(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN P. MILLER, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings,- and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Sewing-lilachines; and I do hereby declare that the following specification', when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is such a full, clear, and exact description thereof as will enable others skilledin the art to make and use my improvement.
In said drawings, Figure 1 represents atop view of a sewing-machine cloth-plate. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section ot' a sewing-machine cloth-plate.
This invention consists in constructing a sewing-machine cloth-plate with a groove or grooves formed in the top surface and lying parallel with the line of feed, whereby the cloth may be fed in a straight line by simply pressing it with the fingers into the grooves and causing it to slide therein. No change is proposed in the manner or process of manufacture of the plate from the usual method, except in constructing the grooves b b, and they may be formed in the same dies and at the same time that the edges of the plate 0c are molded. The grooves are made preferably circular in form, about one-tenth of an inch deep and about three-eighths of an inch wide, and finished the same as the plate.
The operation of this improved device is as follows: Place the cloth to be sewed on the plate, press it into the grooves lightly with the fingers, and move it forward uniformly with the feed of the machine. Step thefingers backward on the work as fast as the sewing
