HAIR CURLER 0R CRIMPER Filed Dec. 9, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 v; P. INVENTO R A BY zfia- Patented Mar. 12, 1929.
STATE;
HAIR CURLER OR GRIMPER.
Application filed December 1927, Serial No. 238,934,
The present invention relates to an improved ha1r.curler, crimper or waver, and the purpose of the invention is to provide an improved article of this kind, which is tial curl or wave, and due to the length of the curler, the wave or'curl inthe hair will extend a substantial width, the process neces-.
sitating but a few curlers applied to the head of hair, to accomplish a complete wave over the entire head.
Another purpose is to provide a curler or -waver consisting of wire material of a resilient character comprising two opposed,
. hingedly united members, one of the members having a loop forreceiving a project-ion of the other member, to lock the two members or jaws together, when the hair is entwined on one of the members or jaws, the
member or jaw having the loop including sides, which protrude through the member having the projection, so as to hold thehair in a crimped position on the curler, whereby when the curler is detached or removed from the hair and the hair properly combed, the hair will fall in a symmetrical wave.
Still another purpose 1s to provide a two part curler or waver, wherein one member or jaw is provided with eyes, which are so positioned so that by forming eyes'on the opposite member or jaw disposed at right angles to the first eyes, first eyes and thereby afford a hinge connection between the two members orjaw's, the first eyes being operatively and fixedly connected so as to hold them in position, so that the twojaws will move in registerwith each other for the purpose of holding the hair tight on the curler.
Another pur ose is toprovidea curler, wherein one o the jaws includes a fixed central member constructed from a singlelength of wiring with its loop and fastened within the projection of the two sides. of the central member at its other end fastened sure an additional and closer curl or wave to the hair, but also to brace the member or jaw, reinforcing the same in order to insure durability.
may engage with the fixedly between the first eyes, to not only in- It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitive, and. that while still keeping within the scopeof the invention, any desired modification of details and proportions may be made .in the construction of the appliance according to circumstances.
The invention comprises further features. and combination of'parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings; 7 Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved curler showingthe jaws or members'open, v Figure 2 is a View in perspective show-" 111g them closed, with the hair applied to one of the jaws, so that when the other is forced, up through the jaw carrying the hair, the hair will bejcrimped and caused to be wavedfwhen removed from the jaw. 7
Figure 3 is an enlarged detailed view of: the pivotal connections between the Figure 4: is a view of a modified form of curler, wherein the jaw which first receivesthe hair consists of two sides insteadot beingreinforced with acentral member, the jaws being opened.
F'gurc 5 is a perspective view ofthe form in Figure 4 showing the jaws closed with the hair applied. Figure 6 is an enlarged plan view of the hinged connections between two jaws shown. inFigure5. I A
Referring to the drawings, 1 andQ. ,identify two jaws, the jaw 2 being constructed of two pieces of wire material 3 and 4, The wire material 3 is relatively yicldable and forms the two sides or the jaw 2 which has a rectangular end 5, which is bent to form a loop 6 extending at an angle at the end.- This loop 6 constitutes a projection and is of circular formation, which extends between the sides of a U-shaped loop '7 of the jaw 1. The sides of the loop 7 ride over the grooved parts 8 of thezprojection or. loop 6, and lit partially into the crotches' which adjoin the loop6 and the end of the jaw 2. I I
The jaw 2 is relatively straight, while the sides of the jaw 1, while being parallel in plan are slightly curved in side view, and the loop 7 of the jaw 1 is off-set relatively to the sides 9 of the jaw 1. The fact is the curler While it is herein described that the hair may be wrapped upon the jaw 2,
it is obvious that it may be wrapped upon the jaw. 1. The end portions of thesides of the jaw 1 converge toward each other and certain of the extremities of the jaw 1 terminate in eyes 11, which are interconnected with the eyes 12' otthe sides of the jaw 2, in such a manner as to permit the jaws to move pivotally one toward the other.
In other words the eyes 12 are disposed in j the same. plane with the bends 13- at the ends of the sides of the jaw 2, while the eyes 11 are at right angles tot-he eyes 12, and furthermore the eyesu12' are rigidly fixed, by brazing, spot welding or soldering, to'the adjacent ends of the central brace13,which is construct-ed from the wire material This wire material 4 is bent upon itself as at 14 and is iastenedmin the projection or loop as shown at 15. The sides of the central brace closely adjoin to insure rigidity of the aw 2. To give acurl'or wave to the hair it may be wound upon the jaw 2 in the manner shown in the drawing, and then the jaw 2 is closed so that the jaw 1 will pass between the. sides of the jaw 2 When the hair is removed from the jaw Qand then properly combed a curlor wave is given the hair.
Referring to Figures & and 5 it will be.
noted that the aws are identical in construction, withthe eXceptionthat the jaw 2 eliminates the central brace or reinforcement, and the eyes 12 of the j am 2 are fastened. to
gether in any suitable manner preferably spot welding or soldering or the like. Furthermore the jaws 1 and 2 in Figures 3 and 4 are narrower than the jaws in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive.
The inventionhaving'been set forth, what isclaimed is a V 11A-hair curler or waver comprising a pair of opposing jaws, on one of which the hair may be wrapped, the other jaw having sidesto protrude between the sides of the aw carrying the hair, the jaw carrying the hair having sides, the terminals of which at one end of said jaw having eyes disposed in a plane wit-h the sides of such jaw, the jaw of whichits sides protrude etweenthe sides-of .the other aw, having its sides provided W th eyes at right angles. to and interconnected with the first eyes, whereby the two aws are pivotally united, one of the jaws at its free end havinga contracted loop with inclined parts'merging into the protruding sides, the
pair of opposing jaws, on one oi which the hair may be wrapped, the other having sides to protrude between the sides of the aw carrying the hair, the aw carry ng the hair having sides, the terminals of which at one end of said jaw having eyes disposed in a plane with'the sides of such jaw, the jaw-[oi which its sides protrude between the sides of the other aw having its sides provided with eyes at right angles to and interconnecting with the first eyes, whereby the two jaws are pivotally united, one of the jaws at its free end having a contracted loop with inclined parts merging the protruding sides, the tree end of the aw on which the hair is wrap aed terminatin into a laterall r meet 1 l e 3 P ing loop having a restricted neck, said last named loop adapted to engage between the sides oi the first loop to a position approxisides of one jaw bearing against and causing the hair to crimp, and a central longitudinal fixed between the'sides 01"- the restricted neck or the second loop, thereby reinforcing the on which the hair is wrapped.
