OLIVE E.=FRANK, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, AND HERBERT P. 'WILDER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WATER-HEATING SYSTEM.
Application filed July 23,
This invention relates to water heating systems for use in connection with domestic storage tanks and wherein the water may be heated by the furnace or by a gas burner or by both.
The object of the invention is to provide a combination heater element which is adapted, without valve complications, for use either interchangeably or simultaneously with the furnace or with a gas burner andby means of which the piping is materially simplitied and reduced in cost. With the above object in view the invention consists generally in the combination of a shell divided into compartments each having a heating coil, and
heads connected at the adjacent inlets and the adjacent outlet ends of both coils and piped to the storage tank.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings where- Figure 1 is an elevation of the complete system.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the water heater.
Figure 3 is a plan view of heater.
Figure 4 is a detailed sectional View on the line 1- 1: of Figure 2.
In Figure 1 the furnace is shown at F, the storage tank at B and the water heater at H. The heater consists of a shell 1 having a separable front wall 2, preferably formed in sections and secured to the shell by bolted flange connections 3. The shell has a central vertical partition 4c by which it is divided into two compartments 5 and 6. The compartment 5 encloses a coil 7 and the compartment 6 encloses a coil 8. The coil 7 is used when the water is heated by the furnace and the coil 8 is used when the water is heated by the gas burner 9 which is arranged in the lower part of the compartment 6. The furnace includes a water or steam back (not shown) which is connected to the compartment 5 by ipes 10 and 11 whereby the heating medium, hot water or steam as the'case may be, flows through the pipe 10 and compartment 5 and returns to the furnace by the pipe 11, the water in the coil 7 being heated by the medium flowing through the compartment 5.
The storage tank B is connected to the coils 7 and 8 by pipes 12 and 13. Communication between these pipes and the coils is provided for by heads 14 and 15 respectively which the Water 1926. Serial No. 124,398.
are suitably secured to the sections of the front wall, the terminals of the coils being continued through the front wall as shown in Figure 4 in the case of the head 15, and having water tight connection with the front wall. The coils 7 and 8 are thus both always filled with Water from the storage tank B. i
In the winter time when the furnace F is in daily use the water in the storage tank B is heated by the furnace, the coil 7 being utilized. In the summer time when the furnace is not in use the water. in the storage tank B is heated by the gas burner 9, the coil 8 being utilized. During the use of the furnace there will be times when the quantity of hot water required will be in excess of that which has been or may be provided by the coil 7 and at such times the gas burner may be lighted so as to bring the coil 8into operation, the two.
coils then being used simultaneously until the amount of water desired has been heated at which time the use of the gas burner may be discontinued. The products of combustion of the gas burner may be carried off by a pipe 16 communicating with thetop of the compartment 6 and access to the gas burner for any purpose desired may be had by a normally closed door 17 provided at the rear of the compartment 6. If desired the water heater may be employed in connection with any suitable temperature control applicable to the gas burner sides Such controls being Well known the illustration of the same is unnecessary.
Having fully described our invention, we claim:
1. In a water heating system the combination with a furnace and a storage tank, of a shell divided into laterally adjacent compartments, a water heating coil in each compartment, a separably secured cover plate for each compartment and to which the terminals of the coil in said compartment are connected, fluid conducting pipes connecting the furnace and one compartment, a burner for heating the water in the coil in the other compartment, chambers with which the adjacent terminals of the coils communicate and water conducting pipes extending between said chambers and the storage tank.
- 2. In a water heating system a water heater comprising a shell having a central partition by which it is divided into compartments and having a separably secured front wall, a heating coil in each compartment,
casings carried by said front Wall and propartment and the furnace and a burner for viding chambers with Which the adjacent heating the Water in the coil in the other terminals of said coils communicate, in com compartment. 10 bination with a storage tank, a furnace, In testimony whereof We aflix our signa- Water conducting pipes extending between tin-es. 7
