BLIND FASTENER FOR WALL AND CEILING BOARDS Filed Sept. 12, 1936 ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 16, 1937 PATENT OFFICE 2,099,632 BLIND FASTENER- FOR WALL AND CEILING BOAR Frederick E. Starr, Belzoni, Miss. Application September 12, 1936, Serial No. 100,529
6 Claims.
The invention relates to wall and ceiling fasteners and more especially to concealed or blind fasteners for wall and ceiling boards.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein the same when applied to the studs or floor joists and have fastened thereby fiber boards or other coverings, of natural or artificial composition for walls and ceiling such fasteners will be concealed and the boards will be free for expansion and contraction resultant-from climatic changes and particularly when heating an enclosure without liability of the boards becoming loose or accidentally detached.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein the necessity for the nailing of the wall and ceiling boards is entirely eliminated and such fasteners in association with the boards can be placed notwithstanding the fact that the studs may not be evenly separated from each other and the requirement'for special tools for cutting the edges of the boards to assure proper fit will be avoided, there being no waste and a perfect finish can be had to the wall and. ceiling on the layingthereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein the wall and ceiling boards will be prevented from curling at their ends and will be firmly and securely fastened in place with the fastener concealed from view.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in form and is attached to the wall or ceiling board in a novel manner, the well or ceiling boards being preferably of the fiber type and a smooth and uniform exposed surface is assured to the wall and ceiling.
A still further'object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of-this character, which is extremely simple in its construction, readily and easily applied and removed, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction,
. combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a fragmentary elevation showing a wall built with the fasteners constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of per se.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified form but used jointly with the preferred form. Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally portions of studding of the framework of an enclosure and 13 boards of the fiber type adaptable for erection of walls or ceilings while 0 designates generally a fastener constituting the present invention and hereinafter fully described.
The fastener D is in the form of a clip made the fastener from a single sheet metal blank which is split from opposite ends to provide an intermediate solid portion it which is coextensive with the longitudinal extent of said blank. The splits from opposite edges allow for the reverse bending of such blank to provide inner and outer wings l l and i2, respectively, these being reversely disposed to each other and at right angles to the intermediate portion it thus effecting between the wings seats it for accommodating therein edge tongues it and it, respectively, which are V out into each board B at opposite edges thereof and thus effecting an underlap tongue it! and an overlap Ill, respectively, thereto. Thus in the laying of the boards B edge to edge they will be disposed in overlapped relation to each other as is clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The edge tongues it and i5 have bevels it so as to permit the easy seating of these tongues in the clip or fastener before described and facilitate expansion and contraction of the interfitted planking or boarding in the expansion groove it. Each clip is fastened by nails or other fasteners 9 to a stud A or a floor sill at the ceiling side thereof and such nails or fasteners B9 are passed through holes in the wings H and i2 and driven into the studding or sill while the tongues M and i5 are introduced into the seats l3 between the wings ill and i2. Thus the clip having the wings H and I2 in opposite directions becomes the locking terminal between adjacent boards B and by the overlaps of these boards the said clips are concealed from view, adequate room being had for expansion and contraction of the wall and ceiling covering in the expansion modificationof fastener which supplements the fastener hereinbefore described and comprises a substantially U-shaped clip 2i having the inner and outer wings 22 and 23, respectively, at right angles to an intermediate straight portion 24. This clip 2| is ,a'terminal lock for each end of the board B and such clip is fastened similarly to the clip hereinbefore set forth. The end of the board seated in the clip 2i has the inset edge tongue hereinbefore set forth.
In the setting or installation of a wall board, it is essential to start at any corner which is a left hand corner and at such point the clip 2| is fastened in place. The end of the plank of the special construction as before mentioned is seated in such clip and the longitudinal edge portions of the plank are seated in the clips fastened to the studding A which latter clips are arranged horizontally on the respective studding of the wall and thereafter successively additional planks are brought into place in the manner as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
What is claimed is:
1. Thecombination of planking, boarding or other wall or ceiling covering having under and overlapped edge portions, edging tongues on said under and overlap portions, and fasteners having reversely extending wings and an intermediate straight portion providing seats between the wings for accommodating the edge tongues of adjacent planks when disposed in underlap and overlap relation to each other.
2. The combination of planking, boarding or other wall or ceiling covering having under and overlapped edge portions, edging tongues on said under and overlap portions, fasteners having reversely extending wings and an intermediate straight portion providing seats between the wings for accommodating the edge tongues of other wall or ceiling covering having under and overlapped edge portions, edging tongues on said under and overlap portions, fasteners having reversely extending wings and an intermediate straight portion providing seats between the wings for accommodating the edge tongues of adjacent planks when disposed in underlap and overlap relation to each other, means passed only through the fasteners for securing the same to supports for said planks and having the means and said fasteners concealed by the latter, and a supplemental U fastener engageable with-an end of each plank and concealed by an overlap thereof.
4. The combination of a planking, boarding or other wall or ceiling covering having under and overlapped edge portions, edging tongues on said under and overlap portions and having fastening and expansion grooves, and fasteners having reversely extending wings and an intermediate straight portion providing seats between the wings for accommodating the edge tongues of adjacent planks when disposed in underlap and overlap relation to each other.
5. The combination of planking, boarding or other wall or ceiling covering having under and overlapped 'edge portions, edging tongues on said under and overlap portions and having fastening and expansion grooves, fasteners having reversely extending wings and an intermediate straight portion providing seats between the wingsfor accommodating the edge tongues of adjacent planks when disposed in underlap and overlap relation to each other, and means passed only through the fasteners for securing the same to supports for said planks and having the means and said fasteners concealed by the latter.
6. The combination of planking, boarding or other wall or ceiling covering having under and overlapped edge portions, edging tongues on said under and overlap portions and having fastening andexpansion grooves, fasteners having reversely extending wings and an intermediate straight portion providing seats between the wings for accommodating the edge tongues of adjacent planks when disposed in underlap and overlap relation to each other, means passed only through the fasteners for securing the same to supports for said planks and having the means and said fasteners concealed by the latter, and a supplemental U fastener engageable with an end of each plank and concealed by an overlap thereof.
