D. S. CONNELLY SANITARY COVE FOR FLOOR COVERINGS F iled June 20, 1928 Patented July' 30, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
DONALD S. CON'NELLY, OF WOOSTER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO. THE SAFETY STAIR TREAD COMPANY, OF WOOSITER, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SANITARY COVE FOR FLOOR QQVERINGS.
Application filed June 20,
My invention relates to sanitary coves for floor coverings, which areparticularly adapted for providing a combined finishing member forthe intersection of a floor and a Side wall, and for protecting and providing a sanitary finishing joint for the side edges of the floor covering, such as linoleum, composition, cork tile, rubber tile, and similar materials, which when used on floors, are
diflicult to finish in a sanitary and sightly manner at their juncture with the side wall.
The objects of the present im rovements include the provision of a cove w ich in one form may be used either in connection with '15 an original floor covering, or in another form in connection with a floor covering which has been laid directly over an original worn out floor covering which may already be provided with a cove.
These and ancillary objects are attained in a cove member whose construction and arrangement is hereinafter 'set forth in detail and claimed, and which may be stated in general terms as including a preferably in- 2 tegral structure having faces adapted for abutment against a floor and wall at the in-' tersection thereof or against a .cove laid.
thereover, and faces providing an interlocking engagement for the side edges of a floor covering.-
Preferred embodiments of the present 1m- 1928. Serial No. 286,862.
erably angular with the lower face 11, tl'lllSf tapering the securing flange 14 to a relatively ,thin outer edge 16.
The'securing flange is provided with plurality of-suitably spaced and preferably countersunk apertures 17 through which screws or nails may be'passed for fastening the cove to the floor.
The side face 12 of the cove comprises the side face of an upwardly protruding protectlng. flange 18 which preferably includes an upper preferably curved cove face 19 extending from the upper edge 20 of the protecting flange 18 downwardly to an edge 21,
located intermediate the edges 20 and 16.
The edge 21 is preferablythe outer edge of a laterally extending tongue 22 overhanging the securingflange 14 at a distance thereabove equal to or slightly greater than the provements are illustrated in the accompanyf/d'epth of a usual floor covering, thereby prolng drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 1s a fragmentary obhque perspective view illustrating one embodiment of my improved sanitary cove, as installed wlth an original floor covering;
Fig. 2, a detached fragmentary oblique perspective view of the cove illustrated in 40 Fig. 1; v Fig. 3, a\ fragmentary oblique perspective view illustrating another embodiment -of my.
improved dove as installed-0111b subfloor, which may be a worn out original floor coverin having an original cove; and
Fig. 4, a. detached fragmentary oblique I erspective view of my improved cove of 1g. 4 I
Similar numerals re'ferto similar parts throughout the'several'views.
' The embodiment of my improvedcove indicated generall at 10 in Figs. 1 and 2 includes a refera 1y integral structure which may prefrably be made -by extruding brass, aluminum, or similar material, or which rigidity.
viding an interlocking engaging notch 23 for the side edge of a floor covering.
In use, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the 'cove 10 is secured so that its outer faces .11 and 12 abut the floor 24 and a side wall 25 at the intersection thereof, and the side edge 26 of the floor covering 27 is inserted into the notch 23, and theupper downwardly curved surface of the face 19, .thus forms a sanitary connecting surface between the outer surfaces of the floor covering 27 and the wall 25, and the side edge 26 of the floor covering is adequately protected by the overhanging tongue 22. a
The embodiment of my improved cove indicated generally at 110 in Figs. 3 and 4 includes a prefer bly integral structure which may prefera ly be made by extruding brass, aluminum, or similar material, or
which may be formed in' a well known manner from any other desired material having the required characteristics of strength and Thecove 110 includes a normally bottom plane face 111, and a normally side curved face 112, extending tangentially from the plane face 111.
a 5*. The bottom face lllpreferably comprises thelower face of a securing flange 114, the.
' screws or nails may be passed for fastening the cove to the floor.
The curved side face 112 of the cove comprises theside face of a curved upwardly protruding protecting flange 118 which preferably includes an upper cove face 119 extending from the upper outer edge 120 of the protecting flange 118 to an edge 121 located intermediate the edges 120 and 116.
The edge 121 is preferably the outer edge of a laterallyw extending tongue 122 overhanging the inner upwardly curved end of the uppersurface 115 of the securing flange 114:;
The lower face of the tongue 122 is referably an angled face 122 extending rom the edge 119 downwardly and towards the a floor covering.
edge 120, to meet the upwardly curved inner end of the upper face 115 forming the angled notch 123 whereby I. an interlocking engagement is provided for the side edge of The cove 110 is particularly designed for use in connection with recovering a floor 124 which may have a subfloor 12 1' thereon com-' surface 130 of the original cove, and the improved cove 110 is thus secured as illustrated in Fig. 3 with the surfaces 112 and 131 in abutment, and the side edge 126 of the new floor covering 127 is engaged by the tongue 122; thus forming a sanitary connecting surface between the outersurfaces of the floor covering 127 and the original cove 130, and the side edge 126 of the new floor covering is adequately protected by the overhanging tongue 122.
I claim y A cove including faces adapted for abutment against floor and wall faces, faces proyiding an interlocking engagement for the side edges of a floor covering, and a cove face, a floor abutment face 'and an interlooking engagement face "forming a securing flange for connection with. a floor, and an interlocking engagement face. and the cove face forming atongue overlapping the edge of a floor coverin engaged by the interlocking engagement aces.
In-testimonythat I claim the above, I
have hereunto subscribed my name.
