STEAMING i APPARATUS.
Application filed June 21,
This invention relates to a steaming apparatus and has for its primary object the provision of a construction by means of which hats may be more effectively steamed while permanently out of contact with moisture.
An obj ect of the invention is the novel manner of shaping and constructing the container so as to effectively engage and support within the container a separator that functions to allow dry steam to readily pass for action on the hat that will positively prevent the passage of moisture into Contact with the hat.
Another obj ect of the invention is the novel manner of constructing the separator and associating the same with the container so that contacting engagement between the separator and the container will be such that steam will be positively held against escaping in the wrong direction.
Anotherl object of the invention is the design of a separator from porous material such as canvas of a sha-pe to be readily suspended within the container and when in place will divide the interior of the container into a lower steam receiving chamber and an upper steaming chamber, the latter receiving directly the hat to be steamed.
A feature of the invention is the provision of a foraminous metallic plate as a portion of the bottom structure of the separator so that the separator may be edectively secured within the container and further providing the separator with a contractable open end capable of overlapping engagement with the edge of the container so as to not only effectively secure the separator to the container but provides a soft pliable seat for the rim of the hat to be steamed.
Besides the above my invention is distin- V guished in the novel manner of constructing and designing the separator so that the same may be readily connected to containers of various sizes and shapes without in any manner interfering with the eflicient operation thereof.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the Vaccompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Figure l,
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the separator removed from the container.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional View through the foraminous plate,
Figure 8 is a sectional view on the line 8 8 of Figure 6.
Again referring to the drawings, illustrating one of the many constructions of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a container shown in this particular instance as shaped to provide an open neck portion 2 and intermediate bulged portion 3, and a lower contracted portion 4, the latter in turn being shaped to provide a catch basin 5. The open top 6 of the container is surrounded by a bead 7 that extends in the required direction to have a snug interitting engagement with the novel type of separator hereinafter described. It will also be noted that the container is provided wit-h an inner annular wall 8 terminating in a shoulder 9 at its juncture with the lower contracted portion 4. To complete the construction of the container I provide a drain pipe 10 in communication vwith the catch basin 5 so as to properly remove moising from the action of the steam issuing from the steam nozzle 11 that is in communication with the feed pipe 12. A lid 13 hinged to the body of the container as illustrated at 14 is of the required area to properly cover thev open end of the container and to rest upon the bead 7 and is further provided with an auxiliary steaming extension 15, and has the basic structural features of the container just described and more particularly the lid construction is fully set forth and claimed in a cro-pending application filed October 21, 1925, Serial Number 64,052. Further detailed consideration of the container will be eliminated.
My improved separator designed for the form the steaming operation.
V`water accumulations.
purpose of separating the moisture from the steam in the passing of the latter to the hat being steamed, consists primarily of a bag 16 constructed from porous material such as canvas to enable the dry steam to readily pass in its travel towards the hat, but will positively prevent the passage of moisture thereby preventing moisture from coming into contact with the hat. The bottom 17 of the bag has attached thereto a rigid foraminous plate 18 preferably constructed from metal to reduce the manufacturing cost-thereof and this plate is of the required area. to snugly co-act with the material ofthe bag to provide a close sliding contact with the wall 8, to prevent the passage of steam therearound.
As far as I have proceeded, it will be appreciated that the formation of the bottom portion of the bag is such that the container is subdivided into a lower steam receiving chamber 19 and a steaming chamber 2O so that steam in passing from the chamber 19 to chamber 20 must pass through the porous material of the bag and through openings in ,the plate, thereby completely and efciently separating the moisture from the steam before it enters the steaming chamber to per- 'Ihere are various manners in which the bottom portion of the separator can be anchored in place but for the purpose of illustration, I have shown a stud 21 projecting upwardly from the noz- Zle 11 and arranged in an opening 2Q. in the bottom structure of the bag so that upon turning of the nut 23 the bottom structure is efectively secured in place. The flexibility of the bag 16 enables the same to readily accommodateV itself to containers of various shapes and for the purpose of effectively suspending the bag within the container, I have provided the former with fastening means illustrated in the particular case as a hem 24 receiving a draw string 25 for contracting the open end portion 26 of the bag around the bead 7 as clearly shown vin Figure 1.. This engaging connection between the bag and bead 7 pro-vides a flexible covering for the bead and assures the'complete absorption of any condensed moisture, thereby fully protecting the hat against being damaged by As heretofore stated the bottom structure of the bag engaging the wall 8 to prevent the escaping of steam through the space between the outer surface of the bag and the inner wall of the container, but for the purpose of positively assuring such a result, and to assure the extending of the bag to its full capacity, I have provided a split band or retainer 27 so arranged that in the expanding action thereof the bag will be drawn into snug engagement with the interior wall of the container.
Arranged between a cover strip 28 and the Vbody of the bag is an absorption pad 29 snugly arranged contiguous to the open end of the container so as to be placed in a most favorable position relative to the hat being steamed so as to cooperate in the absorption of moisture that tends to accumulate at the top portion of the container. The stitchings 30 effectively secure the pad in place and materially reinforce the separator at the open end thereof.
From theforegoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
it will be appreciated that I have in a very novel mannerl so designed a container and a separator that the two will cooperate in an eiicient manner to positively separate moisture from steam, as produced by Vcondensation previous to the entrance of the steam into the bag and vas produced by condensation after entrance into the bag, facilitated by the arrangement of the upper portion of the bag around the edge of the container, thereby preventing moisture from coming into direct contact with the hat. It will also be appreciated that the novel manner of designing and construction the various parts of the invention enables the apparatus to be manufactured at a relatively low cost and besides enables the separator to be easily positioned and adjusted in place.v
It is of course, to be understood that the separator may be constructed from various materials and maybe designed in various other manners than illustrated and may be associated with the container in various other ways and besides the container may be mechanically constructed to function with the separator in various other arrangements than illustrated, and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in protection in any manner whatsoever except as set forth in the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a steam container a closed bottom bag arranged within the container for subdividing the same and contacting with the interior wall of the container at spaced points, for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a steam container having an open top surrounded by a bead, a separator of bag-shaped formation Varranged within the container for subdividing the same and having a ydetachable overlapping engagement with said bead for controlling the position of the separator within the container and means for establishing contact between spaced portions of the separator and the interior wall of the container.
8. In combination with a steam container having an open top and a threaded stud at the bottom thereof, a bag suspended within the container for subdividing the latter and including a foraminous bottom plate detachably secured to said stud.
4. A separator for steam chambers comprising a porous bag and a foraminous metallio plate attached to the bottom of the bag the hem, a strip of absorbing material surand a split band attached to an intermediate rounding a portion of the bag, a split band 10 portion of the bag for extending the same into secured to an intermediate portion, of the Contact with an article in Whlch the bag is bag and a foraminous metal plate secured to 5 arranged. the bottom of the bag.
5. A steam and moisture separator com- In testimony whereof I aiix my signature. prising a porous bag having an open end provided With a hem, a draw string arranged in SPIROS C. MARKATOS.
