Then, in the alternate spaces be tween the hook-plates d d, this ridge 0 is filed or cut away, as shown, to allow the other alternate needles to Work freely, and take stitches as they pass the wheel. Thus a simple and very accurate and perfectly uniform set of projections is produced.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. ABEL, OF BRISTOL, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING LOOP-WHEELS FOR KNITTING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,908, dated January 11, 1876; application filed June 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ABEL, of Bristol, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improve ment in the Construction of Knitting-Machine Attach ments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification Figure 1 being an axial section of the improved attachment; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in both figures.
My improvement consists in an improved construction of the loop-wheels of circular-knitting machines for closing the barbs of the alternate needles, so that they shall not take stitches when passing the loop-wheel in knitting with two threads of different colors, two ofthese loop-wheels'pne for each color oft-h read, acting, respectively, on the alternate needles. The usual construction of the wheels to effect this purpose consists in filling out the alternate needle-spaces in the wheel sufficiently to close the barbs of the alternate needles entering therein. The main difiiculty lies in producing a uniform filling in the several alternate spaces, and by simple and cheap means. By my construction this is effected in a very perfect and simple manner, as follows:
a lathe, the part first is formed with a ridge or bead, 0, turned accurately, and with uniform projection for the needle-barbs to press against. Then, in the alternate spaces be tween the hook-plates d d, this ridge 0 is filed or cut away, as shown, to allow the other alternate needles to Work freely, and take stitches as they pass the wheel. Thus a simple and very accurate and perfectly uniform set of projections is produced.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improvement in the method of constructing the loop-wheels for circular-knitting machines herein described, consisting in first turning a peripheral ridge or projecting head, 0, thereon, and then cutting or filing away the same in the alternate spaces between the hookplates, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
Specification signed by me this 2d day of October, 1874.
