Description
July 30, I929. F. G. BROTZ COMBINATION SUPPLY AND OVERFLOW Filed July 11, 1928 ATTORNEY Z WI TNES SE S Patented July 30, 1929.
UNITED s'rrs FFIQEQ FRANK G. BROTZ, OF KOHLER, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR T KOI-ILER COMPANY, OF KOHLER, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
COMBINATION SUPPLY AND OVERFLOW.
Application filed July 11,
This invention has for its object to provide a combination supply and overflow for bathtubs and the like, serving the double purpose of admitting water to the tub and of determining the maximum water level by permitting an overflow to the waste.
, Another object of the invention is to so combine these two instrumentalities as to present aneat appearance and as to be suitable for embodiment in the bathtub wall as an integral part thereof.
Another object of the invention is to locate the discharge openings of the water supply above the water level determined by the overflow whereby a condition of suction occuring in the supply pipe will not cause water to be drawn from the bathtub into such pipes.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a combination supply and overflow for bathtubs and the like with an operating handle for operating a pop-up valve or waste control.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination supply and overflow as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in different views:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a combination supply and overflow for bathtubs constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a central sectional view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the plane of line 33 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings, 10 indicates the wall of a bathtub, preferably of cast iron having a vitreous enameled surface. An overflow conduit 11 is formed integral with the wall 10 and terminates in an overflow opening 12 through said wall with a hood or lip 13 also formed integral with the wall 10 and shielding .or protecting the overflow opening from view. The hood or lip 13 joins with the wall 10 of the tub around the edges of the overflow opening 12 except along the lower edge, which is spaced inwardly from the edge of the overflow opening to form a passageway therebetween through which the water may flow into the overflow conduit 11 to the sewer connection, not shown. Formed integral with the tub wall 10 and the hood or guard 13 and sur- 1928. Serial No. 291,899.
rounding the upper portion of the latter is a larger hood or guard 14 forming a supply bell communicating with a suitably valved supply pipe 15 and discharging into the tub on either side of the .overflow hood 13. The
V supply bell at its upper part has an extension 16 through the wall of the tub to form a continuation of the overflow conduit casting and has the supply pipe 15 connected thereto, the water from said supply pipe being conducted through said extension 16 and then dividing and discharging in sepa rate streams on both sides of the overflow bell 13. The nozzles through which the supply is discharged are some distance above the lower edge of the overflow opening which determines the maximum height of the water level in the tub so that there is no danger of the water rising above the level of such nozzles; Consequently upon the occurrence of a condition of suction within the supply pipes, there is no possi bility of water being drawn therein from the bathtub. Passing through the hood 13 and extending into the waste conduit 11 is an operating handle means 17 for operating a waste control, not shown, but connected therewith by means of a rod 18 passing through the overflow conduit.
The combination supply and overflow of this invention, while constituting an integral part of the wall of the bathtub, as shown, and having many advantages by reason of its embodiment in the tub wall, may be made separate and attached to the tub wall. When integral, however, the enameled surface of the tub may continue over the double hooded projection within the tub, giving a neat and ornamental appearance and assuring durability and freedom from necessity for repairs incident to the use of attached metal parts.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combination supply and overflow for bathtubs comprising a bathtub wall having an overflow opening, an overflow conduit formed integral therewith and surrounding the opening, a hood on the inner side of the v tub wall integral therewith and surrounding bathtubs comprising a bathtub wall having an overflow opening, an overflow conduit integral with the tub wall and surrounding.
the overflow opening, an overflowhood integral with the tub wall and projecting into the tub and surrounding the top and sides of the overflow opening with its lower edge spaced from the lower edge of the tub to form a passageway therebetween a supply bell comprising a hood also integral with the wall of the tub and surrounding the upper partof the overflow hood with discharge openings on opposite sides of the overflow hood, said bell having an extension through the wall of the tub, and a supply pipe connected with such extension.
3. A combination supply and overflow for bathtubs and the like comprising a tub wall having an overflow opening, an overflow conduit integral with the tub wall on the back thereof andsurrounding the overflow opening, an overflow hood projecting within the tub and integral with the tub wall and surrounding the top and sides of the overflow opening, a supply bell comprising a larger hood also integral with the tub wall and surrounding the upper part of the overflow hood and forming nozzles discharging on opposite sides of the overflow hood, an extension of the supply bell passing through the wall of the tub, a valved supply pipe connected therewith, and a waste control handle mounted in the/overflow hood and having an operating connection passing through the overflow conduit.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturefl v I FRANK G, YYBROTZ.
