This invention relates to retort ovens and especially to gas retorts oi the type which embodies a plurality of retorts assembled in a joint envelope.
Q According to the invention, the distributing channels running along above the regenerators alternate regularly with each other in their task as air and gas distributors; this results in the first place in a division into two parts of what according to another invention of mine is a single air channel, so that the nozzles assigned to these two channels can be regulated independently from the very tirst. 0f the tour distributing channels belonging to each heat pair 0t regenerators the outer ones communicate directly, by vertical shafts, with the regenerators lying underneath, while the inner channels commnnicate at any time with the respective regenerators by oblique shafts. This oblique arrangement of these shafts, in spite out the alternation in the arrangement otthe gas and air distributing channels, renders possible a connection with the respective recs generators, while owing to the vertical or at I most, the slight slanting arran ement ot the "distributing shatts the draw aclrs ol the horizontal cross channels heretofore used are avoided. Furthermore, the entire arrange n ment malres it possible withal to at least-diminish the laclr of symmetry hitherto t'elt by allowing the distributing channels to be made oil practically equal value as regards the resistance, whereby the basic distribution as of the tuels, gas and air, is promoted.
in addition to the general objects recited above, the inventionhas for further objects such other improvements or advantages in construction and operation as are found to to obtain in the structures and devices herein-- a r described or claimed.
l the accompanying drawings, forming a of this specification and showing, for s oi enemplification, preferred er in which the invention may practised, but without limit ention specifically such or instances section take one amour.

Figure 2 is another vertical section of the same but taken in a tudinally ot the retort chambers.
F 1g. 3 1s a partial sectional view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the partition 29 in the channels 25.
In the drawing belonging. hereto such an oven is reproduced in illustration l by a sectron vertical to the retort axis, in illustration 2 by a section parallel to the same.
Under the retorts arranged in the joint envelope it), for which regular heating lines are created by cross partitions l2, the regenerators 18 for air and it for gas are provided, of which the former are placed on the inside, the latter onthe outside. Above each regenerator the tour distributing channels, i. e. 21 for gas and for air, run along, which communicate with noazleshaped pertorations 23 or 2'2 that terminate in the ditterent heating dues. The channels 21, on the other side, communicate with the gas regenerator it through the shatts 23, the
channels 25 through the shafts 27' with the air regenerators 13'. in this connection the outer shafts run simply vertical, while the inner ones are arranged in slanting positions.
The longitudinal through channels 21 and 25 can be reached from the front sides ot the retort group, so that on the one hand the regulation of the slides above the channels 23 and 27 for the uniform distribution of gas and air is possible and also on the other hand it is feasible to efi'ect a cleaning in case of obstructions, Yln this connection, this arrangement can be used uniformly tor horizontal and slanting retorts, lln connection with the latteig as well as with very long horizontal retorts, it is advisable to separate the distributing channels in the center by means of a partition such as shown at 29 in Fig. 3 and to arrange in the front and rear oven halves resulting thereby on each side oi" partition 29 equal number of con necting channels 23 2'? h storers situated undernea ing slides With a further tudinal channe plane extending longitill dti
are adjusted fromthe outside by openings in the partitions, these openings being susceptible of being closed, By this dissolution into four longitudinal channels with dis tributing slides for each pair of heat storers a practically exact admission to the different burners is now possible. The distribution lengthwise is accomplished by a suitable regulation of the slides of each lon gitudinal channel among themselves, and the distribution as regards the central and outside flues by the varying degrees of throttling of the longitudinal channels with reference to each other,
I claim:
1. A gas retort construction comprising a horizontal series of substantially parallel substantially horizontal retorts,-,a group of vertical lines along each of the two opposite lateral sides of each of said retorts, a group of lines over each of said retorts communicating with the fines on-both lateral sides thereof respectively, a substantially horizontal bus channel below each of the groups of vertical flues communicating with said vertical lines thereabove at the lower parts thereof, a regenerator below each of the bus channels communicating with the bus channel thereabove by a plurality of separate ducts spaced from each other along the bus channel with which said ducts communicate.
2. A gas retort as claimed in claim 1 com- I bined with means in each of said bus channels for varying the relative flow of gas in difierent portions thereof unaccely; a pair of bus channels below each of the groups of vertical lines communicating with the vertical lines thereabove at the lower parts thereof; a regenerator below each pair of the bus channels communicating with one of the bus channels of the pair of bus channels thereabove by a plurality of separate ductsspaced from each other along the bus channel with which said ducts communicate and communicating also with one of the bus channels of the pair of bus channels above an adjacent regenerator by a plurality of separate ducts spaced from each other along the bus channel With-which said ducts communicate.
R l. A retort oven according to claim 3, char acterized by means in said bus channels for regulating the flow from the rcgcnerator communicating therewith, and further characterized by each of said bus channels having a transverse partition lying between. two of said ducts communicating therewith.
5. Retort oven according to claim 3 characterized by means in said bus channels for regulating the flow from the regencrators communicating therewith.
