This invention relates to a draft apparatus for cotton spinning and consists essentially in the provision of three independent sets of drawing rollers arranged so that the slivers from two sets can be received and doubled by the third set of rollers. Condensators are provided whereby the slivers are guided and condensed.

The draft apparatus is provided with three independent sets of drawing rollers two of which deliver their slivers p and p so that they can be fed together to the third set and be doubled by the latter. Each of the first two sets comprises three pairs of drawing rollers 10, 16; 11, 17; 12, 18 and 13, 19; 1'4, 20; 15, 21, respectively, and the third or normal set comprises four pairs of rollers 1, 5; 2, 6; 3, 7; and 4, 8. The first two sets may be arranged either in a common horizontal plane as shown in Fig. 3, or in an inclined position as shown in Fig. 6, or again in a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 7. The rollers of the first two sets are mounted in bearings 22 and 23, and those of the third set in bearings and 41, all the bearings being supported by means of brackets 9 on the machine frame 42. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the rollers of the first two sets are mostly actuated by gravity alone. Only the delivery rollers 18 and 19 are weighted for whichpurpose they support yokes 33 whereon a weight 35 is acting by means of a rod 34. The press rollers of the third set are controlled by an arm 36 which is pivoted at 37 and connected by means of a link 38 to a weighted arm 39.
On leaving the rollers 10 to 21, the slivers consist of loose parallel fibres, and two slivers, one from each set, are joined at 24 and de- 0 livered into the wide end 26 of a condensator 25 in which they are condensed, the resultant composite sliver being guided through the narrow end 27 of the condensator to the feed rollers 4, 8 of the third roller set. A. further condensation of the sliver," after additional stretching, is effected between the roller pairs 2, 6 and 3, 7 by means of the condensator 30. The latter consists of a cup 31 having in its bottom a narrow delivery slit 32 (Fig. 5). In both instances the delivery ends of the condensators are arranged close to the nip of the rollers. The condensators 25 are supported by a shaft 29 about which they can be rocked in a plane at right angles to the roller. The condensators are also capable of being reciprocated in the axial direction of the rollers.
The roller pairs are arranged close together, and while the draft between adjacent rollers is small the total draft effect is considerable. As an example, the draft between the rollers 10 and 11 may be 1.25, and between the rollers 11 and 12 it may be 4. The same draft operates between the rollers 15, 14 and 13. Between the rollers 12 and 4 the draftmay be from 1.1 to 1.2; between the rollers 4 and 3 it may be from 2 to 2.5; and between the rollers 3 and 5 the draft may vary between 6 and 10. 'If the draft are roughly taken as 1.25 X 4 1.1 X 2 X 6, a total draft of 66 is obtained, while, if the draft between the rollers 31 is increased to 10, the total draft will be 110. Considered in respect of yarn numbers, a sliver of the number 0.8 would be increased by the first draft 1.25 to 1, and by the second draft 4 to 4. Two of these slivers are joined to form one of number 2 which is increased by the factor 1.1 to
2.2, by the factor 2 to 4.4, and by the factor 8.2 to 36.08 which will be the number delivered by the roller pair 5.1 to the spinning spindles. To obtain the final number the original number may be multiplied by the total draft and halved thus:
The draft may be varied according to requirements so as to obtain the desired number from any given sliver number.
Since the draft between adjacent roller pairs is small, the slivers can pass through the of slivers obtained from different, independent sets of draft rollsany unevenness produced by the latter will be levelled out, and a very fine and uniform yarn will be obtained. The condensator condenses the slivers into thin thread-like filaments wherein the short fibres are retained for the production of a smooth and uniform yarn.
The ordinarily employed intermediate and roving frame are obviated by the arrangement according to the present invention.
We claim:
A draft apparatus for cotton spinning, comprising three sets ofdrawing rollers arranged so as to allow the slivers from two sets 15 to be fed into and doubled by the third set, the first two sets being arranged so as to feed their slivers together from opposite directions.
