Application filed March 25, 1922. SerialNo. 546,560.
particularly to brushes of that type having' bristle holders provided with a plurality of nipples forming` sockets in which the bristle tufts are secured.
One object of my invention to secure or fasten each tuft of bristles in thebristle holder by a staple haring its prongs clinched against the back of the holder, thus providing a separate fastener for each tuft of bristles and avoidinga continuous and unbroken fastening wire as heretofore eniployed in brushes of this ojeneral type, with n the result that the bristles may be secured more tightly in the holder and fastened. with much more ease and dispatch than with the single wire as heretofore.
Another object of my invention is to direct the pointed ends of the staple prongs, on being clinched, against the back of the bristle holder and into the material of the holder so as to secure not only an anchorage for the clinched ends of the staples to hold them against lateral movement.y but also to effect a tight drawing action on the bristle tufts into the nipples or sockets 'in which :i5 `they are secured.` and thus hold the bristles tightly in place.
rlhe invention consists further in the matters hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
.In the accompanying` drawingsy Figure 1 is a top plan view of a brushenr bodying the features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan view of one of the longitudinal bars of the Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken on line 3-3 of 2; andl Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse vertical sec-` tional views taken on lines 4--4- and 5 5,
The brush shown in the drawings has a back in the form of an open frame 1,l from one end of which projects a handle 2. The latter is in the plane of the back and is preferably made integral therewith bypcast which form between them bars k5 inwhich the'tufts of bristles 6, 6 are secured inaccordancewith my invention. Each bar 5 has a row of depending` nipples 7 forming sockets to receive thetufts of bristles 6. rlhe back 1 beingin the forni` of an open frame, and the bristle holder 3 being slotted. allows holding lthe brush under `a faucetand running water through the brush for cleansing the bristles and keeping` the brush clean and sanitary. l g
For securing `the tufts of bristles 6 in' the sockets formed by the nipples` 7,y 7 l-provide for each tuft of bristles a securing member inthe form of a staple 8. As shown in the drawings, each tuft of bristles is `doubled on itself to form a loop 9 at gthe folded end of the tuft. staple 8 is engaged with the loop 9 in the bristle tuft and both are inserted into` a nipple 7 with the prongs 11, 11 of the-staple projecting beyond the bristle tuft.l Each bar has a plurality of apertures or holes 12, 12. one for each `of the nipples 7 on' the bar 5. Y end into its associated nipple yand at its upper end into a groove 13 in the upper surface of the vbar 5 and common to all yofthe nipples on said bar.
ln inserting each staple 8 into a nipple' 7, its prongs 11 are passed through the aperture 12 of that nipple and project into and above the `groove 13; The upper ends of the prongs 11, 11 are then bent or clinched against the bottom ofthe groove 13 on opposite sides of the aperture`12-- ln clinching' theprongs, the pointed ends thereof are `directed downward. againstthe bottom ofthe groove 13 and are impinged or embedded in the metal of the bristle holder,` as shown in lligrsand. i 5
The pointed ends of theprong's 11, 11 being' in contact with thebars' 15 onopposite rll'he looped portionf10 of the Each aperture 12 opens at its lower i sides of the aperturesr 12 and curved' downof theprongs downward into engagement with the bars prevents downward movement of the staples 8 to loosen the bristle tufts engaged thereby. Also the staples 8 holding the folded portions 9'` of the bristle tufts 6 tightly against the ends of the nipple sockets holds the staples against upward movement and this is further guarded against by reason of the fact that the looped portions 10 of the staples in securing the bristle tufts in'place are widened out to an extent greater than the apertures 12, as shown in Fig. e.
ByA the construction described, there is a separate fastener for each of the bristle tufts 6; thus` avoiding the use ofy a continuous and unbroken wire engaging all of the bristle tufts distributed over the entire surface' of the'bristle holderas heretofore. This "is lan advantage in that the fastening ofthe bristle tufts in the nipples may be facilitated by requiring' only the tightening of each fastener in place, and the tightening' effect of one fastener is not: dependent on the tension put on another as with a continuous strand of; wire as heretofore.
Moreover, by having a separate fastener for each bristle tuftl, the variation in the material may be readily compensated for by tightening the particular fastener. Then again, the factthat the pointed ends of the staple prongs ll are impinged against Vor embedded in'y the metal of the 'bristle holder prevents the staples'from creeping while the brush is inl use and thus holds the bristles tightly in place.- Moreover, the prongs of the staplesibeing turned down toward the body of the brush holder effects a tight fastening of the bristles'in placeas heretofore mentioned. Also the pointed ends ofthe prongs being embedded in the metal of the bristle holder prevents the possibility of the prongs projecting' beyond the bristle holder to scratch'tlie hand or catch in theclothing of the user of the brush.
After the bristle tufts 6, 6 are anchored 'or fastened'v inl the nipples 7, 7 by the staples 8, 8, the outer ends 14 of the nipples are bent o'r swaged inward'y against the bristles, yas
shownin the drawings and more particularly` in Figs. 3 and if thereof. This aids in clamping the bristles in the nipples 7 and thus co-operates withl the staples 8 in securing. t-hel bristles tightly in place. "The'outer -end of the left-hand nipple 7 in Fig. 3 is shown inv dotted lines 1'5 before being bent i-Irw'ard `v against the tuftl of bristles in that nipple.
I= claim as-In'y invention:
1..A bristle holder, comprising a body portion having: bristle receiving sockets; said holder having apertures extending therethrough into said-sockets, folded tufts of bristles in said sockets, and a separate staple for fastening each bristle tuft in its socket, said staples engaging the folded portions of the bristle tufts and having their prongs extending 'through said apertures, the prongs of said staples being clinched against the `side 'of the holder opposite said sockets and having their pointed ends embedded in the same on opposite'sides of said apertures.
2. A bristle holder, comprising a body portion having bristle receiving sockets on its under side, said holder having apertures extending therethrough into said sockets, folded tufts of bristles in said sockets, and a separate staple for fastening eaclibristle tuftl in its socket, said staples engaging the folded portions of the bristle tufts and having their prongs extending through said apertures above the upper side of said holder, the prongs of said staples being clinched against the upper side of said holder by being curved downward toward the same and having their pointed ends embedded therein on opposite sides of said apertures. y
8. A bristle holder, comprising a body portion having bristle receiving sockets on its under side andr arranged inl rows, said holder having grooves in` its upper side above said rows of sockets, said holder havin@ apertures extending therethrough and opening into said grooves and' sockets, respectively, folded bristletufts in saidsockets, andl a separate staple for fastening cach bristle tuft into its'socket,v said staples engaging the folded portions of the bristle tufts and having their prongs extending through said apertures into said grooves, the prongs of said staples being clinched against the bottoms of 'said grooves and having their pointed ends en'lbeddedlin the holder on opposite sides of said apertures.
Il. A bristle holder, comprising a slotted body portion' having connected bars, each bar having a row of nipples on its under side, each bar having a groove in its upper side above the nipples thereon, said bars being provided with apertures opening into said grooves and" nipples, respectively, folded tufts of bristles in said nipples, and a separate staple for fastening each bristle tuft in its nipple,` said staples engaging the folded'portions ofthe bristle tufts and having their prongs extending through said apertures, the prongs'of'said staples being clinched against' the bottoms of saidV grooves and having their ends embedded in the same on opposite sides of said apertures.
In testimon'y that I claim the foregoing as my inventiion, I affix my signature this 3rd day of March, A. D. 1922.
