.Zdz'eaar 'I'I'II'II'" W. C. WATTS Dec. 2, 1969 LABEL STRIP Filed July 10, 1968 O O O O O O United States Patent 3,481,460 LABEL STRIP William Carrigan Watts, Southfield, Mich., assignor to Dennison Manufacturing Company, Framingham, Mass., a corporation of Nevada Filed July 10, 1968, Ser. No. 743,836 Int. Cl. B65d 83/00 US. Cl. 20656 8 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A strip comprising a release sheet and labels mounted on the sheet with pressure-sensitive adhesive which peels ofl? the sheet, edges of the labels being wavy to facilitate peeling.
Objects of the invention are to produce a strip of peelable labels which is economical to produce and from which the labels may be easily peeled.
According to this invention the strip comprises a release sheet, a row of labels mounted on the sheet with pressure-sensitive adhesive which peels off the release sheet, the juxtaposed edges of the labels being spaced apart and one of said edges of each label being uneven. Preferably the uneven edges are wavy. In the preferred embodiment a plurality of said rows of labels are mounted on said sheet with spaces between the rows, the sheet is elongate and said rows extend transversely of the sheet, the margins of the sheet extend beyond the ends of said rows and have rows of perforations extending along the margins, and the sheet has weakened lines extending transversely of the sheet between the rows at regular intervals lengthwise of the sheet to facilitate fan folding.
For the purpose of illustration a typical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the strip is made;
FIG. 2 is a similar view showing the preferred method of manufacture;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the finished strip; and
FIG. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
The particular embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration is made with a backing sheet 1 of release material such as glassine paper and a sheet 2 of label material mounted on the release sheet with pressure-sensitive adhesive 3 which readily peels 01f the release sheet. The labels 4 are cut out of the label sheet with a die which cuts through the label sheet without cutting through the backing sheet and the skeleton 5 of the label sheet is then peeled off as illustrated in FIG. 2. The margins of the strip have rows of perforations 6 for use in feeding the strip through a printing machine to print the labels either before or after the aforesaid skeleton is peeled off. At regular recurrent intervals the strip is provided with transverse rows of perforations 7 or other weakened lines to facilitate fan folding.
In use the labels are peeled oif the release sheet and applied to any desired surface. To facilitate this peeling each label is provided with a wavy edge 8 under which a finger nail or sharp instrument may be inserted so that the peeling may be started more easily.
I claim:
1. A label strip comprising a release sheet, a row of labels mounted on the sheet with pressure-sensitive adhesive which peels off the release sheet, the juxtaposed edges of the labels being spaced apart and one of said edges of each label being uneven.
2. A label strip according to claim 1 wherein transverse edges of all the labels are uneven.
3. A label strip according to claim 1 wherein said edges are wavy.
4. A label strip according to claim 2 wherein said .edges are wavy.
5. A label strip according to claim 1 wherein a plurality of said rows of labels are mounted on said sheet with spaces between the rows.
6. A label strip according to claim 5 wherein the sheet is elongate and said rows extend transversely of the sheet.
7. A label strip according to claim 6 wherein the margins of the sheet extend beyond the ends of said rows and have rows of perforations extending along the margins.
8. A label strip according to claim 6 wherein the sheet has weakened lines extending transversely of the sheet between the rows at regular intervals lengthwise of the sheet.
