VALVE-SPRING COMPRESSGR.
Application filed September 19, 1927. Seria] No. 220,515.
lt/ly ii'wcntion has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly ellicient valve sprin compressor'. While the improved tool is well adapted tor use in the removal and replacement olf the spring` ot a valve, such as the puppet valve of au internal Cornhustion engine, it is especially Well adapted 'lor use in. the replacement ot such a spring in inaccessible places such as hack of a skirt or other extension or obstruction on a cylinder block.
lo the alcove end, generally stated, the inventi on consists oit the novel devices and coin` hinations oil? devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims..
ln the accompanying drawings, which il,- lnstrate the invention7 like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

llig. 5 is a bottoni plan view ol the long jaw ot the tool.; and
Fig. `6 is a perspective View of the grapple removed 'l1-oni the tool.
Uil: the parte ol? the Ford automobile engine illustrated, it is important to note thc hloclr "i, cylinder Wall 8, intake chamber 9, crank case l0, spring` chamber 1l., skirt l2 at the outer face ol the chamber ll. to Which a cover plate, not shovvn7 is applied, upper and lower aniallyaligned bosses 13 and 14.', respectively, in, the spring charnher llyvalve 15 and its stein 16 Working through the boss 13, tappet 17 and its stein 18 Working through the hose lll ivi th its upper end arranged to engage the lower end oil? a valve `stein 16, cam 19 in the crank :ase l0 `for operating the tappet 17, and a. valve spring` 20 encircling` the valve stein 16 and the boss 18 andcoinlnessed hetween the top oit the spring chamber ll and a Washer 21 applied to the valve stein l() and held in place by a pin 22.
The improved spring` compressor is in the :form of a pair of tongs comprising a pair ot crossed levers. one ol Which provided with a .lixed laterally proj ectinp` pivot stud and the other olf which is provi ded with, as shown., 'tivo longitudinally spaced open notch-like `seats 24e either one ol which is adapted to receive said stud and pivotally connect said levers. lThe levers on one side oit the pivot stud 23 are shaped to :torni a pair ot handles 25 and on the other side thereotare shaped to forni relatively longs)l and short jaars 2o and 2T, respectively.
The short jaw `27, .near its outer end, has in its inner edge portion a deep open notchlihe seat E28 :for releasalaly holding` a grapple 25.-). This grapple 29 comprises a pair ol? laterally spaced. arms 30 rigidly connected at their inner ends by an `outivardly curved crosstie har 3l. The outer endA portions olt the arms il() are extended. laterally 'toward each other to forni a. pair o'l. sining-engaging hooks 8&2. The grapple 29 is dctachahly applied to the short jaw 27 hy having its crosstie har 3l removably mounted i n the `seat 28, see Figi'. l., and with its arms 8O turned away from the long aw QG. It may be .here stated. that the improved springl compressor will he provided with a plural ity ot in lerehangeahly usealile `grapples olf dillerent sizes 'to engage and hold 'alve springs ol'dilli'ercnt dian'ieterf-S and lengths.
lhe lateral4 spacing ol. the arms 8O is such as to 'freely receive therelnitiveen the valve spring` 2() and the shape of the crosstie liar 31. such as to extend radially outwarifl from said spring to alliord. sufficient clearance to `permit the oi'iter end portion of the long jaw 27 to loosely extend between said har and spring. The spring-engaging hooks 352 are adapted to be engaged hy the upper end. the vz `lve spring Q0 at 'diametri lally oppo site points, as liest shown in lii 2, and their (imposing edges are curved to substantially the internal diameter of the spring 20 to ail :tord clearance thcrehetivccn 'for the boss 13.
l The .outer end portion off the long jaw 2G is inpandedto a Width sulfistantially the saine as the grapple 29 and has in its outer end por tion a deep relatively Wide open notch 33 adapted to receive the valve stein 16. A shal low seat 34 for the washer 21 is formed in the inner face of the long jaw 26 with the notch 33 extended substantially therethrough.
To apply the tool to the spring 20 so that the same may be compressed and held with its upper end portion encircling the boss 13 while the valve stem 16 is being inserted through said spring and washer 21, and the pin 22 inserted through the hole provided therefor in theV valve stem 16, said washer is placed in the seat 34 with. the lower end ot' the spring 2() resting thereon and the upper end portion of said spring is placed' within the grapple 29 under the spring-engaging hooks .32. The handles are then operated 4to close the jaws 26 and 27 and compress Vthe spring 2O vbetween the washer 21 and the springengaging hooks 32 of the grapple 29. lVhile the spring 2O is thus held compressed its upper end portion is inserted over the depending boss 13and then the valve stem 16 dropped through said boss, spring and the Yhole in the .washer 21, and the pin 22 inserted into the hole in the valve stem 16 provided therefor.
To detach the spring compressor Yfrom the spring 20, the handles 25 are first operated to open the jaws 26 and 27 to release the compressed spring 2O and disengage the long jaw 26 from the washer 21. A movement of the tool away'trom the block 7 until stopped by the engagement of the grapple arms 30 with the skirt 12, will disengage the hooks 32 from the engagedupper convolution of the spring 20 and position the same between the spring 20 and skirt 12 where the arms 30 may be removed by a downward movement of the tool. During this movement of the tool the long jaw 26 will be disengaged by the valv'e stem 16 which extends through the open notch 33 in said Obviously, the relatively long arms 3() make it extremely easy to handle a valve spring where there is a skirt closely positioned to the spring, as shown in the drawings, and particularly where the skirt is long.
In some instances, it might be easier to remove the tool from a released valve spring by first separating the levers of the tool at the pivot connection 23-24 and then removin g the short j aw 27 from the engaged grapple 29.Y The separation of the jaw 27 from the grapple 29 may be accomplished by a compound lifting and turning movement of said jaw so as to position t-he same between the skirt V12 vand crosstiebar 31 and then withv vdrawn from therebetween.
The above described tool, while especially adapted as a spring compressor for use in replacing` a valve spring as just described, is also well adapted for compressing a valve spring to permit the valve to be lifted from its seat. In this use of the spring compressor its long aw 26 is inserted under the washer 21 and the grapple 29 positioned around the spring 2() with its hooks 32 inserted between the two convolutions ot the spring 2() just below the skirt 12.
lVith the tool thus positioned, the handles 25 may be drawn together to compress the spring si'xfliciently to permit the withdrawal of the pin 22 from the valve stem 16 so that the valve 15 may be lifted from its seat. Obviously, the tool may be radially adjusted ,tor springs of Iditerent lengths by inserting the pivot stud 23 into the different seats 24. lVhile only two of such seats are shown, it isI` of course, understood that others may be provided, if necessary.
