This invention relates to portable hammock or swing crib frames.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved frame of the character described which is light, portable, and collapsible so that it can be carried about with ease, and is readily foldable into a compact form for shipment or storage.
A further object of the invention is to provide an in'iproved'frame of the character de scribed which includes a fitting for collapsibly connecting legs thereto, said fitting permitting a positive means for securing the legs in position to form a rigid structure of the frame. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a frame of the character described comprising few and simple parts which is inexpensive to manufacture, easily set up or collapsed and practical and cfficient to a high degree. 1
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in parthereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a frame embodying the invention set up ready for use;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed view, partly in section, showing the corner construction for the frame;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 33 in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view showing the frame col lapsed; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the corner connecting fitting to which the legs and cross bar are attached.
Referring in detail to the drawing. a frame embodying the invention shown in Fig. 1 is seen to include a cross bar 11 having secured at the ends thereof a connecting fitting12 and a pair of outspreading legs 13 fastened to each of said fittings 12. As shown, the crossbar 1.1 is received upon the beveled end portions of legs 13 in such manner as to be supported thereon.
The cross bar 11 and legs 13 may be made of any suitablelight weight material, as for example wood or metallic tubing and the litting may be formed of cast metal such as malleabl'e iron, or preferably of stamped sheet metal. 4 Each fitting 12 may have a horizontal anchorportion 12 which is adapted to lit into a longitudinal recess 11" provided in the end of the cross bar 11, the ends of the cross-bar being rigidly secured in place by pin rivets 14: passing through the cross-bar and the fitting 12, as shown in Fig. 2.
Diverging downwardly and outwardly fromeachsideof the portion 12 ofthe fitting 12 are side portions; 12 to which the upper ends ofthe legs13 are pivotally secured. To this end, each leg 13 is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 13 in the end of the upper end thereof adapted to receive the side portion 12 of the fitting 12, and the side portion 12 is provided with elongated slots 12 to receive rivets 15 which pass through the end of the leg 18 and said slots 12 so as to permit limited movement of the legs 13 relative to the fitting 12.
An open slot 12 is provided adjacent the lower edge of each side portion 12 of the fitting below the slots 12 and a pin rivet 16 is secured in each of the legs below the pin rivet 15 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. hen the frame is in set up position, ready for use, as shown in Fig. 1, the rivets 15 and 16 abut against the upper end of their respective slots 12 and 12 being maintained in that position by the upward reaction of the ground or other support on which the frame stands and the structure as a whole is rigid and self-sustainmg.
In collapsing the frame from its set up position shown in Fig. 1, each of the legs 13 is simply moved downwardly with respect to its fitting 12 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 until the pin rivet 16 olears the open slot 12, when the legs may be swung inwardly and upwardly from their normal outspread position into their collapsed position extending substantially parallel to the cross bar 11 to form a compact portable unit as shown in Fig.4.
In setting up the frame, the operation is reversed, the legs being first swung downwardly and then moved upwardly until the rivets 16 register in their respective open slots 12 If desired, the outer edge portion of the fitting 12 may be bent to form a flange 12 to stiffen the fitting. As is clearly shown in Fig. 2, said flange 1E2 acts as ,an'end wall or stop for the cross bar 11. Said flange is also constructed to abut the end of cross-bar 11 in such manner as to providea positive positioning means for said fitting with respect'to said bar, at the same time, together with the pivots 14 received through said bar and portion 12, acting as a positive brace for said bar.
Forsuspending a crib or hammock (not shown) from the frame, suitable hook members 17 are secured to the ends of the cross bar 11, preferably so as to pass through the fitting portion 12 as shown in Fig. 2.
The frame 10 constructedwith a'pivoted connection for the legs as described aboveand set up as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, obviously forms a relatively rigid structure which is simple, light, strong and durable and requiresnocross bracing since the legs by their connection to the fitting 12 are positively secured when in place against displacement.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a devicein which the several objects of this invention areachieved, and which is well made of the above invention. and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In combination, a support bar, strut members contacting said bar for supporting the same, means for associating said bar for pivotal or fixed relation to said members aid means comprising a fitting having diverg portions connected by a flat intermediate element, said bar and members being provided with recesses for receiving said element and portions.
