PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS SQUIRE HALLETT, OF BEVERLY, ALBERTA, CANADA.
AU GER.
Application filed May 24, -1926. Serial No. 111,450.
This invention relates to auger bits and more particularly to a head carrying the cutters by means of which an opening is formed when the bit is in use.
One object of the invention is to so form the bit and head that the head may be securely connected with the bit but removed and a new one substituted when necessary.
Another object of the invention is to provide the head with cutting disks so mounted that they may rotate'while an opening is being drilled and to also permit the cutting disks to be readily removed and others substituted if the cutters already in place become dulled or it is desired to substitute larger or smaller cutters.
Another object of the invention is to provide a head consisting of duplicate parts which may be formed from stamped sheet metal and therefore cheaply produced.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing a portion of an auger bit with the improved head associated therewith; v
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a view showing the bit and head in end elevation.
The auger bit a fragment of which is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and indicated in general by the numeral 1, is of a conventional construction except that its outer end portion instead of being provided with permanent cutters has been formed with an extension 2 which is rectangular in end elevation and preferably oblong. Openings are formed in the end extension so that bolts or other removable fasteners 3 may be passed through the end extension to firmly secure the head when their nuts 4 are tightened. These bolts may be easily removed if for any reason it is desired to substitute a new head for the one already in use.
The bit head is formed of duplicate parts or sections which may be termed brackets. Each bracket is provided with a flat body portion 5 of a width corresponding to the bit extension 2 and intermediate its sides is formed with openings 6 to receive the fasteners 3. An arm 7 extends outwardly from thehody portion of each bracket and the arms are of such width that their inner side edges will extend in close proximity to each other when they are bent at their inner ends to extend in crossed relation to each other, as shown in F ig. 2. After being bent at their inner ends, they are rebent intermediate their ends so that their outer end portions converge towards their free ends but do not cross. Threaded openings are provided in the outer ends of the arms in order to receive the threaded shanks of the fast-- ener screws 8, by means of which the cutting disks 9 are rotatably connected with the arms. The cutting discs are of a concavoconvex formation and substantially conical in shape and secured against the inner faces of the arms with their concaved faces presented inwardly. The disks project from the outer ends and side edges of the arms in overlapped and crossed relation to each other and it will be readily understood that when the bit is in use an opening will be drilled having a diameter corresponding to the distance between the outer peripheral edge portions of the two disks. In the present illustration this distance is slightly more than the greatest diameter of the threaded bit, as shown in Fig. 1, but it will be understood that larger or smaller disks may be employed and in fact a number of disks of various sizes may be supplied with the im proved bit and disks of an appropriate size connected with the arms in order to form an opening of the desired diameter. By having the disks secured through the medium of screws they may be readily removed when it is necessary to sharpen them or it is desired to substitute other disks in place of those already in use.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
An attachment for a bit having an extended outer end formed with opposed flat faces, said attachment comprising duplicate brackets each including a body portion and an arm extending from the outer end thereof, said brackets having their body portions adapted to be secured against the opposed in converging relation to each other, and cutting disks rotatably mounted against the inner side faces of the outer end portions of said arms and extending therefrom in overlapping and crossed relation to each other,
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature,
THOMAS SQUIRE HALLETT. [L. s]
