No. 175,607.
back, for reinforcing or strei'igthening the back against distortion by lthe expansive force of the bristles in their sockets when wet, and thus prevent theformation of a hollow in the middleof the back for the collection of water to prevent quick drying ot the bristles, as with brushes as heretofore made.`
Another object of my invention is to provide the metal back with openings extending therethrough along the sides of the back exterior of the bristles for draining water ofi' the upper surface of the back or quick drying of the bristles.
Other and further objects oil my invention will appear from the following specication taken in connection with the accom panying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a top plan view of my improved hand brush;
F ig. 2 a side view of the saine;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on line SMS of Fig. l; and
Fig. et is a fragmentary vertical sectional view'on line i-4l of Fig. 8.
As shown inthe drawings, my improved hand brush has a. back l, preferably die-cast from white o'r like metal an d given. generally rectangular form. Said back l is provided in its under side ywith a plurality of sockets or cavities 2, 2 to receive the folded upper ends of tuftsy of bristles 3, 8. The sockets or cavities 2, 2 are preferably arranged in a plurality of substantially parallel rows eX- tending lengthwise of thel back.
The back l has holes or apertures 4l, l opening into the sockets from the upper side of the back, so that loops 5, 5 of a wire 6 may extend into the sockets and engage under the folds in the bristles for holding the same tightly in the sockets, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.-. The wire 6 lies in grooves 7, 7 in the upper surface of the back l over and following the rows of sockets, as shown.
rl'he folded upper ends of the tufts of bristles 3, 3 substantially fill the sockets or cavities 2, 2, so that the bristles may be held tightly in the sockets and thus notA loosen and fall out in the use of the brush. Vvlhen wet, the folded upper ends of the bristles expand and in cast metal backs as heretofore designed, the backs have been distorted downward in their midportions, forming hollows for water to collect and prevent quick drying of the bristles.
To overcome this objection, I cast upright flangesS, 8 along the opposite sides of the back l, as shown in the drawings. Theser ianges 8, 8 project above the upper surface of vthe back and extend substantially the full length thereof and reinforce or strengthen the back against distortion when the folded upper ends of the bristles expand in their sockets 2, 2 when wet. The side portions 9, 9 of the back between the outermost side rows of bristles 3 and the flanges 8 are inclined downward from the flanges, and each is provided with a row of holes or openings l0, l() extending therethrough exterior of the bristles for draining water off the upper surface of the back `l for quick drying of the bristles. The back l over the bristles is in ellect solid for the holes 4 are closed by the wire loops 5k and would not allow the channel formed by the back l and flanges 8 to drain if it were notfor the provision of the holes l0. These are an important feature of niy invention because they prevent water collecting on the back toy hinder drying of the bristles.
The upright flanges 8, 8 form hand grasping portions at the sides of the back so that the brush may be readily picked up and handled while in use. To prevent slipping ot the lingers oil these flanges 8, they are corrugated along the outer side surfaces by means of a plurality of grooves ll, 1l, as shown in F 2 and 3.
The details of structure shown and described may be variously changed and modirfied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
l. A hand brush having a cast metal back having a relatively thin ilat body provided with a plurality of sockets in its under side, bristles substantially illing said sockets, means holding' the bristles therein, and upright flanges cast on the body alongthe opposite sides thereof and extending above the saine, said flanges providing hand grasping portions for the body and also strengthening the body against distortion by the expansive force `of the bristles in the sockets when wet.
2. A hand brush having a cast metal back having a relatively thin flat body provided with a plurality of sockets in its under side,
bristles substantially filling said sockets, ineans holding the bristles therein, and upright iianges cast on the body along the opposite sides thereof and extending above the saine, said flanges forming with the body an upwardly opening channel, said back having a plurality of openings extending therethrough for draining said channel.
3. A hand brush having a east niet-al back with a. plurality `of sockets in its under side bristles substantially filling said sockets, and mea-ns holding the bristles therein, said back having its side portions extending beyond the bristles and extending upward to provide ith the back an upwardly opening channel, said back having a plurality of drain openings in its side portions exterior of the bristles.
el. A hand brush having a cast metal back with a plurality of sockets in its under side, bristles substantially filling said sockets,
means holdinO' the bristles therein and u rright langes cast on the back along the opposite sides thereof, said anges providing grasping portions for the back and being corrugated along their outer sides.
5. A hand brush having a cast metal back with a plurality of sockets in its under side, bristles substantially filling said sockets, and inea-ns holding the bristles therein, said back having its side portions inclined upward and terminating in upright flanges, said inclined portions having a plurality of drain openings extending therethrough exterior of said bristles.
6. A hand brush having a cast inetal back with a plurality of sockets in its under side, folded tufts of bristles having their folded ends inserted in and substantially filling said sockets, wire loops engaging the folded portions of said bristles holding the saine in said sockets, and upright flanges cast on the back along its opposite sides, said back having drain openings extending therethrough inside of and along said flanges.
ln testimony whereof I aiiiz; iny signature this 9th day of March, 1927.
