Description

July 23, 1929. P LOCK 1,722,232
DISPLAY DEVICE Filed March 17, 1928 ATTORNEY I Patented July 23,- 1929.
UNITED ERNEST V. POLLOCK, OF OTT'UMWA, IOWA.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed March 17, 1928.
My invention relates to a device afiording means to display various articles, such as postage stamps, butterflies, and. other articles.
The general object of my invention is to provide a novel device of the indicated character which will afford protection for the exhibited articles and at the same time afford the maximum visibility.
The nature of my invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a face view of a display device embodying my invention, parts being broken out I Figure 2 and Figure 3 are transverse vertical sections on the lines 22 and 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the removable display units, parts being broken out;
Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a cross section of the unit shown in Figure 4- 0 In carrying out my invention in practice in accordance with the illustrated example, a back 10 made of cardboard or the like is provided, and a front border 11. Between the front border 11 and the back 10 I provide a spacing strip 12 of less width than the border 11 so that said border 11 overhangs at the inner side edge on two opposite sides of the device, as at 13, thereby affording undercut spaces or entrant angles at opposite sides of the display device.
Each of a plurality of separate display units 14 has its ends detachably held at the side edges of the display device, and the ends of the side units 1 extend beneath the oppo site overhanging edges 13 and are adapted to be received in the undercut portion presented because of said overhanging edges. These units 14 (see Figures 4 and 6) have a back strip 15 covered at the front by a transparent film or covering 16, said covering being formed of a nonabsorbent material so that postage stamps or the like will not adhere to the surface.
The edge portions 17 of the covering ma- Serial No. 262,385.
'terial 16 are turned to the back surface of stamps, butterflies, or other material flat or approximately fiat may be placed in each unit 14, beneath the transparent covering 18, as indicated conventionally at A in Figure 1. In entering or removing an article to be exhibited, the edge 20 may be grasped with the fingers and clearance afforded for the entrance and placing of the article beneath the material 18 between the same and nonabsorbent frontcovering 16. The units are readily removable by springing them from beneath the overhanging edge portions 13.
It will be observed that with the above described construction the units 1 1 lie within the plane of the front of the display device so as to be protected against contact with other objects. I
I would state furthermore that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In a display device, a display unit comprising a backing strip, a layer of non-absorbent material. on the front face of the backing strip, and a transparent covering overlying the non-absorbent material and having its edges extending to the rear face of the backing strip, one edge being made fast and its other edge free, whereby the free edge may be grasped and turned towards the front of the unit to permit articles to be placed between the covering and the non-absorbent material.
Signed at OttumWa in the county of VVapello and State of Iowa this 12 day of March, A. D. 1928.
ERNEST V. POLLOCK.
