This invention aims to provide an improved linishing welt or binding for concealin# tacks or other fastening devices. zln the accompanying drawings is shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention,

In the particular embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the drawings, the welt comprises a l, body 1l formed froma piece of suitable sheet material which may be of a color to match or to contrast with the upholstering or covering of the article to which the welt is to be applied.

The body 1 of the welt is formed from a piece or strip of material Vof predetermined lengthand width having opposite marginal or edge portions 2 and 3 folded inwardly over the top ofthe main part of the welt body herein numbered 7. Within the folds formed by the folding of said edge portions, llers 4 are inserted which may, for example, be composed of paper cords, although the invention 1s not confined to such material, nor to the particular shape of fillers shown.

The marginal portion 2, at least in the form shown in Fig. 2, is wide enough, when folded over and upon the body portion. 7, to extend nearly across the upper face of said portion 7, terminating just inside of an' edge bead 5 formed by folding the other marginal portion 3 over its filler 4.' The marginal portion 2 may be secured to the upper face' of the por# tion 7 in any appropriate manner, as for example by cement, and as herein shown also byistitches 6 extending longitudinally of the welt in close proximity to the inner side of an edge bead 12 formed along the opposite edge of the welt by the marginal portion 2 and its filler 4.

The portion 3 is treated somewhat differently, from the portion 2 to the extent that following its aforesaid inward folding over its filler cord 4, the free edge 8 isturned under and back toward the folded edge approxi# mately to the filler 4, thereby completely concealing the raw edge 14 ofthe material and u presenting ,to view a neatly finished edge 10 l just inside said edge bead 5. The raw edge 14 of the part 3 terminates approximately in alignment with the free edge 16 of the upper ply of the marginal. portion 2, and' both of these edges terminate approximately at the inner side of the filler cord 4.y

A second strip of material, indicated generally at 18, may be composed of any suit able material and of appropriate color, for example like that forming the body 1 orcontrasting therewith. The material of this stripis folded near its middle at 2O and herein propriately or as h erein shownv 4a convexly shaped filler 26 which latter, together with the covering strip enclosing it, constitutes a. -center bead 28 for the Welt. This pressure is'of material importance in pressing the center flap or bead 28 downwardly against the upper surface of the central portion lof the. welt body between the edge beads 5 and 12, so that after said center bead has been raised and the tacks or fastening devices, shown herein at 38, have been driven through the body portion of the welt and into the material to which the welt is attached, said oen ter bead or fla-p will of itself return to its `normal fastener-concealing position, as clearly indicated inFig. 2.

VAV` finishing welt comprising a. body formed from a piece of. material having opposite edges thereof turned. inwardly and enclosing fillers at thepedges thereof, one of fthe inturned edges extending substantially Aacross the upper face of said bodythe margina] portion ofthe other inturned. edge being folded. under toward andV adjacent its filler and forming a stiffener for said edge, a flap formed from a separate piece of material doubled and having its `edge inserted between the turned under edge of the first mentioned strip and the body portion thereof, and stitches extending through all of the plies of both of said pieces of material and constituting a hinge for said flap, said inturned edges and flap overlapping one ann other and forming moisture shedding portions from the direction of at least one side of the welt.

A finishing welt comprising a. .body formed froma piece of material having opposite edges thereof turned inwardly, one of said inturned edges extending toward the opposite edge of the welt and forming an upper ply for said body, a filler element enclosed 1n vthe folded edge thereof,ia row of stitches yof, the free edges ofsaid pliesbeing inserted between the finished edge portion-.of

said body and the base portion of said. body `and stitches extending through all the plies of said body and said flap along inside of the second mentioned fillerelement and constituting a hinge for said flap, said inturned edges and said two-ply flap being, arranged in overlapping relation one to another to. form moisture and. dust excluding means from the direction of one side of the welt.

A finishing welt comprising a body formedffrom apiece of material havingoppositekmarginal portionsv thereof .turned inwardly, fillers enclosed withinthe folds of weisse said inturned portions and forming beads at opposite edges of said body, means to secure one of the inturned marginal portions to the body by stitches arranged inside of its bead, the free edge of the other inturned portion being turned under to form a finished double thick lip, a second piece of material doubled transversely to form a two-ply flap, a filler arranged between said plies adjacent the folded edge thereof and forming a center bead for the welt, the free edges of said second piece of material being inserted beneath said double thick lip and stitches extending through said double thick lip, throughV the free edges of said flap and through the under 'body of said welt and forming a hinge for said flap, the materials forming said finished edge, said two-ply filled flap and the remaining inturned marginal portions being arranged in overlapping relation one with another to exclude from one direction moisture from between said overlapping elements.

6. A nishing welt comprising a body formed from a piece of material having opposite marginal portions thereof turned `inwardly, fillers enclosed within the folds of said inturned portions and forming beads at opposite edges of said body, the free edge of one of said marginal inturned portions being turned under to form a double thick finishing lip, a second piece of material doubled transversely along one edge to form a twoeply flap, a filler arranged between said plies adjacent said doubled edge and forming avcenter bead for the welt, and stitches extending through the double finishing lip of said inturned marginal portions, through the free edges of said flap and through the under body of said welt and forming a hinge for said flap, said stitches being arranged close to Vthe inner edge of the adjacent edge bead Aand close to the corresponding edge of said center bead whereby the double thick finished lip of said inturned portion will be caused to exert downward pressure upon said center bead to retain the latter in contact with the body of the welt between said edge beads, said doubled nishing edge and said two-ply filled flap' overlapping adjacent portions of the welt to exclude moisture driven against the welt from the direction of one side thereof.

7. A finishing welt comprising a body, an edge bead arranged along the lower edge of said body having a covering extending upwardly against the upper face of said body, a center bead arranged against said covering and secured along its upper side only to the welt body, a second bead arranged along-thc upper edge of said welt body and having a double thick lip overlying the secured edge of said center bead, said center bead and said double thick lip respectively overlapping in the same direction as the hinged edge of said center bead and the upper edge of said upwardly extending covering portion of the body to exclude moisture and dust from the face of the welt. A finishing welt comprising va body, an edge bead arranged along one edge 'of said body, the covering of said edge bead having a part turned back over the top of said body, a center bead overlying the turned back edge of said edge bead and hingedly I secured to said body along the edge of theV center bead rembte from said edge bead, the
