AUGUSTUS STONER, OF MOUNT JOY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SELF-ADJUSTING- SACK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,176, dated April 28, 18,57.-
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS SToNER, of the borough of Mount Joy, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Device or Machine for Holding Bags when Filling in Grain, &c., called the Self-Adjusting Bag- Holder, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective View of the whole apparatus combined. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 detached parts of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in supplying the place of a hand, so that a farmer or others can fill up bags without an assistant.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On a base A, Fig. 1, one foot from the floor (more or less) rounded in front, supported by three feet, I erect a perpendicular piece B, firmly fixed by a'mortise in A, a slot or bevel opening nearly its entire length, to which is fitted the piece C, (Fig. 2,) to which a hopper D, is attached at top. Said hopper has two hooks on each side, being only attached to the piece C, one third its length, so as to admit a bag being slid around its lower end, and by the seamhung into the hooks I. The piece 0, is kept in place by the headed slugs (framed into it,
and passing through the slot in the upright 13,) marked E, E, (Figs. 1, Q'and 8) in which it moves up and down, supported by the spring G, coiled around a rod passing through the spring bearer F, on which the spring from the lower side of the piece C, rests. This base or adjusting piece F also has a projection K, Fig. 4, moving in the slot of the upright B, with a projecting screw, Fig. 5. i
H is the adjusting bur; h, a washer or ring which keeps the base F, in place, wherever set.
The object of the spring G is to keep the bag stretched and adjust itself as it shortens by being filled up. While the base of the bag rests on the floor between the front feet and curved base A, the mouth of the bag is around the hopper D held by the hooks. Said hopper has a curved edge in front adapted to the measure.
The spring base F, with the bur and screw is in order to raise or lower the hopper with the sliding piece C, so as to adapt the same to longer or shorter bags as the case may be.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The spring G, and the adjusting base F by means of the screw and bur H, and piece C, and the hopper D, when combined .substantially as set forth.
AUGUSTUS STONER.
