Description
U N [TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CAWARD AND DAVID C. CAI/YARD, OF PRATTSBURG7 NEW YORK.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,161, dated November 22, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE CAWARD and DAVID C. CAWARD, of Prattsburg, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Road-Scrapers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which thegure is a perspective view of the whole scraper, and both the right and left hand sides are alike and have similar parts.
A, is the frame, made of wood in shape as shown in the figure. The shape and dimension may be changed to suit.
B, is the blade of the scraper, and it also serves as the bottom. It is made both sides and both ends alike and pivoted at each side edge in the center, or is so made that the pivot on the right hand side may be changed to the left hand side or vice versa. By this improvement we are enabled to turn the blade the way that it is the sharpest and keep our scraper always sharp, and rotate the bottom or blade also, and as the blade wears away it would leave the catches were it not for the adjustable boxes C which allows us to adjust the blade back to the catches as it wears ofl".
D, is a circular shaped arm, pivoted to the side of the scraper at I. It has a small wheel at each end. Its use is to support the wheels E. There is one arm on each side of the scraper.
E E, are wheels that support the scraper and prevent it being worn when drawing along the road, or from place to place; the forward end of the scraper `is lowered when the handles are raised and the wheels keep to the ground, so that by means of the parts I, the handles may be raised to any height so as to take any amount of earth required.
F, is a long clasp that serves to keep the arm D in its position.
G, is a spring catch. It projects through the back piece of the scraper. It is actuated by the blade only, and prevents the blade rotating the wrong way.
H, is a pivoted spring catch that serves'to prevent the blade rotating while the scraper' is being filled; the scraper being lilled and in place to be emptied, raise gently upon the handles and push the spring catch H, at the right end and you unload the scraper while the team keeps moving, and when unloaded the scraper is ready to be filled as before.
We do not claim the revolving blade as such only for that is not new but Vhat we do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The reversible, revolving and adjustable blade B with the adjusting boxes C, when made and operated as and for the purpose specified.
2. Also the circular arms D with the wheels E when made and used as specilied and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE CAWARD. DAVID C. CAWARD.
lVitnesses JOHN J. MEAD, N. H. CAWARD.
