Description

June 11, 1929. P. HORACEK 1,717,212
HAIR CURLER Filed April 9, 1928 A'ri-ORNEY Patented June 11, 1929.
PAUL HORACEK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAIR CURLER.
Application filed April 9,
The present invention relates to an improved hair curler especially adapted for use by those who desire to curl hair, and the purpose of the invention is to provide a main shank, hollow, preferably made of aluminum, with a pair of pivotally mounted jaws carried by the shank and disposed to overlie each other with the shank disposed between the sides of the jaws, whereby it is possible to wrap the hair on the shank and then operate one aw to bear against the hair and then move the ther jaw to overlie the first jaw holding he hair in position on the shank.
Another purpose is to provide the jaws with interengaging means so as to hold them connected with means for connecting the smaller jaw with one end of the shank, which will enable the hair to be hold tight on the shank.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative, and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modification of details and proportions may be made in the construction of the appliance according to circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1is a view in perspective showing the hair curler with the two jaws open.
Figure 2is a perspective view showing the hair wrapped on the curler, with. the smaller jaw closed over the hair on the shank and the larger jaw open.
Figure 3--is a perspective view of the curler showing both jaws closed over the hair on the shank.
Figure 4-is a detailed cross-sectional view of the shank at a point where the jaw 4 is pivoted, showing where the terminals of both jaws are upsetor bent at 11 to prevent detachment.
Referring to the drawings, 1 identifies the shank which may be any length and any diameter, solid or tubular, preferably tubular, in order to provide means for fastening the jaws to the shank, as will be explained later.
One end of the shank has two sets of diametrically opposite perforations 2 and 3, and 4 is a jaw which lies close to the shank. This jaw 4 is constructed from a single length of wire, made in the form of a loop, the loop end being bent to form a notch 5' with ad 1928. Serial No. 268,581.
joining humps 6 and 7. The hump 6 is of less height than the hump 7, the purpose of which will be subsequently known.
As previously stated the jaw 4 lies engagingly close with the shank, that is the sides of the jaw. The shank has a closed end 8 which is flanged, as will be noted substantially diametrical opposite portions of this flange are notched.
In other words the notches are so formed as to permit the sides of the jaw 4 to spring in engagement with the notches to hold the jaw in place. However before the jaw 4 is closed a portion of the hair is wrapped on the shank, then the jaw 4 is closed clamping the hair to the shank and over the sides of the jaw 4.
A jaw 5 larger than the aw 4, is provided and is made of a single length of spring wire and in the form of a loop. The loop end of the jaw 5 is formed with an extension 9, the crutch 10 of this extension acting to spring over the hump 6 to enable the loop end of the jaw to spring into engagement with the notch at the loop end of the jaw 4. In this manner and by the construction described the two jaws may be interlocked, and the single jaw 4 locked to the closed end of the shank. When the jaw 4 is closed and then the hair wrapped around the shan and over the sides of said jaw the jaw 5 is closed over the hair to clamp it and cause it to curl.
7 To pivotally mount the aws on the shank, the terminals of the sides of the jaws are e11- gaged through the two sets of apertures 2 and 3, and by inserting a tool through the hollow shank the terminals may be bent laterally as shown at 11, thereby preventing the extremities of the jaws from disengaging the aperture.
The loop end of the second jaw having an extension constituting a finger piece to be used in disengaging from each other the loop ends of both jaws.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
1. A hair curler comprising a shank, a pair of jaws pivotally mounted on the shank with the sides of the two jaws positioned at right angles, whereby one jaw may overlie the other jaw, one of the jaws overlying the shank, and means for retaining the jaws in overlying positions on the shank.
2. A hair curler comprising a shank, a pair of jaws pivotally mounted on the shank and having looped ends adapted for overlying the end of the shank, and means for interconnecting the looped ends of the jaws, and means for detachably connecting the looped end of one jaw to the end of the shank.
3. In a hair curler, the combination witha shank, of a pair of jaws pivotally mounted on the shank, said jaws having loop ends,.means detachably connecting the loop ends of the jaws, and notches formed on the one end of the shank, which is thereby engaged by the sides ofone ofthe jaws.
4-. In a hair curler, the combination with a shank, of a jaw pivotally mounted on the shank with its sides closely parallel to and engaging the sides of the shank, to clamp the hair to he curled against the shank, means for detach ably connecting the sides of the jaw to the end of the shank, said jaw having a loop end, a second jaw pivotally mounted on the shank with its sides at right angles with the first jaw, said second jaw having a looped end, and means for detachably connecting the loop ends of both jaws.
5. In a hair curler, the combination with a shank, of a jaw pivotally mounted on the shank with its sides closely parallel to and engaging the sides of the shank, to clamp the hair to be curled against the shank, means for detachably connecting the sides of the jaw to one end of the shank, said jaw having a loop end, a second jaw pivotally mounted on the shank with its sides at right angles to the first jaw, said second jaw having a looped end, and means for detachably connecting the looped ends of both jaws, and means for preventing the pivoted ends of the jaws disconnecting from the shank.
In testimony whereof he afiixes his signa-' ture.
PAUL HORACEK.
