Description

Jiihe 25,! 929. w. A. M LEAN ATTACHMENT FOR METAL VISES Filed Oct. 6, 1928 Patented June 35, 1929.
unirao STATES rAr-snr OFFICE.
WILLIAM ALEXANDER MCLIEAN, OF PINE GROVE, ONTARIU, CAN.B.DA.
ATTACHMENT FOB, METAL WISES.
Application fi1ed October 6, 1928.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments tor metal. Vises, and the object of the invention is to provide a supplemental jaw member forming a Facing tor each IHQIIL ber of the metal vise, which will be readily attachable to the opposing faces of the vise so as to prevent the n'rarring of easily inj ured substances, such as wood or sott metal, an d. it consists essentially oi the arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more jmrticularly explained.
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of a. metal jaw showing my facing attaclnnent applied thereto.
Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective details of the lllGIfllNlS ot the attachment removed from the vise.
l ig. lis a plan view showing the attachments in position upon a vise jaw.
lln the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1. :indi rates the stationary member of a vise and 2- the movable member provided with the usual opposing taces 11 andv 2". 3 and. 4 are tacing members which are prel crably"formed of wood and lit against the opposing tacos ot the jaw members and. provid d with rib portions 3* and 4t fitting beneath the grippingportions of the jaw. 5 and 6 are slide bars slidably secured in. guides Y and 8 secured to the back face of each member 3 and l.
The outer ends of the members 5 and 6 are out-turned at 5* and (3* so as to grip the outer faces of the jaws when the bar n10111 bers 5 and 6 are drawn together.
The cci'ltral portions of the members 3 and 4 are recessed as indicated at 3 into which recess the inner ends of the members 5 and 6 extend. such mei'nbers being provided with threaded portions 5" and (5" engaged by a turn laickle 9 fitting within the recess 3.
The turn buckle is provided with suitable peripheral pertorations 9 into which any suitable instrument may be inserted for turning the turn buckle, and thereby carry the interned portions 5* and (3 into and out oil gripping position with the opposing tacos of the jaws.
10 is a il-member connected by a divided stein formed by members 11 and 12 conneet-' Serial No. 310,821.
The cross bars '15 are also divided as indicated in llig. 4-. and connected centrally by a turn buckle 16 located in the recess 4t? gtormed centrally 0t each-oi? the members 3 and 4..
By this means thc link oil? the U-men'ibor 10 n ay be adjusted to suit the length ot the body oi. the st tionary jaw member 1. In order to adjust the member to the width oi. such. body the base oi the M is divided as indicated at 10* and 10, the divided portions being held in straps 1.7 and 18, the side portions of the M being connected together by a. cross inen'lber comprising members 19 and 20 connected together by a turn. buckle 21. By this means the width of the tl-member may be adjusted. and at the same time the sides of the body 1 ogri 'iped by the dependingportions 19*. i
The member at is provided with a similarly constructed ill-member with the exception that the divided side portions connected. by a turn buckle are connected together at their rear ends by a bolt 22 on which is supported a roller 23 which is adaptedv to engage or pass over the rib 24; forming part of the movablejaw 2 so to securely hold the member l; in place. lfhe bolt 22 is a divided bolt the members of which are connected by a turn buckle secured to the roller by a pin 22 so that by turning the roller the turn buckle is turned to make the required adjustment.
Each member 5:5 and 4 is provided with a supplemental gripping member 525 made oi. soft metal which may be rcmovahly set in position against the upper portion ol the face of each member 3 and t by being linked to the plate 26 secured to the bark o'li each member 3 and 4; and connectedv by an inter-- posed link 27' hiugedly secured to the upper edge of the plate 26 and to the upper edge of the gripping members 25.
When it is desired to grip a soft piece oi. wood sucl as furniture the gripping members 25 are swung back into the dotted position indicated in. Fig. 2 so as to leave the :laecs 3 and 4 clear for engaging the article to be gripped.
When a soft metal part is desired to be gripped the gripping members 25 may be swung into the engaging position indicated in the drawing.
From this description, it will be seen that I have devised a very simple device which is readily applicable to the jaw member of any metal vise and which Will prevent the injury to articles gripped by the rise when they are made of easily injurable material.
What I claim as my invention is 7 1. The combination with the opposing jaw members of a metal vise, of a face member adapted to be applied to each opposing face of the vise, a divided slide bar carried on the rear face of each member provided with out-turned gripping portions adapted to engage each side of thejaw, and a turn buckle threaded on the opposing inner ends of the gripping members for drawing them into the engaged position.
2. The combination with the opposing jaws of a metal vise, of a facing member detachably secured. to each opposing face of the vise, a plate of soft metal extending across the upper portion of such facing member, and a hinged link connection between the upper edge of the soft metal plate and the back of the facing member.
8. The combination with a jaw member of a metal vise, of a face member adapted to be applied to the face of the jaw member, a divided slide bar carried on the rear face of the face member provided with outturned gripping portions adapted to engage each side of the jaw, and threaded means located between the inner ends of the gripping members for drawing them together into engaged position.
