UNITED STATES 1,717,037 PATENT OFFICE.-
EDWARD KALLIO, F CRYSTAL FALLS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONEJIALF TO ALEX.
DALPRA, OF CRYSTAL FALLS, MICHIGAN.
CRIBBAGE BOARD.
Application filed October 25, 1928. Serial No. 315,010.
This invention relates to a cribbage board.
It is aimed to provide means whereby a deiinite signal, preferably an audible signal, will be given upon the first peg reaching home to immediately and positively indicate the winner of the game.
Another object is to provide a novel con struction which is exceedingly compact and may be manufactured at minimum cost and which employs a bell under control of a spring motor, which in turn is under control of novel means operable by direct contact of a peg therewith upon reaching home.
The more specific objects and advantages will be pointed out or become apparent as this specification proceeds.
In accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the cribbage board,
Figure 2 is a partial inverted plan view of the Cribbage board,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the cribbage board with the top plate removed to disclose details,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 3, and
Figure 6 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Fi 'ure 4.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the board is preferably made generally of heart shape as shown, although this is optional, and may consist of a wooden base block 10, which is relatively thick, and a wooden or other plate 11 disposed thereover and screwed or otherwise fastened thereto as at 12.
The plate 11 is provided with multitudinous openings 13 extending completely therethrough and at the top beingoccupied by socket members 14, preferably of metal, having bores forming continuations of the open ings 13. Such socket members and openings 13 are arranged in any desired paths which pegs 15 adapted to be moved one by each player, are designed to follow. The home opening 13 and peg 15 is indicated at H. Obviously the pegs 15 may be of any desired form so that they may be readily inserted into and removed from the sockets 1t and openings 13 during the progress of the game.
Plate 11 covers a relatively large recess or cavity 16 provided in the block 10 and in which cavity, a conventional spring or clock motor 17 is located, the same having an attaching plate 18 fastened as at 11) to the base of the recess 16. Said motor 17 is adapted to actuate a signal preferably a hell or audible one. To this end, a bell 20 is fastened w thin the recess 16 in cooperative relation with a clapper 21 actuated by the motor 17. buch motor 17' includes an escapement control member 22, which when released, permits the motor '17 to operate and actuate the clapper 21 and which when restrained prevents operation of the motor and accordinglv of the clapper. I
Such control element 22 is normally held agalnst movement or restrained by a detent plate 23 having a depending flange 24 at one end thereof which is provided with a notch or cut out portion 25 to receive and hold the element 22. Detent plate 23 is connected to a rod 24 pivotally mounted at its ends in recesses 25 in the upper surface of the block 10. It is to be noted that the plate 23 normally contacts with the clapper 21 so that after operation it will quickly cease actuation and vibration of the clapper.
Detent plate 23 is urged into such contact by a leaf spring 26 fastened at 27 to the under surface of the plate 11. Such plate 11 also prevents the rod 24 from disengaging the notches 25.
It is to be noted that the plate 23 has an extension 28 directly under the home open- 1ng and peg 13 and 14 at H.
As a result of the construction described, the peg first reaching home or being inserted into the opening 13 and socket 14 at the location H, engages the projection 28, elevating the opposite end of the plate 23. so as to disengage the controller 22 at the slot 25 and also disengage the clapper, whereupon the motor 17 operates the clapper and thus sounds the bell 20, giving an audible signal to the effect that the game has been won. Upon pressure being relieved from the peg in the location H, the spring 26 will restore the parts to normal inactive condition.
To facilitate winding of the spring motor 17, its winding spindle as at 29 extends into an opening 30 in the plate 11 whereby it is readily accessible for a key. The key may be normally contained in a ocket or recess 31 provided in the under sur ace of the block 10 and normally covered by a suitable closure plate 32 mounted on a pivot 33 so as to occupy the closed position shown in Figure 2 in full lines and removable to the open position shown by dotted lines in the same figure.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A cribbage board having openings for reception of pegs, a motor having a control element, a signal actuated by the motor and a pivoted detent having a holding means normally engaging said element, said detent having a part in line with one of the openings for operation by a peg inserted in that opening to operate the detent and release the. control element.
2. A eribbage board having openings for reception of pegs, a motor having a control element, a pivoted detent having an opening normally engaging said element, said detent having a part in line with one of the openings for operation by a peg inserted in that opening, and a spring normally maintaining the detent in engagement with the control element, a clapper operated by the motor, and
said detent being normally in engagement with said clapper.
3. A cribbage board comprising a block having a recess in its upper surface, a plate on said block covering said recess, said plate having a plurality of openings adapted to receive pegs, a spring motor within the recess, a clapper operated by said motor, a bell associated with said clapper, a control element for the motor, said block having notches in its upper surface, a rod disposed in said notches and held against displacement by the plate, a detent plate carried by said rod and having a portion disposed under one of the openings for operation by an inserted peg, said detent plate having a depending flange provided with a notch to receive the controller, said detent plate engaging the clapper normally, and said cover having a spring engaging the detent plate and urging downward movement of the detent plate at the flanged end thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EDWARD KALLIO.
