Application led time 15441925. Serial No. 37,320.
This invention relates to niops.
Ohjects ot this invention are to provide a detachable niop in which a body portion is provided for the reception ot the prongs troni the mop.y and in 'which the mop prongs are not weakened adjacent their points of engageinent with the attaufluueut. hut are lett intact for a material distance troni the niop itself and are lot-hed adjacent their extreme end, thus maintaining the integrity ot' the prongs and the strength thereof.
Further ohjccts are to provide means 1or quicklyY detaehinp1 the nlop troni the holder which may he Worked h'v nieans of a nut, and which positive in its action and prevents iiuulvertent loosening ot the mop.
Au euihodixneut ot the invention is shown in the accoxupanyinel drawings, in which Figurey l is a view ot' the mop in position on the attachment with parts in section.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal. sectional vieu' at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail partlyY in section of the upper end ot the prongs.
Figure l is a transverse sectional vieu' on the line l--l ot Figure l.
The niop comprises a plurality of strands l which are folded over a transversely cX- tendine' bottoni har 2. and a correspoiulinp,v upper har 3. The 'folded portion of the strands is enclosed hy ineans of a fabric sheath i uliieh secured on opposite sides ot the liars liv means ot lines ot' stitching. as shown most elearlbv in Figures l and The hars "l have their terminals turned outwardlyT at righty angles to form the attaching' prongs 5. The eXtreine ends of these attaching' prongs are secured together h v means ol a rivet G, as shown in Figure il. An ai'ierture 7 is formed adjacent the ends ot the prongs.
The holly portion comprises a shank 8 which is apertured. as shown in Figures 2 and Ll, to receive the prongs and to snugly hold the prongs in sliding engagement. lt is to he noted that this apertnred shank 8 is elongated and houses substantially the entire vlength of the pron 11's, thus .securingI a very lirin attachment between the prongs and the hotly portion.
The shank is provided with external threads l) upon which a rino' nut l0 is screwed, as shown most clearlyv in Figures l and 2.
Further, it is to he noted that a channel 11 is formed in one side of the shank and houses a small rocker har 1'2 which is provided with an upturned lower end 13. The upper end ot the rocking har l2 is provided with a.
lor-knipr finger adapted to enter the aperture 7. I
lt is to he noted that when the nut is screwed into its uppermost position` that the locking linger 14 is held vin position within the aperture 'i against inadvertent detachnient. When the nut l() is seuv veel dou'nivardlv it engages the outwardly turned end 1B ot the har l2. and it rocks the linger 'l-l out of engagement with the aperture 7V, thus rcleaf-iingi1 the prongs 5 troni locking' engage` ment and permitting;` the Withdrawal of the prongs troni the hotly portion.
lt is to he noted that the upper end oll the hotly portion is provided with a slightlyY eonieal aperture l5 adapted to receive the conical portion ,1G ot the handle li'. A screw i8 eX- tends into the handle and is conntersunk in the upper end of the body portion, as shown niost clearly in Figure 2, thus temporarily locking: the shank to the handle.
lt is to he noted particularlyY that the aperture 7 in the prongs 5 is located adiaeent their eXtreme upper ends.y and that the shank S engages the prongs throughout substantiall)Y their entire xtent. This avoids the usual detects so eonunon in mops ot having the prongs weakened at their points ot engagement With the hodlfiI portion.
lt will he seen that a niop has heen provided in which a i'ahric sheath whollyv eucloses the metallic parts ot the mop and provides au upper relatively hcavv portion wllieh may he used for scrubbing it desired. Further, this tahric sheath prevents dani-age to the oor hoard er toot hoard or furniture in a room when the mop is used.
lt will he noted further that the niop nur v he vez-'v quickly and readily detached trom the hodv portion by unscreiving the nut l0.
lt will he seen. theretore` that a detachable :nop has been provided whieh is ot' extremely rugged and substantial Construction. and in which the parts may he most easily operated..
Although the invention has heen described in considerahle detail, it is to he understood that the invention nia)v hey variously embodied and is, theretore.y to he limited only as Claimed.
l claim:
ln a inop, the combination of a mop head having a. projecting' tongue provided with a transverse aperture and a mop head holder having a shank provided with a longitudinal aperture adapted to receive said tongue, said an externally located slot, a rocking bar With-n in said slot and having an outwardly pro- ]ecting cam portion, and a finger carried by said bar and adapted to be projected through 10 said transverse apertures to lock said tongue Within :said shank, said rocking berbeing straight throughout its major portion, the straight portion of said bar being normally located below the threads throughout the entire length 0f the Straight portion.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand ut Milwaukee, in the County Vof Milwaukee and State of Tisconsin.
