Description

` E. W. BRIGGS. "CHIMNEY-HOLDER.
Patented Jan. 11, 1876.
NV PETERS, PHOTOALITHOGRAPHE UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIcE EDWARD W. BRIGGS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WALTER D. DESPARD, OF SAME PLACE. A
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEV-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,078, dated January 1l, 1876; application filed December 23, 1875.'
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, E, W. BRIGGs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Holder for Chimneys and Globes, of which the following is the specilication:
The subject of my invention is a holder t'or the chimneys or globes ot lamp or gas burn ers, constructedas described hereafter, to retain chimneys or globes ot different sizes, and to admit air to the chimneys or globes in proportion to the sizes ot' the saine.V Y
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, ot' the improved holder applied to the burner of a coaloil lamp; Ifig. 2, a `plan view; Fig. 3, a detached plan view of' the operating-disk; Fig. 4, an elevation of one of the retainers; and
Fig. 5, a modification, showing the construction employed for retaining the globes of gasburners. .Y
The device consists ot two iiat disks, A D, and retainers O, the latter disk' being undermost, and slightly larger in diameter than the disk A. In the disk-1A area series ot' `openings, e, and three radial slots, t', each ot' which guides a retainer, O, consisting ot' a slide, d, iitted to the slot, provided with two upright -fleXible fingers, and having at the under side a pin, n, which extends through one of the three spiral slots sin the disk `or plate D. The plate D is supported .closely against the plate A by washers m, riveted to the pins a ot' the retainersG, and openings e are made `in the plate, for a purposedescribed hereafter. Each plate has a central opening, that in the upper plate being the smallest, so that the plate A may be secured permanently to, or retained temporarily in `frictional contact with, thedome o'r burner of a lamp or gasxture, the lower plate being at liberty to revolve freely.
On`.turning the plate D the sides of the `spi,- ral slots s, acting on the pins n of the slides, will move the latter in the slots i to or from the dome or burner, according to the direc tion in which the plate is turned, until they occupy the proper position to receive the ilange of a globe, or the lower edge of the chimney, which is clamped between the ilexible lingers.
-lt will be seen that the slotted plate D serves to adjust the 'retainers in both direc-` tions, while the retainers G, clasping the chimney on both sides, cannot be displaced, and lock the plate D and each other in their positions after adjustment. It will also be seen that while the slides are thus secured by the plate, the lingers, being elastic, will yield to accommodate themselves to any expansion or contraction of the chimney or globe.
Increased stability is imparted to the slides by causing them to 'support and Vbear lthe y weight of the plate D.
The openings c e in the plates A and D are relatively so arranged that when the retainers are at the limit of their outward motion all the openings will coincide, while, as the retainers are retracted, the openin gs are gradually contracted, thus proportioning the ad-f mission of air to the dimensions of the chimney or globe.
I claim as my inventionl. The globe and chimney attachment for fburners, consisting ot' plates A D, having radialand spiral slots, to which are adapted slides or retainers, substantially as set forth.
2. 'lliecombination of the plate A, its slots t t, the plate D, its spiral slots s, and retainers O, adapted to both slots, and provided with iiexible fingers, as and for the purposes specitied.
3. The combination of the plate A,\its slots t', the retainers C, and the slotted plate D, supported in contact with the plate A by said retainers, as described.
4. The slotted plates A D, combined with the retainers G, and provided with openings e e', relatively arranged, as and for the purposes set forth. l
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
