UNITED STATES ALEXANDER G. KANELOS, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application led August 1, 1927. Serial No. 209,855.
My invention relates more particularly to a device of this character which is especially adapted for use in displaying candy and similar articles. One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a device of thisI character wherein a-container is simulated so that when candy or the like is used in connection with the device, it will present the appearance of a container filled with the articles displayed, but in reality only a single layer will be arranged in the container.
Another object of my invention is the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, efiicient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. 1 is a play device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3*?, of Fig. 1.
lVhile I have shown and described my iinproved display device as in the form of a basket'with the body of the basket constructed of Woven reed, it will be apparent that this frame or body of the device may be made of any material desirable for the purpose. In the main embodiment of my invention, I provide a base member 1, from which the body of the basket is built up. The frame or body in the present instance is constructed of woven reed built up directly from the base 1 and attached to the base adjacent its edges.
In the construction of a basket of woven reed of this type, the construction usually includes a plurality of vertically deposited reeds which in the present instance are indicated at 2. These reeds 2 in the construction of my device have their lower ends fitted into suitable openings 3 formed in the base adjacent its loyver edges. These vertical portions 2 of the frame may be secured within the openings 3 in the base in any suitable manner. The longitudinal strands 4 of the reed are then interwoven in the ordinary manner with the vertical portions 2 to form a frame or body portion 5 of the device.
After theframe has been woven to the deplan view of my improved dissired heiglet, a supporting platform 6 is arranged within the upper edges of the frame 5 and this platform is preferably supported upon the end pieces 7 arranged within the frame at the ends of the base.
ln order to eliminate any vacant appearance of the played on the platform be of such nature that they should not be arranged close enough together' to entirely cover the platform, this platform will present the appearance of a division member or separator between what might appear to be several layers of the articles displayed in the basket. In-order to properly retain the platform in position'and present a neat finishedV appearance to the device, a substantial tight Woven edge 9 is attached to the upper edge of the frame 5 and this edge 9 is of such width that the same will slightly overlie the edges of the platform as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.
Although various types of handles may be provided for my improved device I prefer to provide U shaped handles l() which are in the form of heavy reeds, the ends of Which are interwoven with the edge 9 and the ends of the frame 5 with their extremities fitting within suitable openings in the base l Where they are securely held against movement. The handle member 10 may also be secured against movement by having fine brads or the like extended through the frame, through the side portions of the handles and embedded in the ends of the platform 6.
It is avvell-known fact that the majority of candy. manufacturers use a paper transfer sheet generally 12 X 18 in size Which is placed upon aboard of substantially the same size and the dipped candies are then placed upon this sheet. It will be apparent that by using a transfer sheet of this character, the dipped candies may be placed upon the sheet directly after dipping 'and the sheet and candies then usually transferred to any desired place. dipped candies may be readily transferred to a drying place by merely sliding the sheet from'the board and it is, therefore, one of the objects in my invention to provide a device of this character of thesame size as is used by the candy manufacturers, so that an entire sheet of finishedv candy can be readily transferred to the platform 6 and the fresh dipped candy used for display purposes as heretofore set forth.
While I have specically set forth the fact With the use of such sheets the.
device, should the'articles disthat itis preferred to build up the frame 5 from the base member 1,' the frame may be formed separate with the vertical reeds 2, having their ends extended beyond one edge of the frame so that these ends may be quickly and readily fitted into the openings 3 in the base. With the above construction it will be apparent that the edge 9 could be finished off and the platform 6 with its separating member 7 placed in the frame prior to securing the frame to the base.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same Without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement Iand combmation of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described and in combination, a base, a frame of interwoven reed built up from the base, a platform in the frame adjacent its upper edge, a pair of uprights supporting said platform adjacent its ends, and a reed edge Woven on the upper edge of the frame to overlie the edges of the platform.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
ALEXANDER G. KANELOS.
