Description

July 9, 1929. J. H. COCHRAN CONTAINER FOR GRANULAR MATERIAL Filed Aug. 11, 1927 h m M m art vented attoumq Patented July 9, 1929.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CONTAINER FOR GRAN'ULAR MATERIAL.
Application filed August 11, 1927. Serial No. 212,246.
My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in contalners for granlar material and is. designed more particularly to" provide a receptacle which is adapted to be used both as a container and dispenser for chicken feed. My device comprises a carton which can be prepared for packing the feed, and which can be so modified as to constitute a feeding device to dispense the feed to the chickens. The particularly novel and useful features of my device are the means by which I provide a seal for the carton when it is to be used as a container, and the means by which the carton is modified to render it a dispensing device.
While I have illustrated in the drawings filed herewith and hereinafter fully described one specific embodiment of my invention, I do not consider it limited to said embodiment but refer for its scope to the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a side elevation of my device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The embodiment of my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a closed carton 1 provided upon its opposite walls 2 with slits 3 forming movable flaps 41. In the walls 5, I provide suitably disposed holes 6 through which may be received the rods 7 having bent-over end portions 7. I provide a suitably attached cover sheet 8 to close the slits 3 and holes 6, and provide this sheet 8 with a tear cord 9.
From the foregoing description of the structure of my device, its use will appear obvious. When the container is prepared as illustrated on the right side of Fig. 1, it will be seen that the material in the container is protected against discharge by the sealing sheet 8 which closes both the slits 3 and holes 6. This sheet 8 may be torn by the cord 9, as shown at the left side of Fig. 1, and the flaps 4: are then forced inwardly, and the rods 7 placed through the holes 6 so as to hold the flaps 4, as shown at the left side of Fig. 2. It is to be noted that the bent over portions 7 a of the rods 7 may be received under the sheet 8, as illustrated at the right side of Figs. 1 and 3, thus retaining the rods 1n place in the container, until they are neededto hold open the flaps 4.
Hav ng described my invention, what I claim 1s:
1. A carton having two swinging flaps and rodsrecelved 1n the sides of the carton and so disposed as to hold the fiapsin such relation to each other as to form a chute.
2. In a container, the combination of a lunged member formed from a portion of one wall of the container and arod removably received through the walls of the contamer and so disposed as to retain the hinged member in open position.
3. In a container, the combination of a hinged member formed from a portion of one wall of the container; a rod removably reeelved through the walls of the container and so disposed as to retain the hinged member 1n open position; and a cover element adapted to connect the outer edges of the hinged member with the adjacent edges of the wall of the container, when the hinged member is in closed position.
4. In a container, the combination of a hinged member formed from a portion of one wall of the container; a cover element adapted to connect the outer edges of the hinged member with the adjacent edges of the wall of the container, when the hinged member is in closed position; means for severing the connection afforded by the cover element; and a rod removably received through the walls of the container and so disposed as to retain the hinged member in open position.
5. In a container, the combination of a hinged member formed from a portion of the wall of the container; a cover element eonneeting the outer edges of the hinged menu her with the adjacent edges of the wall of the container; and a rod adapted to be inserted through one wall of the container, be received within the container, and have a portion thereof retained against the outer face of the container by the cover element, and also adapted to be received through two walls of the container and so disposed as to retain the hinged member in open position when the cover element is removed.
(3. A carton having two swinging flaps and 5 holding means in the sides of the carton and so disposed as to hold the flepsin such relal ion to each other as to form a chute.
7. In a container, the combination of a hinged member formed from a portion of the container; and retaining means removably 10 received through the walls of the container and so disposed as to retain the hinged mem- 1 her in open position.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
' JOSEPH HANEY COCHRAN.
