UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE I. OWN, OF DA Y'ION, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE DAYTON PAPER NOVELTY COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION 01 OHIO. I
TERRACE DISPLAY MEANS FOR PAPER BOXES.
Application filed August 29, 1927. Serial no. 218,010.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in terrace display means for paper boxes.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide for an independent set-up or for the inclusion in a box containing merchandise, a collapsed blank which may be easily folded to a position for insertion in the box above the articles therein to provide a terraced support for the display of some of them.
It is also an object of my invention to provide on the blank, an extension above its terraced portion to display legends concerning the articles which the box contains.
Other important and incidental obj ect-s will be brought out in the following specification and particularly set forth in the subjoined claims. I
In the accompanying drawings illustrating 2 my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which my terraced display insert is made. Figure 2 is an exterior View of one side of the blank after being assembled in its terraced form. Figure 3 is a sectional view taken through the assembled blank. Figure 4 is a perspective view of the assembled blank. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the assembled terrace unit within a box, showing in dotted linesa bar of. candy resting upon one of its ledge portions. Figure 6 is a plan view of a portion of a blank formed in a different manner to provide the terraced insert. Figure 7 is a sectional view taken through the assembled blank. Figure 8 is an external view of one side of the same. And Figure 9 is a view of said blank side before the terraced topis secured thereto, showing the pointed supporting sections on the flap.
Referring to the accompanying drawings to for a detailed description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a blank which may be made of paper or metal. This blank in Figure 1 comprises a middle section formed a short distance above its bottom with a horizontal crease line 2. Parallel with the latter line, and a short distance above it, is a second crease line 3. A space of a narrow width is defined between the latter line and v a third crease line 4 above it.
The portion of the blank between the crease lines 2 and 3 terminates beyond the middle section of the blank in ears 5 and 6 thathave reduced slot entering ends 7. This blank blank as shown inv Figure 4. At its top the blank terminates in a wide panel ortion 11 carrying side ears 12 that are ormed as shown in Figure 1. This panel 11 is oblique to the top horizontal part 8 to receive a legend such as that shown in Figure 5, describing the article displayed.
Projecting outwardly from the bottom vertical crease lines 13 and 14 are side wing portions 15. Above an inclined crease line '16 each side wingportion is formed with a flap 17 from whose inner end the lower ear of the middle portion of the blank has been severed. A V notch 18 is between the outer end of each fla-p 17 and the upper outer corner of its side wing 15. s
Within each wing portion 15 there is a series of inclined slots 19 that ma project a slight distance into the flap part 1;. In folding the blank the flaps 17 are bent inwardly while the side wings 15 to which they are attached are turned to ositions at right angles to that part of the b ank which is below the crease llne 2. (See Figure 4). The middle portion of the blank is then folded to bring its parts 8 to horizontal positions and its parts 10- to vertical positions, after which the ears 5 and 6 are tucked in the slots 19 that are reinforced by the side flaps 17. The side wings 15 contain in their upper, outer corner por- 95 tions slots 20 to receive the ears 12 on the panel parts 11 of the blank. With its parts thus firmly connected together, the folded I blank without I blank.
blank is shown in Figure 4 as a terraced-display-support for some of the articles ofmerchandise contained in the box 21 illustrated in Figure 5. Adapted to be contained in its dissembled state in this box, it is inserted therein in set-up position over the articles of merchandise which it contains, to support upon its horizontal terraced portions 8 some 0 said articles without interferring with the removal of the remaining .ones from the rear end of the box.
In Figure 6-1 have shown one -side of a blank 1 whose side wing rtions 15 are formed with different top aps' than those shown in Figure 1.. Each top flap, which is designated by the numeral 23, is divlded from its side wing by V slots 24. Accordingly, when the flap 23 is bent againstthe inner surface of its side wing 15, as shown in Figure 9, the tongue portions 25 left when the slots 24 are formed will project vide side supports for the horizontal terraced parts 8 whose ears 5 and6 are received by the V slots 24.
In many different ways these side wing flaps and slots ma be formed to firmly receive the ears on t e terraced portion of the departing from the scope of the invention, the essence of which is to provide a firm, attractive and economically made terraced display-support for articles of merchandise in a paper box without interferring withthe removal of the remaining articles therefrom. The top flaps'which the wings carry reinforce the slots in the latter, said slots bein engaged at their upper and lower ends by the ears on the terraced part of the I do not wish to be limited to'the details of construction and arrangement herein shown and described, and any changes or modificacations ma be made therein within the scope of the SllbjOlIlBd claims. 7
